With planned developments and im-provements, Philippine School (Bahrain) is dressed up for a myriad of desirable changes as it enters its 21st year of ed-ucational service to children of OFWs.

EDITORIALThrowback

Our generation of advanced technology is more commonly known as the Plastic Era, main-ly because of the gadgets we use that are made of ‘plastic’. We are also famous for being the iGeneration, seeing as the stereotype of all smartphones are the iPhones from Apple, Inc. Our advancement is a blessing to many, but a curse to some. We could possibly be the most advanced generation yet or the generation that replayed the Stone Age all over again.

A century has passed since

and its high-tech gadgets. In those hundred years of devel-opment, changes have been made. Television screens be-came thinner yet bigger. The Wi-Fi, or Wireless Fidelity, was born. And of course, with the ad-vent of this change, the seem-ingly all-present touch screen smartphones was invented.

The children of previous generations are old-fashioned to us. They know not of the joys we experience today. They lived a life devoid of all the pleasures we can experience in the blink of an eye. But it still turns out that they lived a content life, far too different from the con-stantly wanting children of our generation. In simplicity, our ancestors had found joy.But what we know now is that joy is found in the number of friends one has on Facebook. The number of likes on a photo on Instagram. The number of vil-lages you’ve attacked in Clash of Clans. The number of hours you spend looking at a screen.

It seems that our joy is found in the numbers of our daily lives.

Gone were the days when you would receive a friendly smile or wave from your neighbor. In its place are many private messag-es and friend requests sent by people on Facebook. Gone were the times when you could spill out your feelings to a close friend. What we have now is a never ending stream of tweets sent by the people you follow on Twitter. Gone were the memories of actu-al physical touch with those peo-ple close to you. Through chats, messengers and social media, the only way we express our sen-timents now is through emoticons.

It seems that our freedom of expression and our right to voice out was snatched away by the advent of our generation. Living in an era where everything is lit-erally and metaphorically at your

used to treasure were forgotten. It is no doubt why we are dubbed as the ‘different’ generation.

And yet, we are differ-ent because we chose to be.

Of course, many would bring up an excuse that it is not our fault that we were born into this genera-tion of regress. If that is the case, then why are we not doing any-thing to change it? Why do we still continue the wrongdoings of soci-ety? Why can’t we become differ-ent from the generation of differ-ence? We know in ourselves that this predicament of our lifestyle is not a praiseworthy one, if one were to examine carefully. It was, and continues to be, our choice to bring change in the world we know.

Would our ancestors be pleased at the turn of events that is happening? We abuse the blessings showered upon us. We use them to create ob-jects that break peace and har-mony. We take too much from nature. We destroy the Earth.

Ang Tanglaw believes that we must bring about change. The gloomy state of the environ-ment we are situated in can be changed. And to begin, we must leave our bad habits behind and turn to the old values esteemed by our ancestors. Use technology for the greater good. Use knowledge to bring joy and happiness. Use power to rekindle the spark of the glory that was ours. Bring back the old way of living with a touch of modernity. Through this, we will emerge to become the great-est generation to ever have lived.

Are you addicted to running -

ning games? If yes, then you might be interested to know about the newly released game from SYBO games called Blades of Brim. Yes, the SYBO games who also created the bestselling game on both IOS and android called Subway Surfers. Blades of Brim is not just your usual running game where all you do is just running and collecting coins. No, Blades of Brim brings the entire endless running genre to a whole new level where the game-play of the game is about defeat-ing the enemies to gain a score. Unlike the gameplay of Subway Surfers where you just run and the score just keep on increasing. In Blades of Brim you have to perse-vere to keep on defeating each en-emy just to gain even a small point. Another nice feature that I saw when I was playing Blades of Brim was that as you keep on collecting each weapon that you gain from chests. It adds up as a score mul-tiplier and gives you a better edge over your rivals. Another feature that I also enjoyed was the variety of powerups examples are: poison strike which kills your enemy in one hit and the angelic wings which

powerups have a time limit but it de-pends on the character you’re using. Lastly, Blades of Brim is a newly released game which has a future potential. Some areas of the game may need some improvement but overall I give this game a 9/10 rating.#

Game theory: Psychological cheat towards MOBA games

Ever heard of Defense of the Ancient 2? Or even League of Legends? Maybe Smite? Heroes of the Storm, perhaps? These are just some examples of Multiplay-er Online Battle Arena games, or MOBA games. This type of game revolves around a player and their character, who engages in match-es with players around the world, using online connections to join a common server. With that in mind, I will be sharing a fact that can aid players in winning 55% of the games and matches they play.

