Getting startedWhat's new in PhotoSuite 8

What's new in PhotoSuiteThe PhotoSuite 7 application offers the following new features:

■ An improved look and feel makes it easier than ever to work with your photos. As you edit and enhance your photos and create projects, you will find that each activity takes fewer steps than in previous versions of PhotoSuite.

■ Organizing and accessing your photos is fast and easy with the new Media Manager tool. Media Manager allows you to quickly organize your photos and other media files within the Windows file system and create personalized file collections.

■ You can open more than one photo at a time for editing. When you select photos to open, press and hold the Control key to select several photos. In the Edit area, switch between open photos using the Open Photos drop-down list.

■ Several new painting and drawing tools make it easier for you to add your own custom art to photos, and to selectively touch up photo flaws. The new flood fill tool lets you select the pixels in a photo based on their color, and make adjustments to a range of characteristics such as the tint, sharpness, or transparency.

■ The new masking tool lets you define an area of a photo to edit, while protecting the parts of the photo you want to leave unchanged.

■ The edge tracing feature helps you define areas in a photo to cut out or mask.

■ E-mailing your photos is faster and easier, whether you send them as a slideshow, in the body of an HTML formatted e-mail message, or as an attachment.

Getting startedSupported file formats 14

Supported file formatsThis section describes the types of files that you can use with PhotoSuite. It describes the PhotoSuite format, and the other supported formats.

PhotoSuite’s Native Format (.dmsp)DMSP (PSPD in PhotoSuite 5.0) is PhotoSuite's native file format for edited photos and projects. This format retains layer information and allows you to “undo” changes made to specific objects when you have combined multiple photos and other objects into a collage. You can also undo certain edits if you are working in a multiple layer project or not. With DMSP, both the edited and the original settings of certain key features, such as the “Transform” editing tools, are saved with the file.

For example, if you save a cropped photo in DMSP format, you can reverse the edit later, retrieving the cropped portion. When saved in another format, such as JPEG, BMP, or TIFF, only the portion enclosed within the crop lines is saved. The cropped portion of the photo, the area of the photo lying outside the crop lines, is discarded permanently.

The output medium you plan to use for your photos will probably determine the best format in which to save your edited photos. For example, if you plan to use your photos on a web site or e-mail them, you may want to save them in JPEG format to create smaller files.

DMSP files can only be accessed using PhotoSuite. If you send photos in DMSP format, the recipients need to have PhotoSuite installed on their systems to view them.

Getting startedSupported file formats 15

Other supported graphic formats PhotoSuite supports a number of popular file formats:

Windows Bitmap (.bmp - .dib - .rle)

Windows Bitmap is the standard graphics file format used by Microsoft Windows. They are either in 2, 16, 256, or 16.7 million (24-bit) colors. Most Windows Bitmap files are not compressed. It is possible to save 16 and 256 color images in a compressed format but some applications cannot read the compressed files.

This format preserves the quality and detail of the images well. The default file extension for Windows Bitmap files is BMP. Occasionally you may see bitmap files with the extension DIB and RLE. Windows Run-Length Encoded (RLE) is a variation of the BMP file format. The RLE format features modest image compression, so can therefore have a smaller file size depending on the photo.

RLE files come in either in 16 or 256 colors. This format has two primary uses in Windows—as wallpaper and logo screens.

Joint Photographic Experts Group (.jpg - .jpe - .jpeg)

This file format uses several extensions, but all are commonly known as JPEG files. The compression scheme for these files reduces the photo image file size by selectively reducing detail and transforming the image into a data format more suited for compression. As a result, photos with fewer details compress extremely well, while those with more detail may suffer in image quality.

Getting startedSupported file formats 16

JPEG is an excellent choice if you plan to upload photos onto the Internet. It is not the best format to use, however, if you plan to edit the photo, because each time you re-save the photo, some picture degradation will occur. This is referred to as “lossy” compression, where some image information is lost in the interest of better compression.

For editing purposes, save the image in PhotoSuite's DMSP format as you work, and then save the final image in JPEG format.

Portable Network Graphics (.png)

The PNG format was developed as an alternative to the GIF format and, like GIF and JPEG, is used for displaying images on the Internet. PNG preserves all the color information and alpha channels in an image. PhotoSuite does not maintain layer information when you save a file in PNG format. This format uses a lossless compression scheme to reduce file size.

PNG files come in 256-color, True Color, and 32-bit color varieties.

Tagged Image File Format (.tif - .tiff)

The TIFF format was developed as a portable method of storing bitmap images. This format provides the most flexibility and the highest quality among the bit mapped graphics formats, but the files require the most space and memory, especially for high-resolution images.

