2011-2012 SEASON

6 pittsburghsymphony.org

DEAR PNC POPS PATRONS,Welcome to the opening of our 2011-2012 PNC Pops season! After returningto Pittsburgh from a phenomenal three-week tour of many of Europe’s mostprestigious music festivals, we opened the season with our Gala concert, Musiquedu Monde, followed by two weekends of magnificent classical concerts. We alsowelcomed our newest members of the PSO: Concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley,Principal Flute Lorna McGhee and Principal Timpanist Ed Stephan.

Our orchestra comprises some of the most talented musicians in the world. They are also incredibly generous people, deeply committed to Pittsburgh andto their Orchestra. In June, we announced that the musicians of the PittsburghSymphony Orchestra ratified a new three-year concessionary contract, effectiveSeptember 2011. Not only did the musicians agree to a wage reduction andchanges to their retirement plans, they also voted to make a donation of $100,000per year to our Annual Fund during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 seasons.Their actions further inspired the PSO board of trustees to increase their collectivesupport to more than $1 million – a 30 percent increase over last season’s trusteegiving. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to our musicians and my fellow trusteesfor this outstanding level of commitment.

Tonight, Marvin will be sharing some exciting news with you about the newPops Artistic Excellence Fund. The PSO has been awarded a $250,000 challengegrant from an anonymous donor to inspire Pops audiences to support the finalphase of the Commitment to Excellence Campaign. We hope you will help usunlock every dollar of this challenge through your support, so that we can continueto bring you the high quality programming you expect and deserve.

Thank you and enjoy tonight’s performance.

Sincerely,

Richard P. SimmonsChairman, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

2011-2012 SEASON

WELCOME TO THE 2011-2012SEASON! WE HAVE SO MUCHTO CELEBRATE.

The PSO promises yet another entertaining andenriching concert experience this season, from tonight’ssizzling Ballroom with a Twist to a celebration of thesongs of the silver screen to a walk down memory lane with the legendary Gershwins. We also look forward to welcoming the inimitable Patti Lupone, violinist NatalieMacMaster and we are so fortunate to have Marvin Hamlisch celebrating his 17th seasonas our Principal Pops Conductor, on the podium this year for Highmark Holiday Pops.

This season we are especially proud to celebrate the 40th anniversary of HeinzHall. Home to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since September 1971, Heinz Hallwas the catalyst for Jack Heinz’s vision for creating a Cultural District downtown.

In the past few weeks you may have seen our Hear Why the World Cheerstelevision spots or heard us on the radio. This image awareness campaign is designedto educate the people of Southwestern PA about what all of you already know—thetreasure that we have in our Orchestra. We hope that you will help us spread the wordabout this wonderful organization located right here in our own backyard!

In these difficult economic times, the PSO remains dedicated to maintain the highestlevel of artistic quality, enabling you, our beloved and loyal patrons, to enjoy perform-ances of the highest caliber by one of the world’s great orchestras. I am deeply apprecia-tive of the wonderful example set by our musicians’ decision to take a 9.7 percent wagereduction in the first year and a wage freeze in the second year of the new contract, aswell as contributing $100,000 per year to the PSO’s Annual Fund for the first two years.

I thank you for your ongoing support of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Yoursupport is vital and greatly appreciated by everyone at the PSO.

LAKISHA JONES “I just want tosing.” That heartfelt declara-tion pinpoints the core essenceof LaKisha Jones. Best knownto millions of TV viewers as atop four finalist during the 2007season of “American Idol,” the