You may be wondering, what exactly is this cheat? It’s none other than colors! As funny and comical as it seems, the chances of winning a match is somehow related to color. Developers state, and many professional players agree, that games like these de-pend on player skill, strategy and

-es of winning are 50-50 regard-less of the team. But how does color invoke a certain factor that, seemingly, can greatly affect the outcome of such MOBA matches.

In 2008, a study published in the journal of cyber psychology, behav-ior and social networking analyzed data from 1,347 live matches of the classic red vs. blue video game Unreal Tournament 2004. All of the games were team death match-es, where the team with the most kills was the winner. These games were played by evenly-matched players, so that the skill level of the teams involved would have as lit-tle impact as possible on the out-come of the study. After 3 months, the results were undeniable. It revealed that the red teams won 54.9% of the matches than those on the blue team, which showed a 55-45 matchup, rather than the expected 50-50. But that’s for the

Greek was the language of Homer’s literary works, the New Testament and the ancient Hellenistic Europeans. The lan-guage boasts of having the rich-est and longest history, among others. But nowadays, Greek is considered as nothing more than a ‘dead’ language, a dialect that only exists in the myths we read.

But is it really dead?Let

Greek to Latin. Now when one talks about language extinction, one can reply without hesitation that, of course, Latin is dead and will not be rising from the grave anytime soon. It is not used in speech nowadays, except for

texts. It eventually died as it mor-phed into the various Romance languages, such as Italian, French and Spanish. But unlike Latin, Greek did not transform into numerous languages but in-

from Ancient Greek into what is now called Modern Greek. It ex-ists in the vernacular tongues of the Greek people today, and has

language which, as of 2012, is spoken by more than thirteen

million people in the world. Also, do not forget that

when you say heaps on heaps of modern English words, you would technically be speaking in Greek! Many of the words we used today are derived from Ancient Greek, such as gram-mar (derived from gramma, writing), or telephone (from tele, far off and phone, sound. We still use the Greek roots to coin many new terminologies in the languages we speak.

I state that Greek is not dead. We just cannot recognize it.

(It’s also a matter of per-spective. Most people sep-arate Ancient Greek from its modern variant and say that while Ancient Greek is obso-lete, Modern Greek is very

language in two countries in the Mediterranean, Greece and Cyprus. But there are also people who see it as one lan-guage that evolved over the centuries, and some sourc-es say that Modern Greek speakers can read, with little

years ago, because there are very few differences be-tween the two languages.) Title: anthó

game Unreal Tournament 2004, and many other First Person Shooter type genres. But what about MOBA games?

Last year, a study for the Daily Dot was done, testing the same aspect, but for MOBA games. And what they found was a show-stopper. In 224 matches, the team with 34 more wins was the blue team. Shocking, right?#

The story of My Name is Khan is broad that it expresses a wide va-riety of lessons. Many scenes of the

the love of family to resourcefulness. These lessons develop from the sur-prisingly blunt character of Khan, who despite of his autism was able to show devotion, love and compassion and even after being put into unlike-able circumstances he proved to be a great protagonist of the story relaying great lessons for real life situations.

In his childhood, Rizvan was a brilliant student who showed interest to his education and displayed that if one is willing to be smart, willing to learn, even with hurdles such as his autism, there is a way to achieve just that; by taking the path of hard work and determination. His actions applies to our studies, where there are lots of activities and tasks that should be considered, but even with

reason to give up and fail, instead, we should take the task at hand as a challenge, a chance to do our best and this is where determination pres-ents itself, we should be determined that our best is enough for our teach-ers and classmates to appreciate.

