PS4FS Monthly Newsletter – January 2013: Dear PS4FS friends,
May you all have good health and joy this coming year! May our country, may the world, find peace! Blessings to our troops who could not be home for the Christmas holidays. May they be safely brought home soon to enjoy time with their families who need them!
Once again I thank you for all your continued work in this ministry. Updating you on our back channel conversation this past month about GS ps – 17 of you came forward saying you would help, so we will trial this and see how it goes. I am always amazed working with you – thank you for being here. There is no pressure to perform one way or the other. Together we are amazingly awesome and always seem to get the job done! Don’t you all just love it! Our work continues to add comfort, love, and even return much-needed smiles to our families! It doesn’t get any better than that! Peace, blessings, love, and good health to you and your families at this blessed time of year!
Note: Please notify me if your email address changes or if you prefer to be removed from this list.

INDEX: I. CURRENT STATISTICS (including Updated Army Casualty List)
II. COMMUNICATIONS FROM YOU III. DOVER PROGRAM
IV. THANK YOU NOTES AND MESSAGES:
******************************** I.) CURRENT STATISTICS:
# Prayer Shawls made since October 2007: 6,501 Includes Dover prayer shawls (yellow numbers below) # sent to Dover since inception of program (Sept. 2009): 3,339 # sent to Dover this past month: 38 This number is included in above totals # Prayer Shawl Groups/Individuals: 279
ARMY’S CASUALTY LIST:
There are a number of you who prefer direct contact with our families. Please remember to keep me up-to-date of how many prayer shawls you send to these families so that we may keep accurate statistics. If you take a name/town, I will not mark a prayer shawl sent unless you follow-up and tell me you have done so. The list of towns below includes “Next-of-Kin” of Army casualties who we have not delivered prayer shawls through our direct contact/mail program. It is likely a few members of these families have visited Dover Air Base and chosen a prayer shawl before witnessing the Dignified Transfer Ceremony. Often they return home wishing they had taken more, wanting to comfort a grief-stricken sister, grandparent, special aunt, uncle, or for the loved one’s children. If you would like to contact these families to offer a prayer shawl, send me a list of the towns. (Note: Repeat towns have been eliminated - multiple next-of-kin may be associated with a town.) II. COMMUNICATIONS FROM YOU: As promised in the last newsletter, below are two additional video links taken at the November 3rd Shawl Gathering in Hartford. (The final two will be in next month’s issue.) Below, it’s my honor to introduce you to two very active members of our ministry, Teresa Knipper’s group, Knitting and Prayer of St. Paul’s, Princeton, New Jersey, joined us on November 17, 2008. In that time, Teresa’s group has sent 16 prayer shawls to Dover Air Base, and they are excited about making the GS prayer shawl. You all remember the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy? Well, Teresa was without power for several days, but that did not stop her from driving up to Hartford to be with us that day! She told me it was so nice to be in a Hartford hotel overnight with hot water and electricity! It has been my pleasure to meet Teresa twice at the Shawl Gathering!

Another extremely active member of our ministry is Becky Bowers, who heads the Belmont Baptist Church’s prayer shawl group from Charlottesville, Virginia. Becky’s group also joined us way back in December 5, 2008. In that time they have delivered twenty-four prayer shawls to Dover Air Base - in several cases, they drove to Dover from Virginia to hand deliver our gifts! They too have come forward to help us make GS ps. This is a dedicated group gives prayer shawls for various causes, including ours! I believe this is the fourth time I have had the pleasure of meeting up with Becky and Martha Lynch at the Shawl Gathering! They are amazing to make the trip all the way from Virginia! Check out Martha’s lovely red/white/blue crocheted “Stars and Stripes” prayer shawl (including directions) on our website!

III. DOVER PROGRAM: One of the best parts of “The New Prayer Shawl Companion” book is being able to reconnect with former Army Chaplain Dave Sorensen. I thought you’d like to see what he wrote when I sent him a link to last month’s newsletter. He continues to spread good will with prayer shawls in his “afterlife” post Dover Air Base. Dave now lives in Wisconsin and writes:
One of the ongoing results of my contact with you and appreciation for what PS4FS does is my interest in people who make prayer shawls here in Wisconsin. We have volunteers who provide us with prayer shawls at the Lutheran Home where I serve so that I am able to offer prayer shawls to new residents and to residents as they come to the chapel and need one to stay warm. As I do, I inevitably am reminded of the good work we did together and that PS4FS continues to do. I think the interest in the 'gold star' prayer shawl is very touching. All the best to you in the New Year. Dave
IV. THANK YOU NOTES AND MESSAGES: Below we have a “dual-request”, first from a mother, and then (on the next page) from her daughter. Their requests came in separately, and ended up being fulfilled by two different groups!
PS4FS knitter/crocheter Terrie Hostmark, who lives in Morehead City, North Carolina, agreed to make a prayer shawl for a direct request from mother, Cheryl Baynard, who lives in Naples, North Carolina. Cheryl’s son’s name is SGT S. Matthew Baynard, DOD July 23, 2012. Cheryl writes: (2 photos, 1 left, 1 right)
Thanks so much. I plan on giving the prayer shawls to his son, my grandson, who is 4-years-old. I will explain the process to him: that wonderful people,
like you, made this in honor of his dad! Again, thank you so much!
Upon receiving the prayer shawl, Cheryl writes: The shawl arrived yesterday and it is gorgeous! It's so ironic that his favorite color was Carolina Tarheel blue - that’s the color of the shawl! I can’t even tell you how much comfort this will bring to his son. Is there a way I can request two more shawls, one for myself and one for his wife? If not, I understand. Thanks again! Cheryl (This story continues on the next page with a second member of our ministry)

