Clearing Faults Functions

Use the Clear Faults button to clear all faults.

Allison Transmission faults can only be cleared if Allison DOC® For PC is installed.

When attempting to clear an Allison Transmission fault, Allison DOC® For PC will

be launched to perform this action.

Due to new Emissions regulations, clearing Engine faults may not work, since

those functions are being disallowed on emissions related components.

Fault Status Types

The following contains the details and descriptions of J1939 Fault Statuses as presented in

PSI PowerLink.

• Active

This status indicates that the fault is a currently active diagnostic trouble code. The

conditions required to enable this fault are currently present and must be repaired to

disable the fault code.

A fault code with this status can be cleared with a diagnostic tool but will immediately be

reported again after being cleared.

• Inactive

This status indicates that the fault is a previously active diagnostic trouble code. The

conditions that triggered this fault are currently NOT present.

A fault code with this status can be cleared with a diagnostic tool.

NOTE: Inactive fault codes with a high occurrence count may be intermittently occurring

and may need to be diagnosed before clearing.

• Pending

This status indicates that the fault occurred in the current or last completed drive cycle

and is used to report a fault at the initial detection of a malfunction. It is used for emission-

related components and systems. This fault status is intended to assist technicians after a

vehicle repair, or after clearing diagnostic information, by reporting test results after a single

driving cycle.

A fault code with this status can be cleared with a diagnostic tool.

• Permanent

This status means that the fault is a confirmed or “MIL-on” fault code that is stored in the

ECM and cannot be cleared using a diagnostic tool. The On-Board Diagnostic (OBD)

system may only clear the fault code when the OBD monitor that detected the malfunction

determines that the malfunction is no longer present, and is not commanding the MIL on.

Page 39: PSI PowerLink User Guide

WORKING WITH LIVE CONNECTIONS (CONT.)

PSI POWERLINK USER GUIDE

38

This usually requires the OBD monitor to run through certain drive cycles, to verify the

malfunction is no longer present.

• Emissions Active

This status indicates that the fault is a currently active, emissions-related diagnostic

trouble code. Faults with this status usually illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp

(MIL). Specific regulations may allow the MIL to not be illuminated for some emissions-

related diagnostic trouble codes.

A fault code with this status can be cleared with a diagnostic tool but will immediately be

reported again after being cleared.

• Emissions Inactive

This status indicates that the fault is a previously active, emissions-related diagnostic

trouble code. Faults with this status will no longer illuminate the Malfunction Indicator

Lamp (MIL).

A fault code with this status can be cleared with a diagnostic tool.

Launching OEM Applications

Launch a 3rd party (OEM) diagnostic application by clicking on the application Icon (i.e.

). If there are multiple applications available for a given component, a dialog will be

presented allowing for the selection of the desired application.

The application will immediately launch while PSI PowerLink continues to execute. If

PSI PowerLink is running in live connection mode, the application will disconnect from

the data bus before launching the third-party program. Once the launched application is

closed, PSI PowerLink will reconnect to the data bus.

Freeze Frame Parameters

If there is Freeze Frame data available for the selected fault, the Freeze Frame

Parameters icon becomes available. Click on the icon to view the Freeze Frame

data for the currently selected fault.

Key Data Points

Various Key Data Point collections exist for the following components: vehicle, engine,

transmission and brake. Each Key Data Point collection is graphically illustrated using

gauges, thermometers, etc. If a component in the Vehicle Readiness window is connected

on both high and low speeds then the high-speed data is used to populate the gauges in

the Key Data Points window. If the high-speed data is not available, then the low speed

data is used.

Lamp information is shown in each of the Key Data Point collections. If any component or

fault indicates a lamp status change, the Vehicle Readiness Lamp is updated to reflect that

change.

The current status of each of five lamps is shown:

Parking Brake Status: Switch signal which indicates when the parking brake is

set. Usually, the switch actuated by the operator’s park brake control, whether a pedal,

level or other control mechanism.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Signals an emissions-related fault code is active.

Protect Lamp: Signals a fault code or condition from a vehicle system that is not

usually related to an electronic subsystem, such as “Oil temperature too high”.

Red Stop Lamp: Signals a fault code is severe enough to stop the engine.

Amber Warning Lamp: Signals a fault code with a vehicle system but is not

severe enough to disable the vehicle.

Each Lamp Status can be shown as: Off (least severe), Flashing, or Steady On (most

severe).
