Principal’s report

Welcome back

I trust all of our families enjoyed a relaxing holiday. We

are in for another huge term of events and learning

opportunities for our students. To provide parents with

a picture of all of the events, (at this stage!) I have

included a term calendar at the back of this newsletter.

Various permission notes and other pieces of

information regarding these many events will be sent

out in due course.

Sun Safety

The staff and I will be reviewing our school’s sun safety

policy early this term. Whilst we have had an on-going

expectation that hats must be worn during the hotter

terms (namely Terms 1 & 4), this needs to be reviewed

in light of the concern with harmful UV rays being

present at all times of the year. Indeed sun protection

in the form of protective hats, clothing and sunscreen

is recommended as soon as the UV reading is above 3.

It is expected that all of our students will be wearing

their school bucket hats at all times during the day

when outside. Our ‘No Hat Play in the Shade’ policy is

being enforced daily. Please ensure that your child’s

school hat is labelled with their name!

Megha, Grace & Ellie understand the importance of sun

protection

Spring Fair is nearing!

A reminder to all of our families that next Friday 18

October is our Spring Fair. A huge thank you to all of

our families who supported our bottle stall drive – we

have stacks of wonderful bottled-up treats! Other ways

we need help are by offering to assist at a stall, making

lots of cakes, slices and treats for our cake stall (these

need to be brought to school the day of the Spring

fair), keep selling those raffle tickets (all tickets and

money must be returned by Friday 18 October. Bring

your family and friends and support this wonderful

event!

Kinder 2014

This term we will be welcoming our 2014 intake of

Kindergarten students and their families. Next week we

will be holding a special Story-time session in the

library where I will be sharing a favourite story of mine

with the new kinders. Some of our Year 5 students will

also get the opportunity to meet their new buddies for

next year and share a story with them.

New landscaping – thank you P&C!

During the holidays the areas in front of the

Kindergarten room and the hall were revamped,

making them much tidier and greatly improving the

aesthetics of these areas. These works would not be

possible without the funding support of our very

generous P&C – thank you!

Thank you P&C for enabling this landscaping work to be

completed

Child Protection lessons

Every year, as part of our PD/H/PE curriculum, all

classes participate in Child Protection lessons. The aim

of child protection in primary schools is to assist

students in developing skills in recognising and

responding to unsafe situations, seeking assistance

effectively and establishing and maintaining

relationships and strengthening attitudes and values

related to equality, respect and responsibility.

This term Mrs Kimber and Mrs Commins will be

delivering the Child Protection lessons as part of their

PD/H/PE programs. Throughout the program the same

three themes are discussed, with topics aimed

specifically to cater for the age level of our students.

These themes are:

Recognising abuse

Power in relationships

Protective strategies

There are certainly some sensitive topics which are

covered, but it is vitally important that we provide our

students with the knowledge and strategies to deal

with unsafe situations. Teachers are provided with clear

guidelines for dealing with these topics and a very

prescriptive lesson is provided for each topic covered.

Whilst it is mandatory that we teach Child Protection to

our students, parents may choose for their child not to

participate in these. If parents do not wish their child to

participate please contact Mrs Thurston in writing.

Alternative activities will be provided for children not

participating. Parents wishing to view the content of

these lessons can visit them at:

http://www.curriculumsupport.education.nsw.gov.au/pr

imary/pdhpe/safe/cpe.htm

Physical education sessions

This year Mrs Kimber and Mrs Commins are instructing

all classes in our PD/H/PE curriculum. Each week every

class participates in a physical education (PE) skills and

fitness session. We request that children wear their

sports uniform on their PE day (as well as on Friday

sport day). PE days for each class are:

Tuesday: Kindergarten, K/1, Year 3 & Year 4

Wednesday: Year 1, Year 2,5/6g & 5/6B

Fresh and Fit

On Wednesday we had 3 visitors from the Griffith Fresh

and Fit team who presented a session to the Stage 3

children on healthy eating and sensible lifestyle

choices. Here are some of the things they found out!

If you aren’t a smoker it can still affect your

health. (Eilee)

There are over 4000 chemicals in cigarettes.

Some can give you heart disease, make you

have a heart attack and give you cancer.

(Matthew Y)

Fresh fruit and vegeyables are important in our

diet. (Erin H)

Energy drinks are not for children. They can

cause heart attacks. (Courtney)

Chips with gravy and a coke blended up looks

and smells disgusting! (Maddison)

Healthy fruit smoothies were a treat!
