I am happy that we are launching the Newsletter of PSG Arts Alumni Association, ‘CASIANS’ in April 2018 to connect with all our alumni. I believe this newsletter would serve as a platform that paves way for our alumni to build a strong relationship with the student community. I wish this newsletter is updated with your activities and achievements. You have always nurtured and carried the legacy of PSG College of Arts & Science. Through this newsletter, let’s strive to contribute for the enrichment of the student community, personal development and institutional growth.

Dear PSG CAS Alumni,

Welcome to the PSG CAS Alumni Newsletter, ‘CASIANS’ The association has 10,907 registered members as on date, and we are adding 1600 – 1700 members every year for the past 3 - 4 years. The membership subscription is a onetime fee of Rs.500/- only. The college can do much for you even after your graduation, and so can the Alumnus by supporting their Alma mater in various ways.

We had an eventful year with the first meeting of the Silver Jubilee reunion of graduates of 1989 – 1992 batch. The association’s flagship event “Curry Masala” was conducted in the month of August. We had organized a Badminton Tournament for the PSG CAS Alumni, we recognized our Teachers during the Teacher’s Day and this year Scholarship were given to Ten deserving students.

Accomplishments and successes are the hallmark of PSGCAS. PSGCAS is ranked as the 11th best college by the HRD Ministry consecutively for the past 2 years. There are 12000 students pursuing various courses this year. They have achieved in every area be it sports, academics, co curricular / extra-curricular activities and have brought laurels to themselves and to the college. PSG CAS students always shine.

PSG ARTS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

The PSG College of Arts & Science Alumni Association having its full fledged office for alumni and students started in the year 2007. The Alumni Committee meets once in three months, serves as representatives to the ideas and concerns of fellow alumni.

One of the main purposes of our Alumni Association is to support a network of former graduates who will, in turn, help to raise the profile of the college. They participate as mentors and donors for the students.

Alumni Association provides scholarships to meritorious students who excel holistically. Every year, our alumni association celebrates Teachers’ Day and honors all the past and present teachers of the college. It organizes two to three fund raising programmes with the support of the Office Bearers and Committee Members to help the students through scholarships. Number of alumni get-togethers and Silver Jubilee Reunions are organized by the PSG Arts Alumni Association.

CAMPUS NEWSACADEMIC ACTIVITIESCOLOURS – 2018 The first year students of the Department of Visual Communication & Electronic Media showcased their visual design skills in their maiden event “COLOURS – 2018” on 11th January 2018. Prof. S. Balaram, Dean, DJ Academy of Design, inaugurated the event and was full of praise for the high quality of talent and creativity displayed by the young students.


CONFERENCE ON BUDGET - 2018

The Department of Commerce and PSG CAS Alumni Association organized a conference on “The Union Budget 2018” on 2nd February 2018. The objective was to create awareness on the implications of budget and involve the students in budget discussions. The programme was presided by Shri. V. Lakshminarayanasamy, Trustee of PSG & Sons’ Charities, MD & Chairman of Suguna Group of Institutions and President of PSG Arts Alumni Association.

OBESITY IN INDIA – GENETIC & NEUROENDOCRINE MODULATION

The Association of Nutrition & Dietetics organized an informative talk by Dr. Sue Royappa, Chief Medical Officer in San Diego on “Over weight and Obesity in India: Genetic and Neuroendocrine Modulation” on 14th February 2018 at PSGCAS.


PATHIVUGAL The Department of Visual Communication and Electronic Media conducted a South Indian Short Film Festival on 13th, 14th & 15th March, 2018. Directors Gautham Vasudev Menon, Raju Murugan and Bharathan graced the event.

VIVEKANANDA DAY LITERARY FUNCTION The Department of Tamil commemorated Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary by organizing various inter-collegiate competitions and events on 4th January, 2018.

SAINT TYAGARAJA GHANA RAGA PANCHARATNAS Students of Carnatic Music participated and rendered the Saint Tyagaraja’s Ghana Raga Pancharatnas on 6th January, 2018 which was the day of Pahula Panchami and the Saint Tyagaraja’s Aradhana day. The Carnatic Music Department initiated to select some students from other PSG Institutions and these students were given extra coaching on Ghana Raga Pancharatnas.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY International Women’s Day was celebrated by Women’s Forum on 16th March, 2018 at GRD Auditorium by honoring the 99-year-old Padma Shri. Nanammal, a yoga expert. Chief Guest, Smt. Sharanya Ari, Assistant Collector of Coimbatore shared her success mantra in achieving the 7th rank in UPSC Exams.