PS4Fs knitter/crocheter Annette Swartwout heads two prayer shawl groups, one in Rocky Mount United Methodist Church in Mooresville, North Carolina, and the second at St. Mary the Virgin Church in Falmouth, Maine. She has belonged to our ministry since April 22, 2008. Annette is among our most prolific members sending cards to at least 30 names each month. She contacts me each month asking for names from the newsletter’s Casualty List. We thank you for what you do here, Annette and the wonderful knitters and crocheters of your two groups! You are truly a trooper among us!
Mother, Cheryl (in story above) told her daughter Zebbi Baynard-Sampler about us. Zebbie, from Hendersonville, North Carolina, felt it would also bring her some much needed peace! She writes:
I'm the sister of Sgt. S. Matthew Baynard. He was a first sergeant in the US Army Airborne. He passed away in his home in Seattle, WA on July, 23, 2012, at 23 years of age. My mother told me to make sure to give you my address. Thank you so much. Your gratitude is highly appreciated and forever praised. God Bless, Zebbi Baynard Sampler
Upon confirmation she would receive a prayer shawl from Annette’s group, Zebbi writes:
Thank you so very much. You have no idea how much this means to me. This is one hard loss that no one could've prepared for. He was taken from us too soon. Any comfort is enough for us. Thank you so much, and please let us know how we can help out with your ministry. We would love to donate and get involved in any way. Thank you again.
PS4FS knitter Roma Anderson, who belongs to the Needle Nippers, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach, Florida, graciously accepted a direct request from Linda Schumann, from Port St. Lucie, Florida. Linda is the proud mother of SPC Jordan C. Schumann. She writes: (2 photos, 1 left, 1 right)
I am requesting a prayer shawl. My son, SPC Jordan C, Schumann, US Army, was KIA July 5, 2011. He and two other soldiers were killed on a rescue mission by an IED. The only thing that has gotten our family through this loss is tons of prayers and the grace of God. Thank you for your consideration, sincerely, Linda Schumann, Port St Lucie, Florida Upon hearing Roma would send her the prayer shawl, Linda wrote: Cozette and Roma, I feel so honored by your willingness to make this prayer shawl. It will be extra special due to the closeness of the knitter. Jordan’s birthday is this week so it has been really tough not even considering Christmas. Jordan will be celebrating Jesus's birthday with him. We
continue to walk in faith and pray for the day that all God’s saints are reunited. Bless you both, you will never know what a blessing you are to us. Have a Merry Christmas, Linda Below is a moving YouTube tribute video of Jordan, including his wedding day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhXqBhHrcIA
Left: Annette Swartwout (in red jacket on left) with her knitting group. We thank you all for your wonderful “praying hands” filled with yarn!
7
PS4FS knitter/crocheter Nancy McCarty, who heads St. Luke’s Lutheran Church’s prayer shawl group from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, graciously accepted a direct request from Sunny Porterfield, not for Sunny herself, but as a surprise for her stepfather in memory of SPC Justin Robert Jarrett, DOD October 2, 2006. (Notice earlier DOD) Justin’s father’s name is Gary Jarrett, and he lives in Locust Grove, Pennsylvania. As Sunny writes below, Justin’s mother had received one from us, but not the father. We are always grateful to fulfill these requests! Sunny writes: (1 photo left) Hello, I saw your post on my brother's memorial page/legacy guestbook from 2009. I don't know if you ever received information on sending a prayer shawl. His mother and father are divorced, so you may have just received his mother's. I would love if his father (my step father) could have one as well. Thank you for all you do. Sunny
PS4FS knitter/crocheter, Robin Lambert, who lives in Vinemont, Alabama, has been with our ministry since the beginning, joining us October 25, 2007. She was the first to come forward to answer a direct request from Faye Ausborn, proud mother of Air Force MAJ Jeffrey Ausborn, DOD 4/27/2011. Faye lives in Gadsden, Alabama and writes: (2 photos, 1 left, 1 right)
Hello, I was just looking thru the comp. and I had never heard of the prayer shawl. My son, Major Jeffrey Onial Ausborn, was murdered in Afghanistan
on April 27, 2011. He was my only child. And he also leaves behind three children here in Alabama. If possible I would like to receive four prayer shawls. Thank you! Faye Ausborn, Gadsden, Alabama
