IDEA Public Schools prepares students from underserved communities for success in college and citizenship.

For 10 years we’ve proven what is possible.
Every IDEA Public Schools graduate has enrolled in a four-year college or university.

Founder & CEO
IDEA Public Schools was launched in 2000 on the belief that through hard work and the commitment and dedication of great teachers and school lead-ers, all students, regardless of their family background, socio-economic standing, or previ-ous academic accomplishment, could achieve at the same or higher levels of their more af-fluent peers.
IDEA puts students on path to succeed in an increasingly competitive global market-place by providing a rigorous college preparatory education and preparing our low-income, Hispanic and minority students in underserved communities across Texas to apply, matricu-late and succeed in a the four-year college or university of their choice. To date, 100% of IDEA graduates have been ac-cepted to a four-year college or university and our student are demonstrating remarkable stay-ing power: 92% are either still in college or have graduated.
IDEA can be an even bigger part of the solution by build-
ing more schools to serve even more low-income students and families across Texas.
At the start of the 2010-2011 school year IDEA enrolled 6,855 students at 16 schools across the Rio Grande Valley. This year we built four new schools in Weslaco and Edin-burg. IDEA is on track to op-erate a total of 27 schools by 2012-2013, when we complete our 2012 Phase One growth plan. At scale, these schools will IDEA will serve 15,000 students, and send over 1,000 students a year to four yearcol-leges and universities, making IDEA the single greatest pro-ducer of college graduates in the Rio Grande Valley.
IDEA’s ten-year record of suc-cess is proof positive that with a focused, K-12 college prepa-ratory curriculum coupled with dedicated teachers and school leadership, together we can close the achievement gap.

Looking back over the past year, it’s amazing what our students have accomplished.
Ninety-four percent of our students met the state stan-dard in reading; 92% in math, 96% in writing, 93% in sci-ence, and 99% in social stud-ies. Forty-four percent of IDEA students were com-mended on their TAKS as-sessment — a common mea-sure for college readiness.
In 2011, IDEA Quest and IDEA Frontier joined IDEA Donna in graduating our larg-est class yet — 149 seniors.
The Class of 2011 received 446 acceptance letters from schools across 25 states. Our students were awarded more than $4.4 million dollars in scholarships and grants. For the third year in a row, an IDEA student was named a Gates Millennium Scholar. For the fourth year in a row, multiple IDEA students were named Dell Scholars. And for the fifth year in a row, 100% of IDEA graduates enrolled in four-year colleges and uni-versities, fulfilling IDEA’s mission of College For All Children.

IDEA students enroll in college and persist through college at rates that far outpace their peers in low-income, Hispanic communities. One-hundred percent of all IDEA graduates have enrolled in a four-year college or university. Ninety-two percent of all IDEA graduates continue in college to date, or have graduated from a four-year college or university. IDEA is changing our students’ life trajectories: Two out of three of IDEA graduates are the first in their families to attend college.

a strong & sustainable
To address the growing need for quality teachers in 2010- 2011, IDEA partnered with Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD to apply for funding under the Department of Education’s i3 grant titled, “Investing in In- novation in Education.” The IDEA-PSJA partnership was one of 49 award recipients out of over 1,700 applicants, and the only awarded in the State of Texas.
In the summer of 2011 and beyond, the i3 grant funded the training of 120 new teach-
ers — 60 from IDEA and 60 from PSJA — at the Rio Grande Valley New Teacher Institute, which is modeled after the successful Teach For America summer institute.
Over the past year, IDEA has also worked to build a robust pipeline of leaders at every level of the organiza-tion. IDEA provides rigor-ous training for new teachers and moves our best teachers into teacher leader positions. IDEA moves rising leaders into school leadership posi-
tions and school leaders into senior leadership positions throughout the IDEA organi-zation. IDEA will offer even more opportunities in 2011- 2012 for training and advance-ment of faculty at all levels.
Hiring talented staff is the building block to our organi-zation’s strength. But we know that we move students faster and further when our teachers also have a high-quality and rigorous curriculum, coupled with training and ongoing in-structional coaching.
To achieve our ambitious goals for students, IDEA must attract and keep the best people. We want to develop that talent, mak-ing sure that staff have every opportunity to learn, grow and im-prove so that they can best serve our students.