Another lesson from Rizvan’s childhood came from his mother. She taught Rizvan that ‘There are only two kinds of people, good and bad,” which is true, each of us maybe unique but from our very core we can only

in a lot of ways. Rizvan encountered terrorist Muslims and was asked to join them but he refused, despite the fact that they were his Muslim broth-ers and it might not be a direct result of his refusal but Rizvan became a hero of a small town in Georgia for helping them, for bringing hope to the people. Rizvan grew up but he has so many lessons yet to teach. One is when he moved to America, where he became a cosmetics salesman. He excelled at it because he would tell his costumer the true effect of each product and not the exaggerated

advertisement. It is a small proof that ‘Honesty is the best policy’ but it can grow from that in real life.

No man should be able to judge someone by a general faction such as religion. It is proven by Rizvan’s love for Mandira who happens to be a Hin-

were able to set aside their differenc-es and focus on the great trait of each of them, which brings up another lesson; Love can spark from the big-gest difference of people by building a bridge of their greatest similarities. Discrimination should be eliminated and to do that we should not be con-sumed by the dark side of someone but be illuminated by the light, the greatness that always overcasts dark-ness. Plus, if someone’s Muslim, it doesn’t mean he/she is bad, if some-one is American, it doesn’t mean he/she is rich, creative or whatever.

-ter and not the faction they belong in.

Rizvan was autistic, it seems to be a high hurdle, too tall to jump over but it didn’t matter, he was able to help the unfortunate, to erase the bad image

bringing up the saying “Everyone can make a difference”. It doesn’t matter where you came from, how great your education is, everyone has an equal chance of helping others. Take for example Doc Hendley, a high school drop-out bartender, he helped millions in Africa to have a reliable source of clean drinking water and to think that he was just a bartender, it should really inspire all of us that EVERY-ONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE because it is in our nature. The only trait of humans interfering our com-

it is and always has been our choice if we want to help. Albus Dumble-dore once said that “It is our choices that show us what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” So choose right and light will show you the way.

One characteristic of Rizvan is his kindness. The time Georgia was struck by hurricane Molly, Rizvan

travelled back to Georgia from Los Angeles, a 2000 mile journey—with-out thinking twice that he would miss his chance to meet the president—just to help Mama Jenny and the other in-habitants of the town of Wilhelmena.

In Rizvan’s great mind, the value of competence was established, he was

-ers to car engines and he can easily remember information from certain books but these didn’t occur to him in a second, he experimented on broken appliances in a junk shop and read books in order to learn about a certain subject proving that abilities takes hard work to master and specialize on.

Rizvan’s commitment, however was displayed in many ways. His re-ligion, Islam was despised by many after the destruction of the World Trade Center, but Rizvan stayed loy-al to it, he followed the pillars of Is-

commitment to God is one to admire. Aside from God, he also is committed to his family, he spent his free time with them and enjoyed their compa-ny, he would take his son, Sameer, to school and play with him but what Rizvan had with his wife, Mandira, was special, he was a great husband who loved his wife so much that he traveled a long way to meet the pres-

Zombies. I’ve always loved zom-bies. The thought of a rotten corpse reanimated solely for the purpose of eating your brains out excites me. I remember watching George Rome-ro’s Night of The Living Dead back when I was nine...oh how I rooted for the zombies. They were way cooler than the babbling main characters. Who knew I’d come face to face with one? Although not exactly the zombie I imagined, it’s still pretty zombie-ish. It’s been a week since Earth expe-rienced a total blackout - of internet connections. Just a day after that, these “things” started going nuts. Ap-parently, they couldn’t live without it and it just so happened that I’ve ac-quired access to the only WiFi rout-er still working in the neighborhood...

‘Phone...phone...’ it grum-bled, dolefully reaching out for the cracked up piece of device placed on top of the table behind me.

I threatened to hit it with my base-ball bat but the thing already looked like someone beat the living lights out of them - bed hair, sagging dark circles below its bloodshot eyes, and broken Skullcandy earphones hang-ing from its bony arms - so, I just pushed it away carefully, trying my best not to make eye contact. ‘Sam-my...why...S.M.H...’ I grabbed the phone and sped out as it crossed its arms, trying to make out what I was doing. Outside, gladly, there weren’t a lot of them sprawling around. I hid be-hind a thick bush, mindfully scanning the place around me. I couldn’t see much in the darkness but about three caught my eye; nothing more. My eyes suddenly went to the old cottage at the end of the street. I was certain

an ideal place to look for an internet connection. As slowly as I could, I crawled over muddy lawns and slid past the three rummaging walkers to reach the place. With my God of War shirt all soaked up in wet soil, and my hair riddled with twigs, I stood in front of the old cottage, staring into its unbecoming exterior. It struck me as one of those creepy abandoned

to capture unwary characters trying to survive the apocalypse. Blimey.

