Volume 4, Issue 9, 6 Nov 2015 Prayer for the Week On this week of Remembrance, we remember Jesus great sacrifice for us...Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends. John 15:13 Rev Warner From the Headmaster This edition of the e-newsletter is a one off special with links to polices that schools have to bring to the attention of parents every year. Whilst I know not everyone enjoys reading through lots of policies on screen it does mean we save on the cost of printing these for every family. It is important that parents take time to at least skim read these policies. Having them available to parents online via the website also means that parents can refer to them at any time and that those that are published are the most current, reducing the risk of parents holding an out of date policy. When major policy changes occur we will make parents aware of this through the e-newsletter and the website. This Sunday is one of the most significant services in our school year. Pupils and parents are reminded that the chapel service starts at 9.30am to allow those who wish to be at the town memorial for 11am. Next Wednesday at 11am we will also formally mark Remembrance Day with a two minutes silence and playing of the Last Post in various locations around the school. In addition to taking the time to reflect on this tragic event and the loss that was endured by so many families as a result of wars and conflict, past and present, it is also an opportunity to be thankful for all that we have and that in the main we live in a safe and peaceful country. Millie Dickinson (Year 12) in the bigger class of 1.10m height got to the final round and finished second which is fantastic: you will see Millie feature frequently in the Herts Ad, and she is a great prospect. Well done also to Lucy Moss riding so well in her debut at this sort of height with the team and Max Swanne on a faultless round. They all were impeccably behaved and demonstrated great team spirit, supporting each other throughout the day. The riders were good too....Grouse shooting team. Mr Day Head of Goddard House YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENT BOOKLET 2014-15 Click here to view SMART WATCHES Please could we make all parents aware that at this time we will not be allowing pupils to wear smart watches in school. Unfortunately whilst the technology has many positive uses they do create a number of issues for use in school not least of which are related to safeguarding the welfare and safety of other pupils and preventing a breach of examination and assessment regulations. We realise that they may be a popular choice for a Christmas present and wish to warn parents in advance that they will not be permitted in school. EXTRA CURRICULAR PROGRAMME 2015 Click here to view programme for Autumn second half term. From the start of next 1/2 term there will be a change to our procedure for parents coming in to school during the school day or contacting the school by phone. 1. If parents are called by school because their child is unwell and needs to be collected or the child is signing out to attend a pre-arranged medical, dental, orthodontic appointment or similar, then parents should use the entrance on Carlton Road and collect their child from the Aim Higher entrance. 2. If parents are coming in to school for any other reason then they must enter by the Sun Lane entrance, if driving, come up to the barrier and park in the visitors parking bay (not the coach bay) and sign in when necessary at Goddard reception. Whilst we are happy to receive forgotten items (packed lunches, PE kit, musical instruments, books etc.) at Goddard Reception, it is not possible for staff to ‘deliver’ these to individuals. A message will be sent out via the school’s information and management system (SIMs) to alert the class teacher to inform the individual that they need to go to Goddard Reception at a convenient time to collect an item. Request by telephone or e-mail to pass on messages and reminders to pupils from parents. Whilst we understand that there might be a rare occasion or an emergency when a message or a reminder may have to be passed on to a child there has been an increase in the number of these requests and it is placing additional demands on school resources. When parents call or e-mail school with such a request ,a message will be sent out via the school’s information and management system (SIMs) to alert the class teacher to inform the individual that they need to go to Goddard Reception. As a school we believe it is important that pupils learn to plan and organise their day appropriately and learn from the consequences of not doing so. In an emergency or when dealing with a sensitive situation we will always do our best to help and support and go the extra distance but we do not have the capacity to provide a personal messaging or concierge service and parents should not make such demands of them. PSA DATES FOR YOUR DIARY PSA CHRISTMAS DINNER DANCE Saturday 28th November 2015 7pm – Midnight Click here for your Dinner Dance tickets order form. SUNDAY CHAPEL PARKING PLEASE ONLY COME ON SITE IF YOU ARE ATTENDING CHAPEL Whilst we understand the urge to drop children off and collect them as near as possible to their destination, this creates an increased risk to children and other pedestrians when parents insist in trying to drop their child at the chapel doors on Sunday, regardless of the risk, congestion or inconvenience created for others. Unless parents are attending chapel with their children please either use the ‘drop and stride’ principle or the drop off zone by Goddard Reception. For the same reason please refrain from stopping on the pedestrian crossing to drop children off and please observe this crossing point and give way to pedestrians Thank you Headmaster Can you spare us an hour or two? Help still needed by the PSA please for this year’s Christmas Fayre on Saturday 14th November 1pm - 4pm. Time to put away those summer blouses and shirts for another year. Parents of girls in Years 7 to 11. Please be aware that the school rule for skirts is that they must be on the knee. Due to growth of some girls there are skirts that are now above the knee and will need to be replaced over half term. We thank you as always for your support in this matter but are sure you will understand our reasoning in maintaining our high standards. Mr Hollingsworth, Assistant Headteacher PE WINTER UNIFORM PE Kit Guidelines As the weather gets colder and wetter, we thought we would take the opportunity to remind you and your children about the PE policy when it comes to illness. If your son/daughter is not feeling 100%, please send a note in with them to say, however, we do expect all pupils to come with their PE kit (no matter what the illness) and participate to the best of their ability with their class. This may mean being an umpire, timing or keeping score. Please can you also ensure that your child has brought his/her tracksuit top and bottoms with them if they are to be outside. We always field a number of emails regarding PE kit and 'lost' kit. We strongly encourage all pupils to use their locker rather than the racks to store their kit. Many bags are identical, so it is easy for a child to pick up the wrong kit when rushing to lessons. Bags fall off racks and can get drenched in the rain: we still give kit marks if this is the case! Two kit marks will be a lunchtime detention and if a pupil arrives to a lesson without kit completely, they will get an automatic detention. We rarely have issues with forgotten kit, thankfully, but we hope you appreciate that we must be robust due to the active nature of our subject. We hope this guidance helps you to support your son/daughter with PE. EXAMS OFFICE 1. Exam certificates from summer 2015 are now available. Students who are still at the school will be asked to collect them from the Exams Office next week during tutor period, one house per day, and they will be informed of the exact arrangements via their tutor. Students who have left St George's should make arrangements to collect their certificates as soon as possible. If they wish to allow someone else to collect them on their behalf, they should give that person a letter to bring with them giving authorisation. Anyone visiting the school to collect certificates must go to Goddard Reception in the first instance to sign in before going to the Exams Office. Certificates can be posted out only on receipt of payment to cover the costs involved - £10 for UK addresses, £15 for overseas. May I take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of keeping these certificates safely, as more and more colleges and employers are requiring sight of them, and they are difficult and expensive to replace. We do still have a number of certificates from both 2013 and 2014 if anyone believes they forgot to collect them at the time, and I would encourage you to contact the Exams Office if this may apply to you or someone you know. We are supposed to destroy certificates not collected 12 months after issue, and whilst we wait longer than this we do eventually have to shred certificates that have not been claimed. 2. GCSE resits for English and Maths have taken place this week, and results will be available on Thursday the 7th of January. Students still at the school can pick them up from the Exams Office. They will be posted out to those who have left St George's by first class post, so should arrive on the Friday. They can be collected on the Thursday, but as with certificates anyone other than the student concerned must have a letter of authority in order to do so. 3. By the time you read this Year 11 students should have received their personal timetables for the Grade Indicator Exams in November/December. Any apparent mistakes on these should be notified to the Exams Office as soon as possible. They will also be bringing home a sheet of guidance notes; I will put this on the website in case any get lost on the journey, and I would encourage parents to read it (Home Page>Learning>Exams>Exams Information, OR Home Page>Information>Exams>Exams Information). They can be collected on the Thursday, but as with certificates anyone other than the student concerned must have a letter of authority in order to do so. 3. By the time you read this Year 11 students should have received their personal timetables for the Grade Indicator Exams in November/December. Priced at £4.00 each, available from the school shop, each one adds a little bit to our Christmas Funds to decorate the school for your child’s enjoyment. Please ask your child to come along to buy

