CharCoat CC Cable Coating is a water-based Intu-mescent Latex coating developed for the fire protection of single, grouped or bundled electrical cables.

Originally formulated in the 1980’s to prevent spread of flame along the cable surface, CharCoat CC has become the leader in Cable Protection not only withstanding cellulosic fires of 750°C for 90 minutes, but also Hydrocarbon fires (1100°C) on electrical cable(s) for 90 minutes at a very low DFT.

CharCoat CC is a unique acrylic latex emulsion which has excellent resistance to weathering and aging and which remains flexible indefinitely allow-ing for cable movement and removal. It is suitable for exterior or interior applications. CharCoat CC will also prevent a short circuit within an electrical cable from starting a fire and will help identify the location of such a short circuit by forming an intu-mescent char at the spot.

CharCoat CC forms a protective intumescent char when exposed to flame or to a temperature above 175°C. This char should be removed completely and clean cables should be recoated if intumes-cence should occur. There is no need to replace cable that has been subjected to fire as CharCoat CC sacrifices itself to save the cable (as long as the cable is functioning).

CharCoat CC is easily applied by brush or spray and it adheres extremely well to cables and tray, allowing for vertical or overhead application. Care should be taken to see that cables are clean and dry before application, particularly that they are free of oil, grease and dirt. CharCoat CC should be applied in 2 coats to ensure complete coverage.

CharCoat FS Mortar

Up to 6 Hour Fire Ratings

CharCoat FS Mortar is a specially formulated gypsum based mortar, which is mixed with water to be trowelled or poured around service penetra-tions. Plastic pipework must be protected with either CharCoat Collars or Intumescent Pipe Wraps (see data sheets).

In floors, permanent formwork panel (50mm) is cut and friction fitted between services and the edges of the floor slab.

CharCoat FS Mortar is then trowelled over the formwork to a depth of 25mm thick. This is allowed to harden. The CharCoat FS Mortar is then mixed to a pouring grade and tops the seal up to the required depth.

In walls, CharCoat FS Mortar is mixed into a stiff consistency for trowelling into smaller open-ings. In larger openings, CharCoat FS Mortar can be cast into blocks which can be built into walls.

CharCoat FS Mortar will provide a water tight, air tight, smoke free and cold smoke seal.

CharCoat FS Panel

Up to 4 Hour Fire Ratings

CharCoat FS Panel comprises of three CharCoat elements.

CharCoat FS Panel are manufactured by spraying 150kg/m3 high-density rock fibreboard with Char-Coat CC fire rated latex coating. The coated panels are simply cut and friction fitted between the services and the edges of the structure.

Plastic pipework needs to be sealed with CharCoat Intu Sealant or sleeved with Insulated Fire Sleeves prior to installation of the coated panel system.

The CharCoat Intu Sealant is used as an adhesive on the edges of the panel to form a barrier with the surrounding structure. All joints in the barrier are sealed in with CharCoat Intu Sealant to form a monolithic layer.

The CharCoat CC Coating is largely used to make good any damaged coating or for a more aesthetic finish. In plasterboard partitions, the panel must be fitted to both sides of the wall to fire protect the studs. The panels can be fitted by either a pattress fix or by being cut into openings. For large floor openings we would advise using CharCoat FS Mortar (see technical data sheet).

CharCoat Intu Sealant

Up to 4 Hour Fire Ratings

CharCoat Intu Sealant is a high specification, one part water based acrylic sealant, extruded from a cartridge (or 25kg Pail) loaded into a stan-dard sealant gun. For use in construction joints and cable / pipe penetration seals (CharCoat FS Panel Backing). The depth of the joint will depend on the gap to be filled and the fire rating required (see fire rating).

All surfaces must be thoroughly clean and free of bond breaking contaminants prior to application of the sealant. No priming is required for most construction substrates, however, it is recom-mended that a small area be tested on substrates.

The sealant should not be applied if the ambient temperature is below 5ºC as adhesion will be impaired. The sealant is fast curing approximately 15 minute tack free time. When fully cured, the sealant is overpaintable. Under fire conditions the sealant forms a fire resistant ash.

CharCoat Intu Sealant provides a Weighted Sound Reduction Index (Rw) of up to 57dB. Please consult our sales office with details of: -Type of construction -Required acoustic rating -Size of joint-Corehole size-Qty of Cable or Pipe

General benefits:• Smoke seal • Good acoustic insulation • Simple installation • Load bearing seal• Suitable to make good around most types of service penetrations • Unaffected by humidity • Maintenance free • No smoke emission

CharCoat FS Mortar will provide a water tight, air tight, smoke free and cold smoke seal.

These are approximate calculations based on 22kg bags. The coverage does not take into account the percentage of the hole filled with services.