I open the door anyway, shaking off the ludicrous thought. As the door creaked open, I gripped my bat tight-ly, thinking, ‘this is the part where a zombie jumps out and bites my arm’.

I stood motionless in the doorway for a moment. Silence. Slowly, I started tiptoeing through a long, dark hallway leading to what looks like a door to the backyard. I hated long hallways, espe-cially dimly lit ones. Unfortunately, the one I was walking through only had a

off from the ceiling. I held the phone close and knowing that the connection strength had increased was all it took for me to brave the darkness. The hall-way had a strange, frigid atmosphere, and the walls seemed to slide toward me as I moved closer to the backdoor. Impetuously, the light bulb exploded and I was left frozen in the middle of the hall. Using the phone as my only light source, I attempted to take a better look at the ceiling when, just a few inches behind me, a raspy voice whispered. ‘I see you’ve got...an inter-net connection...’ Struck with an inde-scribable sense of fear and distress, I stumbled my way through the door and into the cold, tall grass. Crawling back-wards, I waited for the interloper to break his concealment but I was only met with another sudden encounter as an ominous shadow grew in front of me. ‘Are you alright?’ I immediately turned to see that it was a girl. Not one of the zombies at all. Well, at least, she didn’t look like she was one of them. She was too...cute. She had long, dark hair and she sported a plaid red and black shirt - the same kind of shirt I used to have back in sixth grade. But I stood cautious anyway. Zombies can be cute too...sometimes. I guess. ‘Whoah, whoah. If I were you, I’d put that down.’ She said. I realized I’d forgotten to cut the “prepared-to-smash-the-zombie” pose. ‘Oh, uhm uh...s-stand back! How do I know you’re not one of them?’ She simply gave a smile and reached into her Star Wars satchel. Thinking that she was going to pull off some sort of a trap, I pointed my baseball bat to-wards her, stopping her instantly. ‘Hold on. Give me the satchel.’ She took two steps backwards, slowly withdrawing her hand from the bag. Struck with cir-cumspection, I immediately switched to my “be-cautious-she-might-strike-you” pose. Staring into her dark brown eyes, they seemed to be looking into my soul. ‘Oh no, please no...’ I awk-wardly whispered to myself. As I cow-ardly hid behind my arms, she took the momentum and quickly brought out an object from her satchel. I peeked in

of relief. It was just a book - Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.

There’s no way she could have been one of the “tech-nuts”. I mean, read-ing Shakespeare is pretty old-school...right? ‘C’mon, we better go inside. I could offer you a hot chocolate.’ She smirked. As a strong gust of wind blew past me, I realized a hot chocolate was just what I needed, but I wasn’t so sure about going back inside the house. ‘Do you still think I’m one of them?’ She asked, looking quite impatient.

‘No, no...not at all! It’s just that there’s - the house-’

‘...isn’t safe? Hah, don’t worry. It’s a hundred percent safe inside. I know because this is where I live!’ She placed her book back inside the bag. ‘My name is Samantha, by the way.’ She added. She then walked straight into the house, leaving me no choice but to follow her in. I would have hated to stay out in the eerie night. ‘And besides, what could go wrong? Well, at least now I’ve got a companion.’ I muttered to myself.

‘What brought you out in the middle of this “apocalypse”?’ She said, as she led me fearlessly down the hall and into an open kitchen.

