MAR to improve Water Quality
High nitrate concentrations in the upper aquifer systems caused by agricultural practices Campina de Faro aquifer system is part of a declared Nitrate Vulnerability Zone by the
applications of the Nitrates Directive (since 1997, enlargement in 2004)

(Campina de Faro aquifer)
The aim is to demonstrate that the groundwater qualitycan be improved applying MAR through infiltration basins constructed in the rio Seco river bed as well aslarge wells
The following infrastructures were used during 2014/15:
the basins constructed during GABARDINE 6FP EU project (PT1_1) were rehabilitated for MARSol
a new large MARSol basin (PT1_2) was constructed and tested
large-diameter wells (PT1_3) were tested for infiltration

PT1_1 Algarve, rio Seco
• Rehabilitation of the existing structures (2 basins, 1 spillway, 1 well and 2 piezometers, leveling of rio Secobed, leveling GABARDINE basins (May/June 2014)
• Hydraulic tests and well log sampling collection to measure clogging (June 2014)

The aim is to contribute to the development of SAT system to treat WWTP, and to increase groundwater storage and quality
The following infrastructures will be used:
SAT basins will be used to reduce the treated effluents of a WWTP (PT2_4), which discharges water into Ribeiro Meirinho river (PT2_5) -> WP14 soil-column tests
In Cerro do Bardo (PT2_6), a tributary of Ribeiro Meirinho, the available small dam infiltration structure and a large infiltration well will allow the recharge

• A MAR system for soil-aquifer-treatment (SAT) will be constructed to remove pollutants that still exist after the WWTP
• Soil-column lab facilities are being to study specific pollutants and their behaviour
• Soil-column experiments to analyse the pollutants retention capacity (June 2014/15)
• Different soils and mixtures, prior to SAT

WHAT WE ARE DOING:
• Soil-column experiments to study specific pollutants and their behaviour
• LNEC artificial aquifer will be used to simulated soil-aquifer-treatment (SAT) to remove rice field pollutants prior to the discharge in Melides lagoon