TECHNOLOGY BASED ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The Entrepreneurship Development Cell and Department of Food Processing Technology in association with FICCI Flo, Coimbatore Chapter conducted a 36-day technology-based entrepreneurship development program (TEDP) in Food Processing from 19th December 2017 to 12th February 2018. The training was sponsored by DST under the aegis of NSTEDB with EDII, Ahmadabad as the nodal agency. Mr. P. Vanjimuthu, Proprietor of Boomerang and Mrs. Uma Maheswary, Chairperson of FICCI Flo were the Guests of Honour.


i-WEEK 2018 Innopreneurs Club conducted an inter-collegiate event, “i-week 2K18” from 12th to 16th March, 2018 to encourage students to exhibit their innovative skills in different events and display their innovative products for sale at i-bazaar. This spectacular event was honoured by Mr. S.Prasanna Nandhakumar, Proprietor, Dainty’s, Coimbatore.

RAMA NAMA RECITAL The Department of Carnatic Music organized the RAMA NAMA Recital Program on 21st March, 2018 . The students of Carnatic Music and other department students recited RAMA NAMA continuously for 12 hours.


WORKSHOP ON STRESS MANAGEMENT A workshop on Stress Management was conducted on 20th March, 2018. Mrs.Ezhil and Mrs.Ponmozhi, Psychologists, Manamagizh Mind Care, Coimbatore were the speakers.

STREET TREAT Students of the Department of Catering Science & Hotel Management organized “STREET TREAT” - A street food festival on 10th January 2018 in the campus. It was an event to cherish and celebrate the Street Food Culture of India and give it due credit in the mainstream by making it more hygienic and popular.


MEDICAL CAMP A five day Medical Camp for UG and PG students was jointly organized by the PSG Urban Health Centre, Department of Community Medicine, PSG Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre and Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, PSGCAS from 29th January to 2nd February 2018 at PSG College of Arts & Science. A total of 3252 students were screened in this camp.

HOSTEL DAY Ponvasantham, the Hostel Day of PSG CAS, was held on 17th March, 2018. Mr. Mahendra Ramdas, Managing Director of Mahendra Pumps and alumnus of 1978-81 batch B.Sc. Physics, was the Chief Guest.

INAUGURAL FUNCTION OF SRIMAD RAMANUJAR PERAVAI The inauguration of Srimad Ramanujar Peravai was held on 27th March, 2018. Mr.R.V. Swamy from Sri Rangam.


FICCI FLO BAZAAR FOR WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS Women entrepreneurs of Entrepreneurship Development Cell and student entrepreneurs participated in the FICCI Flo Bazaar, a Women Entrepreneurs Bazaar at Suguna Kalyana Mandapam on 20th & 21st January, 2018. Our budding entrepreneurs were allocated 12 stalls to exhibit and sell their products.

The illustrious student sportsmen and sportswomen of PSGCAS proved their mettle once again by bagging first prize in a series of sporting events in State level Inter collegiate tournaments for the PSG Trophy.

Lokesh Viswanathan secured first place, P. Naveen came second and Athithyan came third in the Badminton Tournament.

Lokesh Viswanathan and P. Naveen of PSGCAS were the Winners while Arun & Navin of PSG CAS, were the Runners up of the Men’s Doubles Badminton Tournament.

Ms. Shamitha Devi of PSGCAS won First prize, the second place by Ms. Shaarika from Karunya University and Ms. Vaisanave of GVG Women’s College came third in the Women’s Singles Badminton Tournament.

Students of Jamal Mohammed College, Trichy won the first place, PSGCAS students secured second place and the third place by students of Sree Sarswathy Thiyagaraja College in the Ball Badminton Tournament.

In the Men’s Singles tournament, Mr. Pravin Kumar of PSGCAS came first, Mr. Javahar of PSGCAS came second and Mr. Shiek Abdullah of Jamal Mohammed College came third in the Table Tennis Tournaments.

In the Men’s Doubles tournament, Mr. Pravin Kumar and Mr. Javahar of PSGCAS were the Winners while Mr. Shiek Abdullah and Mr. Murali of Jamal Mohammed College emerged Runners up.