TIFF files come in monochrome, 16-color, 256-color, 16-color gray scale, 256-color gray scale, and 16.7 million-color (24-bit) varieties.

Adjusting the sharpnessFollow this procedure to sharpen the edges, or the detail, of photos. Adjust the sharpness to correct blurring. PhotoSuite sharpens photos by detecting areas with significant color changes, and creating a light-colored line on one edge, and a dark -colored line on the other. The lines emphasize the edge and create the illusion of a sharper image.

The effect is more noticeable on screen than in print, if you print with a very high resolution. If you plan to print the photos, you may need to adjust the sharpness further.

To adjust the sharpness:

1 Choose one of the following ways to start the Edit task:

■ In Easy Media Creator Home or PhotoSuite 7 Platinum, click Edit

8 Use the sliders to adjust the following sharpness settings:

■ Amount: Specify the amount of contrast between pixels.

■ Radius: Specify the number of pixels (radiating from the edge) that

you want to sharpen. We recommend a radius value between one

and two pixels. If the value is too low, only the edge pixels are

sharpened. If the value is too high, wide bands of pixels are

sharpened, creating a “special effect.”

■ Threshold: Specify how different pixels must be from those that

surround them to be considered edge pixels and sharpened. To

avoid introducing noise (for example, in images with flesh tones),

experiment with threshold values between two and 20.

Creating cutouts and masksWith PhotoSuite, you can cut out parts of a photo using a preset shape, and save the photo fragment for use as its own object in a project.

You can also create a mask, which defines an area in a photo to which to apply one of the editing features, such as PhotoDoctor or special effects. The unmasked areas of the photo remain unchanged.

For information on cutouts and masks, see:

■ Creating cutouts on page 66

■ Creating masks on page 69

Creating cutoutsFollow this procedure to select an area in a photo, and then cut it out. You can use the cutouts you create in other photos or projects.

There are several ways to define the area to cut out. You can use a preset shape (for example, a circle, square, or rectangle) to enclose the area, or you can trace the area with your mouse, either using the freehand tracing tool, or using the edge tracing tool. Or, you can define the area by selecting colors.

Choose the method that is most effective for the shape or color of the area that you want to cut out. For example, selecting colors works best if the object you want to cut out is a distinctly different color from its surroundings in the photo.

Use the edge tracing tool if the object in the photo has well-defined edges. PhotoSuite automatically detects the edge and follows it, helping you define the area to cut out.

Creating photo projectsMoving, resizing, and rotating objects in projects 82

Moving, resizing, and rotating objects in projectsWith PhotoSuite, you can easily move, resize, and rotate photos and text in your projects. No matter which type of project you are working on, you can move photos and text the same way.

This procedure explains how to use the resize handles and rotation tools.

To move, resize, and rotate an object in an existing project:

1 Select the photo or text object you want to move, resize, or rotate.

A bounding box appears around the object. The bounding box is a dotted line, with circles called resize handles appearing at each corner, and in the middle of each border, top, bottom, right, and left.

2 To move the object, place the cursor over it. The cursor becomes an open hand. Click the mouse button, and the cursor becomes a grasping hand. Hold the mouse button, and drag the object to its new location.

3 To resize the object without changing its proportions, click and drag the corner resize handles.

4 To change the height or width of the object without maintaining the proportions, click and drag the side or top or bottom resize handles.

5 To rotate the object, use the rotation handle in the bounding box, or right-click, and then select Rotate Right or Rotate Left. You can also flip the object horizontally or vertically.

Note You cannot rotate objects in all project types. For example, you can rotate an object when creating a collage, but not while creating cards or calendars.

Using photo stitchFollow this procedure to combine several photos together into one, forming a panoramic photo.

The photos must share matching side borders, in which the content of the photos overlap. For example, you can combine photos of a horizontal subject, such as a landscape to form one continuous panoramic photo.

The following sample shows three landscape photos before and after PhotoSuite’s Photo Stitch tool combined them into a panoramic photo.

To create a panoramic stitch:

1 On the PhotoSuite Home page, click Photo Stitch.

2 On the Guide panel, select photos to stitch together from the Most recently used photos list, or click Add More Photos and select photos, and then click Add.

To select more than one photo at a time, press and hold the Control key and click the photos.

4 Click Rotate to adjust the layout of the photos, if required to line up the matching edges.

5 Choose one of the following ways to sort the photos into the correct order:

■ Click Sort ascending or Sort descending to sort the photos in order

based on their file names. This is convenient if the files begin with

the same prefix and only their ends are numerically different (for

example, “Photo 01,” “Photo 02,” and “Photo 03.")