one for you, for grand-parents, for themselves.

Bag2School: Next collection is on Wednesday 13th January Thank you to everyone who donated clothes to the Rugby Tour Fundraising ‘Bag2School’ scheme last term – we raised over £530! Thinking of having another big clearout? Just keep hold of all your old clothes, soft toys, shoes, handbags, hats, bags, scarves and ties, lingerie and belts. You can use any old bin bag to store your goods and bring to school on Wednesday 13th January by 9.00 p.m. Thank you for your help.

SAILING CLUB

SGSSC Racing Day A grey, wet afternoon with very light wind was not the best conditions for our 4th match against Watford Boys Grammar. This saw the much needed inclusion of the laser class to the existing topper class, allowing our older students to take part. The match comprised of 3 races over the afternoon and the results were favourable for St George’s. We won by 2 races to 1 overall, even with Watford Boys using their best sailor in all 3 races. Well done to all the team members, some excellent racing tactics. Thanks to John Kerley, Janet Dyson, Jill Tallentire and Lindsey Venner for all their help. SGSSC Laying Up Supper Traditionally, sailing clubs celebrate their achievements over the year and mark the end of the sailing season when the boats are put away for winter by having a laying up supper. We don’t have our own boats to put away for winter, but we have plenty of achievements to celebrate! We would love for everyone who has been involved in sailing club this season to come along. We are meeting in the dining hall at St George’s School on Saturday 21st November at 7:15pm. Tickets cost only £6, payable on the door. We need to know if you are coming so we can order food. We will be having a fish and chip supper, but a veggie option is also available. There will be a bar available for you to buy drinks. We have lots of fun stuff planned for the evening - quizzes, award presentations, promises auction and games. Come along!

Please email [email protected] book your tickets now!
