Program Requirements The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMH-NP) graduate certificate is available to nurses who are already master’s prepared and certified as advanced nurse practitioners in fields other than psychiatric-mental health. The program expands their scope of practice to assist them to acquire the theory, knowledge, and skills needed to provide psychiatric-mental health services to families. The curriculum includes didactic, seminar, and clinical hours. The program uses a variety of course delivery methods, including: online synchronous or asynchronous, distance, and hybrid. While core courses and most specialty courses are distance delivered, all clinical courses use the hybrid format and include mandatory face-to-face intensives (usually 1-2 campus visits/semester). Additional course work is held throughout the semester at scheduled times, with distance students participating live via unified communication programs such as Skype or Blackboard Collaborate. Anchorage-based students are encouraged to attend biweekly seminars on campus to promote collegial interaction. The PMH-NP graduate certificate program requirements are based on the type of nurse practitioner certification the individual already has; supplemental coursework may be required based on the transcript gap analysis that is done by the academic advisor. The certificate requires completion of 23 credits, listed below. Students who successfully complete the graduate certificate program will be eligible to take the national certification exam for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner-Family offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. This examination is given nationwide throughout the year.
Clinical Locations All PMH-NP clinical experiences must be completed in the state of Alaska. In most instances, clinical rotations are completed in the student’s own community. The program bases decisions for clinical sites on a preceptor’s ability to provide adequate experiences that allow students to meet the course and program outcomes. Thus, it is possible for students who reside in Alaska, outside of Anchorage, to pursue graduate study at UAA. Additionally, all students have the opportunity to take advantage of clinical learning opportunities throughout the state, including both urban and rural settings.

Supplemental Coursework Students who have not completed advanced pharmacology, pathophysiology, and health assessment courses in their original nursing master’s program will need to take these courses to complete the certification program.