■ Click and drag the photos into the correct order manually.

TIP: If you have many photos that need to be organized, use the zoom out button on the tool bar to see more photos and make sorting easier.

6 Click Next.

7 PhotoSuite will try to detect the 35mm equivalent focal length of the selected photos to stitch.

If PhotoSuite detects the focal length, then the photos are automatically warped and aligned.

If focal length detection is not possible, then you must provide the 35mm equivalent focal length for the selected photos in the step 8, and then click Auto align.

8 Optional. Click More Settings and use the Focal length slider to adjust the focal length.

You must manually adjust the focal length if PhotoSuite did not detect the focal length and automatically align the photos, or did not align the photos correctly.

Note The More Settings button does not appear if PhotoSuite did not detect a focal length. In that case, all the additional More Settings options automatically appear.

For more information, see What is focal length? on page 99.

As you move the slider, the photos in the Work area become more or less warped. The lower the focal length, the more warping there is. At higher focal length values, the warping may not be as noticeable. Click Auto align after every adjustment to see the results of the new focal length.

9 Optional. Align the photos manually if there are many similar items in a photo or not enough detail to correctly align your photos automatically.

This is only necessary if PhotoSuite did not automatically align the photos, or did not align the photos correctly.

In the Work area, start with the first photo on the left, and compare it to the photo to its right. If they look properly aligned in the middle section, then move one photo to the right and repeat. If the middle section looks incorrectly aligned, drag the right photo to manually move it to the correct location.

As you drag the photo, it becomes semi-transparent so that you can see the detail of the photo beneath it. As you move the photo, all the remaining photos to the right move with it, so that their current alignment is not lost. Once you have placed all the photos close to their intended location, click the Fine tuning button to snap them in place.

Note With manual alignment, try to align items in the middle of the photos, not the top or bottom.

Note If you click the Auto align button, any manual alignments made will be lost.

10 Click Next.

11 PhotoSuite automatically blends your photos together. If necessary, adjust the color balance, and crop the result.

12 Click Print, Save, or Edit to complete the panoramic photo.

Tips to help you get the best resultsFor the best results, follow these guidelines:

■ Do not edit your photos before you stitch them together. Edit the resulting panorama.

■ Use a tripod if you have one. If you do not, try to rotate your body around the camera as you take the photos, keeping the camera level and in the same position. Avoid standing and rotating in one spot and rotating the camera around your body.

■ Do not change any settings on you camera as you take photos. If your camera has Auto Exposure (AE) and/or focus lock, activate the lock before you shoot the first photo.

■ Maintain about 20% to 40% overlap on each photo.

■ Only use the camera’s optical zoom. If your digital camera has a digital zoom option, avoid using it.

■ Rotate your camera 90 degrees, and take portrait photos instead of standard, landscape photos. This may require more photos to encompass the scene, but the results will be a much taller panorama with more scenic detail.

■ Take your photos from left to right, or scan them in order from left to right, to ensure that the file names are in order.

What is focal length?

Focal length is the distance between the film (or CCD in a digital camera) and the optical center of the lens when the lens is focused on infinity. You can also think of it as the zoom level. Usually, the focal length of the lens on most cameras is marked in millimeters on the lens mount.

The focal length can be expressed in two ways:

■ the actual focal length

■ the traditional 35mm camera equivalent focal length.

The actual focal length for a typical digital camera is much less than a 35mm camera because the camera’s CCD is smaller than 35mm film. For example, a digital camera with zoom might have an actual focal length of 8 to 24mm, but have 35mm equivalence of 38.4 to 115.2mm.

Why do I need to provide the focal length to stitch photos?

The focal length is used to warp, or bend, your photos so that they can be stitched together properly.

PhotoSuite can automatically detect the 35mm equivalent focal length for some photos, but for other photos you may need to provide this value.

For a fixed lens (no zooming capabilities), look at the lens mount to find the focal length. If the camera is a 35mm camera, this is the value to provide PhotoSuite. If the camera is not a 35mm camera and no focal length is displayed, check the camera’s manual or the manufacturer’s Web site to determine the 35mm equivalent focal length.

PhotoSuite User Guidewww.roxio.com

Page 100: PS 7 UG - Freelenhutho.free.fr/roxio easy media creator home... · This section describes the PhotoSuite Home page, Work Area, Guide panel, and Command bar. The PhotoSuite Home page

Creating photo projectsFinishing the project 100

For a zoom lens, providing the focal length can be difficult if your camera does not provide the focal length at the time the pictures are taken. For this reason, we recommend that you take your photos at either extreme of your zoom levels. For example, if you zoom out to take the widest shot possible with a camera that has an actual focal length of 8 - 24mm, and you know the 35mm equivalent focal length is 38.4 - 115.2mm, enter a focal length of 38. If you took your photos at an actual focal length of 12mm, you would need to provide a focal length of 58 (38.4 divided by 8 multiplied by 12). If you do not know what the actual focal length of the photos are, then you will have to experiment.

