Psychology Newsletter
April 2013
April 2013 - Issue 8
Centre for Research Excellence
Every year 65,000 Australians make
suicide attempts and
2,500 die. Suicide is
recognised as a public
health crisis yet little
is known about how
best to deliver the
intervention programs
that are so urgently
required.
Involving clinical and research experts
from around Australia, the NHMRC
CRE in Suicide Prevention will test new
delivery options for inventions, investigate
models of suicide causation including
social patterns and gene-environment
interactions, improve help-seeking
behaviour nationwide and inform
government on funding priorities. This
new collaborative approach will enable
the development of a central suicideresearch hub – unifying the sector and
facilitating the smooth and effective
translation of research into impactful
clinical outcomes.

New App for Suicide Prevention developed by Black Dog Institute
Researchers at Black Dog have been working with Alive & Kicking Goals! (Broome), HITnet Innovations,
and Thoughtworks to develop an interactive self-help app for suicide prevention amongst Indigenous
people aged 16 to 30. This group has a completed suicide rate up to five times higher than their
non-Indigenous peers. Some of the barriers to help-seeking in this group include shame, feared
loss of anonymity, low service availability, and negative attitudes to health care providers. Many
have disengaged from formal education and are difficult to reach. With the rapid growth in mobile
technology and apps, this app has the potential to overcome
some of these barriers. The content of the app is based on
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and was developed
in consultation with young Indigenous people in the Kimberley
and Armidale. Text in the app is accompanied by voice overs and
the app makes use of images and videos to convey therapeutic
content in order to minimise text. All images and voice overs
were developed by Indigenous artists. A pilot of the app is
planned for mid-2013.
