Letter from the Director and Chief Curator

At Public Art Fund, it’s always very exciting to offer an artist their first opportunity to conceive a major public work for New York City. Looking back on the past twelve months’ exhibitions and programs, I’m struck by the number of firsts. Iran do Espírito Santo, Katharina Grosse, and Olaf Breuning each presented ambitious and remarkable new commissions. Iran, Katharina and Olaf are well-established international artists with impressive exhibition histories, yet creating a significant new public work in New York City is no easy task. Each of them drew on years of experience to pull off this “debut” with such distinction.

Another thing I love to see is how differently artists approach the same space. Take Doris C. Freedman Plaza for example. Iran’s work, an elegant and perceptually engaging meditation on the form of a cube, followed Thomas Schütte’s figurative United Enemies (which I’m delighted to report is now in MoMA’s Sculpture Garden). In turn, Olaf’s fantasy of sky blue cartoon clouds at the entrance to Central Park makes us see the space as a picture rather than as a volume.

Of course, many of the artists we work with are at earlier stages in their careers. For example, emerging talents Alicja Kwade and Cristian Andersen were both featured in the group exhibition Lightness of Being at City Hall Park. In fact, that was a multi-generational show, paying tribute to the influence of the late, great Austrian artist Franz West, whose last major outdoor sculpture was shown for the first time.

This spring, Brooklyn Bridge Park and City Hall Park became twin venues for Danh Vo’s brilliant installation of elements from his monumental, multi-part work, We The People. Shown publicly for the first time in New York, the exhibition is something of a homecoming for the piece, which is based on the Statue of Liberty.

The best-attended, most successful event in the history of Public Art Fund, our spring benefit broke all records, raising more than $950,000. Special thanks to Olaf Breuning, David Colman, Liz Glynn, Rob Pruitt, Ugo Rondinone, and Erin Shirreff for this year’s terrific artists’ projects. The summer is now off to a dazzling start with the launch of Jeff Koons’ breathtaking Split-Rocker at Rockefeller Center. It’s on view through September 12th to coincide with his retrospective at the Whitney Museum. I hope you’ll join millions of visitors to see the flowering follow-up to Puppy, which we brought to Rockefeller Center back in 2000.

Thank you for your enthusiasm, engagement, and support this year! Do join us at Metrotech Commons on July 30th for the opening of our spectacular new exhibition, Sam Falls: Light Over Time.

Cheers,

Nicholas Baume

This group exhibition brought together a multigenerational, international group of eleven artists whose works share a playful and irreverent attitude toward the formal ideals of classical sculpture. Everyday objects shifted in scale to become larger than life or lose their functionality altogether; art historical references were transformed with a sense of wit and whimsy; and brightly colored objects and unusual forms brought a sense of levity to the show. At once lighthearted and enigmatic, the exhibition featured several works intended for public interaction as well as a weekly performance.

In his signature minimalist style, Iran do Espírito Santo’s 13-foot-square work Playground subtly played with the idea of perception versus reality. At first glance it appeared to be a massive cube made from large stone blocks, several of which were missing at the corners. However, on closer examination, it became evident that the work was not constructed out of individual elements but was cast in stone-like concrete as a unified form. The deliberately fragmented openings allowed transparency into the cube and formed seats for visitors at the busy southeast entrance to Central Park.

For Just Two of Us, Katharina Grosse’s first outdoor work in the United States, the artist placed eighteen large, irregularly shaped sculptures in two separate clusters among the trees of MetroTech Commons. These masses of jutting, brightly spray-painted forms transformed the space into an undulating sculptural landscape; its craggy peaks calling to mind unearthly forms like a jagged Technicolor quarry or piles of meteor debris. In contrast to their monumental scale and brutal shape, the ridges and valleys of each object created a delicate interplay of depth, movement, and light.

Olaf Breuning’s installation, Clouds, towers nearly 35 feet above Doris C. Freedman Plaza. Held aloft among the trees of Central Park by rudimentary steel supports, the six bright blue clouds are made of polished and painted aluminum and were cut to match a hand drawing by the artist. Calling to mind the set design of a school play or child-like drawings of the sky, the idea for this work is inspired by one of the artist’s staged photographs. Blending reality with fiction and refined forms with a do-it-yourself aesthetic, this new work is a whimsical addition to the Midtown Manhattan skyline. Curated by Andria Hickey

Danh Vo’s We The People is a life-size copper replica of the Statue of Liberty in more than 250 individual parts, fabricated over the course of three years using the original techniques and materials. While components have been shown in exhibitions across the globe, this major dual-site exhibition features more than 50 pieces of the work and marks its largest public presentation to date. A poetic gesture as much as a sculptural feat, Vo’s multipart copy of the Statue of Liberty is a metaphor for the circulation of cultural values. Like a monumentally-scaled puzzle, these forms ask us to reconsider liberty as it exists globally and locally.