In the Women’s Singles table tennis tournament, Ms. Mahima Jain and Ms. Kezia Sharon of the SSN College of Engineering won the first and second prizes respectively, while the third place was bagged by Ms. Rhea Nihal of PSGCAS.

PSGCAS students won the Volleyball tournament, D.G. Vaishnav College came second and Jamal Mohammed College came third in the Men’s Volleyball Tournament.

HONOURING OUR ILLUSTRIOUS ALUMNI The Illustrious Alumni of Commerce were felicitated during the “The Union Budget 2018” conference on 2nd February 2018 for their contributions to the Indian economy.Dr.R.Maheswaran, Vice Chairman of Coimbatore ICSI, CA.L.Kamesh, Former Chairman, CA.N.N.Shanmuga Vadivel, Former Chairman and CA.K.Ravi, Former Secretary of Coimbatore ICAI were honoured to commemorate this event. Outstanding PSGCAS student rank holders of IPC Examinations of November 2017, Mr.J.Nirmal Prasath (5th Rank – National Level) and Ms.R.Harnika (1st Rank in Advanced Accountancy – National Level), were also commended during the programme.

ALUMNI BADMINTON TOURNAMENT

PSG Alumni Association organized the first Inter-PSG Institutions Badminton Tournament for alumni, faculty and staff members of PSG Institutions on 24th & 25th February, 2018. The Tournament was inagurated by the Managing Trustee, Shri.L.Gopalakrishnan and the President, Shri.V.Lakshminarayanasamy. A total of 44 players participated enthusiastically in the competitions and the winners were awarded trophies.


FOOD SAFETY WORKSHOP The Department of Nutrition, Dietetics & Food Service Management and the PSG Nutra Alumni Association jointly organized a workshop on ‘Food Safety’ on 26th February, 2018. Dr. V.Pasupathy, the Lead Expert at FSSAI was the speaker. FOSTAC (Food Safety Training and Certification) certificates from FSSAI were issued to students who qualified in the test conducted to assess their comprehension.

BOTANY ALUMNI MEET The 1988 – 1991 batch B.Sc Botany alumni had a reunion in their own classroom at PSG CAS on 21st January, 2018. All the members were registered as life members.


Dr.R.Nandagopal, alumnus of 1975-78 batch B.Com. and 1978-80 batch M.Com., was elected as President of the Coimbatore Management Association. He is the Director of PSG Institute of Management.

Mr.T.Rajkumar, alumnus of 1985-88 batch B.A. Economics, was appointed as the Non-Executive Independent Director of Smart City, Coimbatore. He is the Deputy Chairman of Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) and Deputy Chairman of Textile Sector Skill Council.

Mr.Rajesh B Lund, alumnus of 1980-83 batch B.Com., was elected as the President, Coimbatore Chapter of CREDAI. He is Vice President of Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Ms.G.Krithiha, alumna of 1985-88 batch B.A. English Literature and 1988-90 batch Mass Communication, was appointed as the Non-Executive Independent (Women) Director of Smart City, Coimbatore. She is a First generation entrepreneur involved in the manufacturing of Air Compressors, Motors and Pumps.

Mr.Ravi Sam, alumnus of 1975-78 batch B.Com., was honoured as the Distinguished Alumnus of PSGCAS on Founder’s Day of PSG Institutions in January 2018. He is the Managing Director, Adwaith Lakshmi Industries Ltd.

Mr.B.Rajendra, alumnus of 1977-80 batch B.Sc. Maths, was elected as the President of LPG Distributors Federation, Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry. He is the Managing Director of Sawatani Rubbers India Private Limited.

Ms.P.Alli Rani, alumna of 1980-82 batch M.A. Economics, was elected as the Chairman & Managing Director of Cotton Corporation of India Ltd., and is also serving as Director (Finance) CONCOR Ltd.

Mr.P.Nataraj, alumnus of 1975-78 batch B.Sc. Maths, was elected as the Chairman of SIMA. He is the Managing Director of KPR Mill Ltd., and Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

Mr.N.Valliappan, alumnus of 1987-90 batch B.Sc. Computer Science, was elected as the President of Computer Society of India, Coimbatore Chapter. He is the Director of EZ Vidya.

Mr.K.K.Rajan, alumnus of 1970-71 batch PUC, was elected as the President of SIEMA. He is the Managing Director of the Sharp Industries – Ventura Pumps

Mr.D.Suresh, alumnus of 1989-92 batch B.Com., Assistant Commissioner of Police, East Law and Order, Coimbatore.