‘You see- erm...I don’t know if I should tell you but-’

‘It’s up to you.’ She interrupt-ed, pouring some ready-made hot

I needed someone to help me out. I grinned at the thought of my bor-ing zombie movie-life turning into a post-apocalyptic novel about two strangers destined to cross paths-

‘..And drink hot chocolate togeth-er.’ Samantha chuckled. She had read my mind. My ridiculous fantasies had led me to an embarrassment I would never be able to shake off my head. ‘Sorry, if I keep on interrupting you. I just can’t-’ BZZT. I quickly grabbed my phone and realized the connection strength had reached its peak. ‘Blimey! The WiFi router’s somewhere here...it’s what I’ve been looking for.’ Before I could take another step to go look-ing for the router, I lost balance and

to see that Samantha had intentional-ly tripped me. ‘I knew you were after my router. Just because I carry a book around doesn’t mean I don’t need the internet, silly. I badly need to check this book’s rating on Goodreads!’ She opened a secret door just below the counter and brought out the WiFi rout-er. ‘It’s mine. MINE.’ She guffawed, as she disappeared into the distance,

That’s it. I was fooled. If only I hadn’t fallen for it, I could have had that router for myself. I can’t live with-out it! Come to think of it, I would have had the time to play Clash of Clans and read all the chapters I missed on Wattpa- Oh no. the school and the parents, the faculty of Philip-pine School (Bahrain) conducted the annual Par-ent’s Orientation in various classrooms of differ-ent levels inside the campus last July 10, 2015.

All departments discussed the recently in-troduced DepEd Order no.8 which focuses on the new grading system, the rules and regula-tions that are stated in the school handbook.

Then the high school along with School Di-rector Dr. Geronimo R. Salem, Jr. and High School Principal Dr. Ferdinand J. Epoc further discussed the preparation of the school in the

implementation of k-12 and the ongoing up grad-ing for the facilities and development of the school.

Furthermore, parents were familiarized with the two academic strands that Philippine School (Bah-rain) will offer for Grades 11 and 12 in the suc-ceeding years which are the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Accoun-tancy, Business, and Management (ABM) courses.

Concerned parents extended their questions to the teachers and added their suggestions to help in the learning development of their children. A new set of parent representatives was also elected for the Home School Support Council (HSSC) per level.#

I would like to encourage everyone to enjoy educational opportunities the school can offer within the bounds of its resources and support initia-tives for school improvement like working for accreditation.

We endeavor to design rich and sound instruction-al experiences so we can continue to construct, recon-struct and deconstruct out knowledge in our desire to cope with the fast-paced and changing social milieu. I am delighted to wel-come you all this school year 2015-2016. Anoth-er academic year has just started and we are having a tread for another success-ful and fruitful year. It is in-deed meaningful, purpose-ful and challenging at PSB High School; but it is full of excitement and enjoyment.

This school year em-barks the completeness of implementation of the Junior High School from Grades 7 to 10. K to 12 Curriculum, still we successfully managed and organized such endeavor.

Allow me to mention that this school year, we improve the teaching and learning processes. Teach-ers’ competencies and skills were more enhanced by having updating their teaching methodologies, pedagogies, and other rele-vant educative undertakings to make the learning as-sessments achievable and aiming for high standard of academic performances.

Teachers were giv-en opportunities to be re-

levels of teaching competencies and skills. This is to really de-termine their mastery and

to be assigned in different levels of specialized sub-ject. Blended teaching ap-proaches were introduced to hone the level of inter-est of students by utilizing the educational technology

while they are learning in the classroom. We can now easily bring the world in the classroom, and the class-room is the students’ world.

Further, we have add-ed the learning assess-ments in the academic progress report which are the Homeroom and the Co/Extra Curricular Activities. These develop students’ sense of responsibility in coping and accomplish-ing the tasks, may it be at home or in the classroom.

The high school is now intensifying the homeroom guidance program where-in real life situations are being tackled, expressed, and learned. The develop-ment of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activi-ties forms part of the holis-tic approach of learning for the total formation of PSB high school. The interdis-ciplinary project is continu-ously being required every quarter to hone students’ competence and creativi-ty. Moreover, the forming of Students’ Discipline Of-

closely monitored not only the punctuality and atten-dance but also the day-to-day conduct and behavior. There has been creation of discipline committee to adhere to the jurispru-dence of major violation incurred. This is to make the decision more appro-priate and due process will

All of these are part of the improvement in the high school for the better-ment and in consonance with the school’s vision, mission and core values, Enjoy and make the most of your studies at PSB high school. Have more focus and be smarter in your en-tire academic endeavor.