Install CharCoat FS Mortar to provide 1,2,3 or 4 hour fire rating to all service penetrations through all fire rated walls and floors. Installation to be fully in accordance with manufactur-er’s instructions.

The open area free of services: thickness of seal ratios for non-reinforced seals given above, allow an ample safety margin for normal foot traffic e.g. loads of two men plus equipment with a combined weight of up to 200kg. CharCoat FS Mortar sets in 30-45 minutes and is capable of accommo-dating foot traffic in approximately 72 hours.

* As a further safety margin, we would recommend that all floor seals with clear areas greater than in the above table must be reinforced. Please contact our technical department for details.

Coating for the protection of pollution flashover on exterior and interior high voltage insulators

Charcoat IC

Since its release to the market in 1991, CharCoat IC has been in service in the most polluted areas of Southern Africa, and has also found application in Europe, North America, Australasia and the Middle East. No flashovers have been experienced at any of the treated sites.

The material's usage has ranged from small 11kV Substations to complete 765kV Transmission Stations and 533kVDC Converter Stations. The oper-ating environments include marine salt fogs, coastal desert conditions, heavily industrialised sites with, for example, acidic emissions, power station fall-out and heavy cement dust contamination, and agricul-tural areas characterised by regular sugar cane burn-ing and the use of highly conductive fertilisers and weedkillers.

CharCoat IC is a unique room temperature vulcanised (rtv) silicone elastomer formulation specifically devel-oped by CharCoat Passive Fire Protection and Mace Technologies in collaboration with the Electric Power Research Group of the University of the Witwatersrand for the prevention of pollution flashover of high voltage outdoor insulation.

The exceptional hydrophobicity of CharCoat IC inhibits the formation of continuous moist conductive layers on insulator surfaces. This, in turn, limits the flow of leak-age currents thus preventing the creation of dry bands and partial discharges – critical steps in the flashover process.

The superior performance of silicone rubber over other insulating materials in polluted environments is well proven. What makes silicone unique is the fact that, owing to the migration of low molecular weight silanes that exist within the elastomer, the water repellent prop-erties are imparted to contaminants which accumulate on the surface.

The constant water-repellency exhibited by CharCoat IC coated insulators, even in the most severe environ-ments, coupled with silicone’s inherent resistance to degradation by ultra- violet radiation, ozone and most chemicals, combined with the use of specialised fillers to combat power arc damage, enables the material to provide enhanced system reliability over a period of many years.

Specialfeatures

Generalinformation

- Excellent arc resistance- Fast hydrophobicity transfer to contaminating layers- Fast recovery of hydrophobicity after arcing- Resistance to damage by corona discharge- Adhesion to glass, ceramic and resin surfaces- Resistant to oil, ozone, various chemicals and petrols- Ageing resistant- 100% UV resistant- After completion (full cure) temperature resistant down to -50°C

Hydrophobicity Transfer - Uncoated porcelain – pollu-tion wets and forms a conductive layer

On a silicone surface, the pollution becomes hydrophobic

TechnicalData

CharCoat IC is extremely hydrophobic displaying a water droplet contact angle greater than 100 degrees. Moreover, the coating has a quick hydrophobicity recov-ery rate and, by the migration of low molecular weight silanes present in the material, readily transfers its hydrophobic characteristics to any covering contaminat-ing layer. Typical curves illustrating these effects are provided below.

For improved performance, and a controlled cure at room temperature, CharCoat IC is a two- part material, i.e. a small volume of catalyst is poured into the coating before application. Unlike those materials utilising an oxime cross-linking agent, CharCoat IC's curing system has the benefits of not requiring any atmospheric mois-ture for vulcanisation to take place, the cure rate is independent of humidity, no by-products are released on curing and there is practically no shrinkage (<0,1% versus 0,5% to 1% for oxime systems).

The shelf life is also much longer than single-part rubbers.

The coating is designed for spray application to give an optimum layer thickness of 0,3 to 0,5mm and is formu-lated with various solvents of different evaporation rates for ease of application and to yield a smooth, uniform, high quality finish.

The coating has a typical skin-over time of 15 minutes. Unlike the one-part rubbers, its curing time is consistent as it is independent of the ambient humidity. In order to minimise waste and for ease of handling, after addition of the catalyst the coating has a pot life of one hour at 23°C. The equipment can be energised immediately after coating.

Although the coating does have some adhesion to porcelain and glass, the application of CharCoat IC Primer, which is supplied with all coating purchased, is recommended to provide a strong permanent bond to all ceramic, glass and resin materials. If a separate primer is not used, the bonding agent must be included in the coating. This, of course, replaces some of the silicone and thus adversely affects the material perfor-mance and longevity.

It is our philosophy that primer be applied only at the interface between the insulator and the coating where it is needed, and leave the rubber layer itself free of unnecessary materials.