singer is ready to reclaim center stage—this time

with her first solo album. “So Glad I’m Me." “SoGlad I’m Me” resonates from start to finish, pro-pelled by Jones’ expressive, full-bodied vocals. It’sthe same arresting voice that electrified “AmericanIdol” viewers with the “Dreamgirls” showstopper“And I Am Telling You” and later commanded theBroadway stage in Oprah Winfrey’s Tony Award-winning musical “The Color Purple.” Whether Jonesis delivering a gut-tugging ballad, a beat-infusedparty jam or a spiritual uplift, her voice never losesits soul-stirring fervor. Helping Jones craft hermusical message were hit-making songwriter/pro-ducers Tony Nicholas (Patti LaBelle, Gerald Levert,Luther Vandross), Ro & Sauce (Brandy, Ne-Yo),Greg Curtis (Keyshia Cole, Yolanda Adams).Jones’ motivation and mesmerizing style date backto her childhood in Flint. Raised by her mother andgrandmother, she was exposed to such legendarysingers as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin andPatti LaBelle. Singing in chorale groups and a cap-pella choruses through high school, she entered andwon the top prize at Flint’s local talent contest, “TheSuper Show,” in 1997. A two-year stint studyingvocal performance at the University of Michigan leftthe high school graduate wanting to sing more thanhit the books. But an eventual move to Baltimoreproved a second time can be the charm. Havingheard her sing on the job and at local events, Jones’was encouraged to drive to New York to audition forthe 2007 season of “American Idol.” It was whileperforming on the “American Idol” tour that Jonesreceived a call to audition for “The Color Purple.”She anticipates more acting and singing roles onBroadway, TV and films, recording a gospel albumand establishing a foundation to provide resourcesand support for single moms. But first up is winningmore fans with “So Glad I’m Me.”

My dance life started at the age of 10 after my fam-ily decided it was important for my social skills tolearn ballroom dancing. My grandparents were com-petitive ballroom dancers so it didn’t come as a sur-prise to many that I should follow in their footsteps. Ilearned to love competitive ballroom dancingbecause winning competitions gave me confidence, and I realized how competitive I actually was.Dancing gave me the opportunity to express feelingswithout saying a word and I also experienced it astherapy to deal with many emotional obstaclesthroughout my childhood.

From the age of 15 I was traveling abroad repre-senting my country in major dance competitions inboth Ballroom and Latin. Those early internationalyears gave me a lot of experience and the realizationthat if I wanted to make it big I needed to take risksand make major life altering decisions. I had to get aninternational partner, move to England and thereforestop traditional school. My mentor/coach, RuudVermey PhD and I convinced my parents (not sure ifI didn’t want to finish school because of my career orjust the excitement of not having to go anymore..lol)to permit me to terminate high school at 16 to pursuemy dance career. My parents were torn, because theywanted me to finish my education. I totally agree nowas an adult, but in hindsight I thank them and myschool principal on my knees that they let me go. Itook a huge risk by supporting my decision, becauseI was still under age. When I became world champi-on in 1994 that school principal who supported mydecision was invited to the celebration party and inhis speech he said “I could have lost my job over thedecision to let you leave high school early, but nowI’m so happy I did knowing you reached your dream.Your country is proud of you.”

During the summer of 1989 I started a whole newrollercoaster in my life with my beloved British dancepartner, Julie Fryer. It started as a crazy fast careerboost. We learned, laughed, triumphed, lost, gained, cried, split up, got together again. Doors opened andclosed, but with blood, sweat, and tears I found myintuition was my life saver on many occasions.Sometimes following your gut is more important thanlistening to others. I did and it helped me make lifechanging decisions when times got rough. With intu-

ition I felt my passion and love for dance made mehappy and I became more sincere in my expression indance and life.

After three world Latin Dance championship goldmedals in 1994, 1995 and 1996 I fulfilled more thanone dream and was so appreciative for all of myblessings. I still felt an urge to do more. From my ear-liest age I was always been cross trained in manyforms of dance and was educated in choreography aswell , by my mentor, Ruud Vermey.

I wanted to explore the world of bringing BallroomDance mixed with other forms of dance to the theaterworld. When I first came to NYC in 1991 I fell in lovewith the city. I told my friends that when I retired fromcompetitive dancing in my late thirties I wanted tomove to New York City. Well, as fate would have it Istopped competing at 26 and moved to New York Cityin June of 1997. I took the risk and followed my intu-ition once more. I packed my two suitcases, bought aticket and moved to the Big Apple leaving my homecountry. A new chapter of my life had begun, and I hadno idea what was in store for me.

In that summer I had the pleasure of working withmany amazingly talented dancers many of whom arenow known to you as my colleagues on Dancing WithThe Stars. Not only was I coaching Tony Dovolani,Karina Smirnoff, Maksim Chmerkovskiy and hisbrother Val since my early days in NYC, but webecame close friends. Now working on Dancing WithThe Stars together is amazing, especially since wehave all known each other for so long.