More than ever, as we see the improvements of the school on all fronts, we encourage all Filipinos in the Kingdom of Bahrain to take desirable initia-tives to assist the school in its developments. We should always remem-ber that Philippine School (Bahrain) is our home, our heritage and our future.

Philippine School Bah-rain has entered the third decade of educational lead-ership and service in the Kingdom of Bahrain. For the past 20 years, PSB has steadily improved its capa-bilities to provide excellent education to the Filipino youth outside our beloved motherland. And, the spectrum of expertise is regularly updat-ed to accommodate the de-velopment of 21st century skills among the learners.

KG and Primary Departments highlight Buwan ng Wika with Inang Tagapagkuwento

The Buwan ng Wika is the celebration of our national lan-guage. It is held every August of the year. Various activities are ar-ranged during this wonderful time.

The Inang Tagapagkuwento (Mommy Storyteller) is one of the highlights of this month’s activity. It was done by the Kindergarten and Primary Departments where-in a mother of a certain pupil was invited to the class to tell a story about Filipino tales, legends or fables to the little listeners. Af-ter the storytelling, there was an interaction between the mother and the entire class. Some treats like cupcakes or sweets were also given as a token to the chil-dren. One parent asked “What is the in the children’s class activities?”

Well, one is, it brings pride to the son or daughter of the mommy storyteller knowing that his/ her mom is willing to support class activities. Next, it can give extra excitement to the pupils as they experience being taught not only by teachers but by their classmate’s moms

They were given privilege to han-dle a class, get to know the children through interaction, and be acquainted

with the teachers. This was also a good arrangement for the teachers be-cause they are given at least a peri-od off from the long day of teaching.

The Inang Tagapagkuwento was just one of these many edu-cational procedures that help en-hance the children’s learning. This may take an hour or less but the impact and effectivity of this meth-od of teaching may last for years. #

Bahrain Specialist Hospital holds hypertension and obesity screeningBy Nichole V. Bedrejo and James B. Elloso

A hypertension and obesity screening was held last July 30 at the HE building, spon-sored and conducted by staff from the Bahrain Specialist Hospital. The study was led by Dr. Jaffar Al Said assisted by mostly Bahrain Defense Force nurses in three stations; one station for registration, another for the height, weight and waist circumference mea-surement and the last for checking the blood pressure.

The height and weight were measured to calculate their BMI and determine who were on the two extremes; the un-derweight and the overweight. The waist circumference was measured to tell how much fat one has and where it is stored.

The students were also screened for hyperten-sion, commonly known as high blood pressure.

Eat right, devote some time to exercise and take care of yourself and your en-vironment, that’s all it takes.” one of the nurses said.#

PSB highlights healthy habitsBy Mohammad Essa S. Awil & Grant Abriel R. Amandy

Students and teachers of Phil-ippine School (Bahrain) celebrated the Nutrition Month with the theme: “Timbang Iwasto sa Tamang Nu-trisyon at Ehersisyo.” The event was held during the month of July with various activities throughout.

The Nutri-Salad competition, which aimed to help students cre-ate a salad using a mixture of fruits, vegetables, or both, was one of the activities that were planned with a goal of ensuring that stu-dents learn the proper food choic-es and their nutritive value. The criteria for judging the Nutri-Salad was based on how attractive and well-presented the salad is, how much calories are present in the sal-ad, and how delicious the salad is.

among three groups in each level.

Another healthy activity was the Food Journal, which aimed students to write down their height and weight before they started the activity then pledge that they will eat healthily. After they wrote all of the needed information, they will start to note down what they ate after each meal (this also includes snacks). They also wrote down how many calories were present in each meal they eat.

Students also participated in the activity “Mixed-Up Breakfast”. In this activity, students were assigned to bring their own breakfast to school and share it with their friends and teachers. The goal of this activity was to bring each student closer together and to make the students feel that he/she is at home. Lastly, the culminating activities for Nu-trition Month was held last July 31, where various high school stu-dents from each grade and section competed in the Dance Workout Competition, where students from each evel showcased their talents
