What is Officer & Chair Training?Welcome to Officer and Chair Training. One of the benefits of PTA is that Boardmembers are supported by training each year. On this Saturday, we provide two (2)types of classes:

Leadership Orientation Training (LOT)Our updated Bylaws require that all Board members (which includes elected andappointed Officers and Chairs) must be a graduate of the Texas Leadership OrientationClass or have completed the course by October 15 after their election. Once you havethis training, you do not need to repeat it. Members become aware of PTA philosophy,policies, procedures, and requirements involved with this 501(c)(3) organization.Preregistration is recommended although on-site registration will be available. Simplyfill out the attached registration form and mail with payment. Members should arrive 20minutes early to get their badge and materials. Late arrivals must wait for anothersession. Cost is $6. Time is 2 hours.

Free WorkshopsWhether you need to take the required Leadership training or not, we hope you willattend our free workshops. Throughout the day we provide officer specific training aswell as topics of current interest to PTA members. In addition to Texas PTA specifictraining for Presidents, Treasurers, Parliamentarians, Membership/Volunteer/Fundraising/Newsletter/Website Chairs, we also have presenters for other areas such asboard insurance, Bylaws, Programs, and parenting. New this year, you can attendsessions on “Social & Media Networking”, “40 Developmental Assets”, and a father

involvement group—”WatchD.O.G.S.” We encourage Board members to cross train.

Membership—Basics, Room 232, Catherine Carlin, Texas PTA Area 16 President  Learn the basics of PTA

membership— Recruit, Record, Report, Recognize, and Retain. This workshop is a must for themembership planning team.

Aim for Success, Room 239, Marilyn Morris, Founder-President Aim for Success   Does the thought of talkingto your child about sex make you uncertain about what to say? Learn easy, creative ways to talk tochildren of all ages about this sensitive subject from a presenter who has empowered parents across the

country.

Parenting with Love and Logic, Room 235,  Jim Hudson, Quality Resources Unlimited   Do you need tools

and tips for teaching your children how to take responsibility? Using Love and Logic techniques, parentsand teachers learn to hold kids accountable with empathy instead of anger. This valuable message isfocused on more effective parenting and teaching while maintaining your sense of humor. You will learn

how to avoid power struggles and give children responsibility for their own actions.

leading others to become passionate about the mission and vision of PTA. Learn the tools you will need to

develop relationships, manage volunteers and create a successful, efficient PTA. Bring your Local PTAbylaws for reference.

Websites Using Texas PTA/Parent Teacher Network (PTN), Room 231, Michelle Nusrallah , FWISD 

Council of PTAs Website & Newsletter Gold Award winner   Bring your PTA into the 21st century and take

advantage of what technology has to offer. To help your PTA become more efficient and more

professional, Texas PTA has teamed up with the Parent Teacher Network (PTN) to offer you a simple PTAwebsite hosting and application. Learn how to use PTN to post news, keep a database of members, email

members, do surveys. This Fall TXPTN will launch a brand new look. Get started today!

Treasurers – Basics, Room 240, Renee Walker, Texas PTA Leadership Chair, and Lisa Savage, FWISD Council of  

PTAs Parliamentarian   The treasurer position is critical in realizing the goals of any organization, but PTA

has all the information and resources you need to be confident and successful! From writing checks to

making deposits and beyond, learn the ins-and-outs of being a PTA treasurer.

Texas PTA Region V Vice President   Now required for ALL Board members.

Session III 1:00—1:45

AIM, The How, What, When, and Why of Insurance, Room 231, Cissy Heine, AIM Insurance  What is

your backup plan? Your PTA event is decorated, the kids are laughing, the fundraiser is making money,everyone is happy! But then someone gets hurt and they need help with medical bills. Now what?

Learn what insurance you need to protect your PTA and Board.

Bylaws and Standing Rules – Basics, Room 230, Debra Nyul, FWISD Council of PTAs VP  

Presidents and Parliamentarians are strongly urged to attend. Our governing documents are the building

blocks of a successful PTA. Learn how your bylaws and standing rules can be an asset, rather than an

obstacle. Review the steps to updating these documents.

Secretary – Basics, Room 232, Karen Martin, Texas PTA Secretary   The secretary position has wide-

ranging responsibilities, requiring much more than simply being present at all board meetings.Secretaries should play an active role in communicating proper notice of any meetings and the

distribution of necessary materials, such as agenda and minutes. Learn the tools of the trade to protectyour PTA with accurate and comprehensive meeting records.

rules and regulations to keep your PTA in compliance with state requirements and the correct way toaddress sales tax issues when they arise.

40 Developmental Assets, Room 235,  Jackie Green-August, FWISD Student Engagement School Completion  

The Developmental Assets are 40 common sense, positive experiences and qualities that help influence

choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults. Grounded in extensive

research in youth development, resiliency, and prevention, the Developmental Assets represent the

relationships, opportunities, and personal qualities that young people need in order to avoid at-riskbehavior. Because of its basis in research and its proven effectiveness, this framework has become the

single most widely used approach to positive youth development in the United States.

Parliamentarian – Basics, Room 230, Debra Nyul, FWISD Council  of PTAs  What every President,

Parliamentarian, and Executive Board member needs to know. Learn these basic parliamentaryprocedures to make motions, amendments, and time keeping easy. Get the tools you need to handle PTAbusiness effectively and efficiently. (Strongly recommended for Presidents and Parliamentarians.)

IRS 990s & Schedule A, Room 243, Renee Walker, Texas PTA Leadership Chair, and Lisa Savage, FWISD 

Council of PTAs Parliamentarian  Do your hands shake and heart race when you hear the words "IRS"? No

worries! Come to this workshop to learn how to complete the 990 EZ & Schedule A.

Family Friendly Fundraising, Room 232, Faye D. Watson, President of FWISD Council of PTAs   Children are

not door-to-door sales people! Learn fun and innovative ways your PTA can incorporate family

engagement into your fundraising activities. Pick up tips on basic fundraising do’s and don’ts to makeyour plans as smooth as possible.

Reflections, Room 231, Darlene Shue, Texas PTA Area 17 President     “Diversity Means” is this year’s

inspiration. Go step-by-step through the process of participating in the Reflections program. Receive theresources to have a successful, rewarding Reflections at your school.

Social & Media Networking, Room 239, Karen Bantuveris, CEO VolunterSpot  Use the social web to

amplify your voice and spark local action. Facebook, Twitter, blogs and more! Learn simple successstrategies and cautionary tales for using social media and free websites to reach more parents and

engage them in supporting our schools and children. Bring your smartphones, laptops or tablets for afun, hands-on, action-learning activity!

Please plan to send as many officers and chairs to this course as possible. The cost for the

course is $6 per person and should be covered by the PTA budget. (If your Board members