This June, Jeff Koons’ Split-Rocker, the spectacular planted form towering more than 37 feet in height and featuring some 50,000 flowering plants, made its New York City debut at Rockefeller Center to coincide with the opening of the artist’s retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art. This is the second time one of the artist’s topiary sculptures has graced the plaza; in the summer of 2000, Puppy became a beloved fixture at the site for just over 13 weeks and in 2009 was named “Artwork of the Decade” by New York magazine.

Public Art Fund Talks Square Pegs, Round Holes: From White Cube to Public SphereFall 2013 at The New School Iran do Espírito Santo, Mark Manders, Allora & Calzadilla Encounters: Artists, Cities and CommunitiesSpring 2014 at The New School Sam Durant, Katharina Grosse, Elmgreen & Dragset

The Fall 2013 Talks at the New School series was titled Square Pegs, Round Holes: From White Cube to Public Sphere. As we all know, approaching public spaces can prove both challenging and incredibly rewarding for artists and audiences alike. Our season invited artists to shed light on how they work through the process of moving from the gallery to the public sphere.

The season began with a talk by Iran do Espírito Santo, occasioned by his new commission, Playground, at Doris C. Freedman Plaza. One of Brazil’s most accomplished contemporary artists, he shared examples of projects that revealed the connections between his discrete objects thatinvestigate different materials and his more immersive installation works, showing how both explore the limits of perception and illusion.

Dutch artist Mark Manders presented the second talk last fall, sharing personal anecdotes and unexpected references for the varied, often humorous, visual vocabulary that recurs throughout his practice. Although primarily a studio-based artist, Manders made it clear that a consideration for public context always drives him: “When I make a work, I tend to imagine it for myself, not for others. But I also want it to be a part of the real world. So every time I finish a work, I imagine it in a supermarket. I test if it can survive there, without a museum or gallery, without the label of ‘artwork.’”

Allora & Calzadilla presented the final talk of the season. Collaborators since 1995, the duo cross myriad boundaries between public and private space throughout their practice. Their talk focused on how their work has used music and sound to investigate current and historical sociopolitical subjects. Calzadilla concluded: “Our journey into the subject of how music functions in the public sphere has ultimately been an exploration of a series of relations, which are sketched out in different ways throughout our work. These are: the relations between proportions and disproportions; harmony and disharmony; commensurable and incommensurable relations.”

The Spring 2014 series, Encounters: Artists, Cities and Communities, focused on artists’ engagement with the cities and sites they encounter when presenting work in public space. These talks vividly illustrated how considerations of place and people are always paramount when working in the public realm.

The season began with Sam Durant, who provided important contexts for works that have created unexpected encounters in both public spaces and traditional galleries. With political conviction and good humor, Durant proposed a pragmatic way of engaging audiences: “It’s the non-initiated audience – people who have no training in contemporary art, orany kind of art – that are my ideal viewers. There are no assumptions – they just look at what’s there. And they get it. I think we often get hung up on this idea that you need to know so much about art to ‘get’ the artwork… I think the less one knows, the more interesting the work is.”

Katharina Grosse presented the second talk on the occasion of Just Two of Us, her monumental New York debut, which was on view at MetroTech Commons in Downtown Brooklyn this past year. The talk traced her work’s trajectory, from her first experiments in painting unconventional surfaces, found objects, gallery spaces, and personal belongings, to her most recent large-scale installations. Discussing the MetroTech work, Grosse expressed its site-responsiveness: “I was hoping to have the trees pierce through the work… People would walk through, and there were light reactions, different weather conditions… So while the work was artificial, all the rest of the world would shine through it… The community would react, and between all these forces there have been incalculable reactions that have been amazing to see.”

Elmgreen & Dragset concluded the season, punctuating it with a lively discussion of their approach to art in the public realm, which has included curatorial projects, actions, and outdoor sculptures in cities across the globe. Their remarkable sensitivity to local contexts and the challenges of civic engagement shared a new dimension of public art with our audiences.

We are looking forward to another exciting season of talks. Please check our website for details on the fall lineup.