To support our mission of “College For All Children,” in 2010-2011 IDEA Academy San Juan and IDEA Academy Alamo piloted a completely re-designed program model that combines the best in online learning and old-fashioned pencil & paper hard work. With exceptional results at pilot sites, all schools will be converted in 2011, making IDEA the largest “hybrid” or blending learning program in the United States. The goal of Better IDEA is to ensure that every child leaves kindergarten and first grade at or above grade level, and that every child leaves 5th grade one to 1.5 years above grade level, ready for college-prep work.

public schoolsis on tracK to
become the single greatest producer oF
low-income college graduates in the rio
grande valley.
One hundred percent of our graduates have enrolled in four-year colleges and univer-sities. The hard work of our students and teachers is tak-ing student success beyond the doors of IDEA: Ninety-two percent of IDEA gradu-ates are either still in college or have graduated from four year institutions, a rate that’s higher than any other institu-tion serving predominately low-income, minority stu-dents.
IDEA’s success, as witnessed by our student results and a waitlist of over 14,000 stu-dents, together with our commitment to drastically improve low-income and minority student achieve-ment across underserved re-gions in Texas, has spurred IDEA to move forward with
its ambitious growth efforts. By building more schools to serve even more students, IDEA can be help close the achievement gap.
In 2004, IDEA embarked on Phase One of an ambitious growth plan to move from two schools serving approxi-mately 1,000 students to 22 schools serving 15,000 stu-dents at scale. In 2010, IDEA opened four new schools: IDEA Academy Pharr, IDEA College Prep Pharr, IDEA Academy Alamo and IDEA College Prep Alamo.
By the start of the 2011-2012 academic year, IDEA will have opened an additional four new schools in Weslaco and Edinburg, Texas. By the fall of 2012, we will surpass our original 2012 growth goals by opening seven new
schools, bringing our total to 27 in all.
In Phase Two of IDEA’s growth, we will continue to build our system of schools in the Rio Grande Valley as we launch new schools in new regions. In the five-year Phase Two plan IDEA plans to open and operate a total of 54 schools across the Rio Grande Valley, San Anto-nio and Austin. When all 54 schools are at scale, serving students K-12, IDEA will serve 38,000 students from underserved communities from across Texas, making IDEA Public Schools the greatest producer of low in-come, and Hispanic and mi-nority college graduates not only in the Rio Grande Valley but across the State of Texas.

A college education remains America’s No. 1 anti-poverty strat-egy. There are two million Texas children living in poverty and Hispanic youth in Texas are graduating college at a rate of one in nine. IDEA is committed to changing these statistics. Five years from now, IDEA will be the single largest producer of college-bound low-income and Hispanic students in the State of Texas.
stAR AwARdFor the 2010-2011 academic year, IDEA Public Schools was named one of six programs to receive the Texas Higher Education Star Award from the Texas Higher Education Coordinat-ing Board (THECB). The Star Award was established in 2001 to recognize exceptional contributions toward one or more of the goals of the Texas Higher Education Plan, “Closing the Gaps by 2015”.
tbec honor rollThree IDEA schools — IDEA College Prep Donna, IDEA Frontier College Prep and IDEA College Prep San Benito — were added to the Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) Honor Roll for 2011. TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the “commended” level in every subject.

NCEA recognizes schools whose students consistently outperform their peers at schools with demographically similar populations.

Preparing our low-income students for college and creating opportunities that are not available elsewhere requires financial support from individual donors, foundations and corporations to meet our funding needs. In the 2010-2011 academic year, IDEA Public Schools raised over $19.3 million in private philanthropy and federal funds.
