    The Graduate Admission Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India

    level examination conducted by the IITs for admissions to Masters/

    Direct PhD in the IITs, IISc Bangalore and other universities/

    institutes in India or Abroad. An increasing number of Public Sector Units

    (PSUs) have been announcing recruitment at the entry levels of their man-

    agement cadres through GATE exam. At the time of publication of this book,

    a total number of 18 PSUs have already announced the recruitment through

    GATE 2015 with more to come in the next few months

    To be conducted by IIT Kanpur, GATE 2015 has some

    new features such as a complete online application

    process, a validity of the scores for a period of three

    years and the use of online calculator during the online tests.

    All the 22 papers for GATE 2015 will be online.

    An increasing number of PSUs have been recruiting on

    the basis of the GATE scores. Staring with one or two

    a few years back, the numbers are slowly increasing

    with 17 PSUs announcing Recruitment through GATE 2014.

    GATE 2015 has seen 18 PSUs already announcing their

    intention to recruit graduate Engineers on the basis of their

    GATE 2015 scores with more PSUs expected to join in. The

    RECRUITMENT THROUGH GATE:

    largest recruitment in terms of numbers has been announced

    by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) with

    745 posts. Coal India, IRCON, BBNL, BNPM, THDC,

    NBCC, OPGC are some other PSUs that have announced

    recruitment through GATE 2015. Old participants like

    BPCL, HPCL, Indian Oil, Powergrid and NTPC have also

    announced their recruitment through GATE 2015.

    The advantages are many for both, the PSUs as well

    as the students. In the earlier days, all the companies

    would hold their individual entrance tests for recruit-

    ment. This involved an inordinate amount of time, effort and

    cost for each one of the said companies. The applicants were

    many thousands in fact for a low number of posts. The other

    part was that there was no fool proof system of picking the

    right candidate, who had qualified in the entrance test. Many

    a times fingers have been pointed out the most recent being

    the test paper for the ONGC recruitment being leaked.

    For students, this system was a nightmare. It involved pre-

    paring for many exams for a well-placed job with no proper

    time left for preparation. The other part was the expense

    involved as most tests required a small application fee. In

    cases where no application fee had to be paid, there still was

    the cost of appearing for the test at one of the limited exam

    centers specified by the companies.

    With the screening test being GATE, a lot of things have

    fallen into place. First, students needed to prepare for a

    single entrance conducted by the IITs. Reputed to be one of

    the toughest exams and clean in its reputation, GATE turned

    to be an ideal answer to the PSUs in picking the best candi-

    dates for employment. The PSUs dont spend any amount of

    money, time or effort in the entrance test part. Instead, they

    select candidates who qualify in GATE and start from the

    interview part directly. GATE ensures the quality of the can-didates considering that only 16.84% of the students actually

    qualify and pass the exam (as per GATE 2014 figures). The

    other fact is also true that the number of GATE applicants

    have increased due to the PSU recruitment.

    From the students point of view, it entails preparation for

    just a single entrance exam ensuring utilization of precious

    ADVANTAGES OF RECRUITMENT THROUGH GATE:

    time for strenuous single minded preparation for success.

    Students also save money considering that they need to pay

    for the GATE application though some PSUs do charge a

    small application fee. In most cases, there is no application

    fee though. It is also an advantage that they need to prepare

    for the exam in the subject of their specialization unlike

    earlier days when most PSU entrance exams would involve

    logical reasoning, GK and other such topics.

    The general procedure for PSU Recruitment is that all

    applicants are required to apply to each PSU indi-

    vidually as and when they open their application por-

    tals. Another common factor is that all the PSU Applications

    entail the requirement of the applicants GATE Registration

    No. Candidates will also have to furnish their GATE 2015

    Admit Card and Score Card during the time of the interview.

    Many applications require the uploading of the photo-

    graphs which also have to be identical to the ones used for

    the GATE application. Candidates will also have to check the

    eligibility criteria before applying as the requirement of the

    PSUs differ in terms of discipline, pass percentage of qualify-

    ing exam and so on. Not all GATE applicants can apply for

    the PSU recruitment. The other important factor is even if

    the candidates meet the criteria, they must also ensure that

    they appear for the GATE paper as specified by the PSUs to

    be considered.

    HOW TO APPLY? COMMON PROCEDURE:

    Most of the PSUs do not charge any application fee but

    there have been instances where a small application fee has

    been charged. Candidates will also need to check for that

    before applying.

    All candidates, who qualify in GATE and meet the

    eligibility criteria of the respective PSU, stand a good

    chance of being selected. Some PSUs have given addi-

    tional details of the criteria such as candidates have to secure

    the GATE qualifying marks (out of 100) after normalization

    as per GATE rules. GATE scores as all candidates may be

    aware of are declared as per the formula specified by the

    GATE authorities.

    In addition, most of the shortlisted candidates will have to

    face an interview. In some cases, there will be a group discus-

    sion. Candidates must understand that the recruitment is for

    the management cadre and hence the requirements include

    persons, who are team players; who have a general aware-

    ness in addition to subject knowledge. Candidates who are

    successful in the interview, group discussions if any will be

    selected.

    Most of the recruited candidates will be given hands

    on training and work experience. It is but natural

    for any company to expect the effort to be invested

    in its growth. This forms the main reason behind the service

    bond that has to be signed by candidates in many PSUs. The

    service bond clause entails giving two to three years of ser-

    vice to the company after the probation period. The Service

    Bond is usually set for a certain amount and has to be signed

    by the selected candidates. Candidates must check for this

    before applying. They must be sure that they understand the

    modalities before signing.

    Note that the service bond is not mandatory for all PSUs.

    This is a tricky part as there is no official know how

    for the aspirants. But going by the experiences of

    the selected candidates from the previous years, any

    applicant is expected to know the subject. The main idea of

    an interview is not to grill the applicants but to know about

    the candidate, presentation skills, decisiveness and other

    personality factors that a PSU may be looking for.

    Being well groomed is a must for every shortlisted candi-

    date. It is imperative that candidates are punctual and on

    time for the interview. Knowledge of the subject is a man-

    datory factor. In addition, the candidates are expected to

    possess general awareness of the country and current affairs.

    This means candidates also must keep themselves up to date

    by reading the newspapers and otherwise. A certain defer-

    ence is expected to be accorded to the panel, which will be

    interviewing the candidates. Any disagreement of view point

    must be subtly put across.

    Group discussions are grounds for putting the individual

    views in front. It also is a ground for team playing behavior,

    leadership qualities that may be put in front of the inter-

    view panel. It definitely is not a shouting match ground.

    HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE PSU INTERVIEWS?

    Candidates need to be alert in this regard. Another important

    point is that a group discussion should be highly impersonal.

    Personal ego and forceful attitudes should not have a place

    in there.