If you cannot find the actual and/or 35mm equivalent focal length for your camera on the lens mount, check the camera’s manual or visit the manufacturer's Web site and look for it in the posted specifications for your model.

Flattening collages and objectsWhen you add objects like photos, text, and props to a collage, the file size of the collage increases. To reduce the file size, you can “flatten” the collage, or certain objects in the collage. You can also flatten a collage to apply fixes and transformations to the collage as a whole, and not just certain objects in it.

Follow this procedure after you create a collage and are satisfied with the result, to flatten objects within the collage, or the entire collage.

You can still edit objects and collages after they are flattened, but it will be like editing single, stand-alone photos.

To flatten an object in a collage:

■ Select the object, and then choose Edit > Flatten Object.

To flatten a collage:

Printing photosTips for improving print quality 119

Tips for improving print qualityThe following tips may help you improve the print quality of your photos:

■ Select a high print quality in your printer’s settings. When you choose a high quality print setting, the print output improves, but the print job takes longer.

■ If you are scanning images, scan at the highest image resolution available. Refer to your scanner’s documentation for information about setting the best resolution.

■ Select the highest photographic quality for your digital camera. You cannot store as many photos on the camera at a time, but thehigher-quality photos will give you better print results.

■ Use color matching, if your printer supports it. The colors on screen do not always match the printed colors. The color-matching feature improves consistency between on screen and printed colors.

■ Use photographic quality printer paper. Photos do not print well on laser printer paper. Choose paper designed for color or photographic printing so the colors are more vibrant. You can find photographic paper at your computer supply store or at some camera stores.

Note Some color printers require proprietary paper. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Sharing photosSharing photos and other media files 121

Sharing photos and other media filesYou can share your photos with friends and family by e-mail, or using an online photo service that lets them view your photos on a web site.

Using PhotoSuite, you can e-mail photos individually, either as an attachment or in the body of an HTML-formatted e-mail message (if your e-mail client supports the HTML-formatted message feature used by Media Manager), or you can send your photos packaged in a slideshow.

You can also e-mail other types of media files in PhotoSuite, such as videos, audio files, and VideoWave and StoryBoard productions.

Follow these procedures to share your photos or other media files:

■ Selecting media files to send by e-mail on page 121

■ Sending media files individually on page 123

■ Sending photos in a slideshow on page 126

■ Setting the e-mail options on page 129

■ Sharing photos through an online photo service on page 132

Selecting media files to send by e-mailFollow this procedure to select media files to send by e-mail, either as individual files or as part of a slideshow.

You can select slideshow files (DMSM or PSSD) as well as photos and other media files. If you do, then the DMSM or PSSD files are automatically sent as slideshows, regardless of how you choose to send the other media files.

If you choose to send the other media files as a slideshow, then they are collected as a new slideshow, and the selected DMSM or PSSD files are each sent as a separate slideshow file.

If you choose to send the photos and other media files as individual files, but also select DMSM or PSSD files to e-mail, you will go into both workflows. First you go through the procedure to send the individual media files, and you go through the procedure to send the slideshow files.

Setting PhotoSuite optionsSetting the edit options 139

Setting the edit optionsFollow this procedure to set the edit options. Specify a resolution in dots per inch (dpi) for photos that do not contain this information in their files. The resolution is assigned to a photo when you open it.

Whether a photo has a dpi value or not largely depends on the source from which it came. Scanners mostly support dpi; many cameras do not. When you save the photo, the dpi information is saved with the file if the file format you choose supports it.

Note The setting you specify here is also applied to any new documents you create using PhotoSuite. For example, when you create a new blank canvas, it will be assigned the dpi value you specify here.

To set the edit options:

1 Choose File > Options, and then click Edit.

2 Specify a resolution in dots per inch (dpi). Choose one of the following settings:

■ Professional (600 dpi)

■ Photographic (300 dpi) (recommended)

■ Sharing via e-mail or Web pages (150 dpi)

■ Viewing on screen (72 dpi)

3 Select a default unit of measure to be used in the Edit activities.

4 To keep transparency information when you save a PNG file, choose the check box.

This option is selected by default and can be overridden in the Save As options for PNG.

5 Click Apply or OK to apply your changes. The OK button closes the window.

Click Cancel if you do not want to apply your changes.
