Culbertson Chapter, the students met up with over 1,000 fellow chaptermembers from all across the country to dive deeper into the world of public relations. Each day of a PRSSA Nat ional Conference has multiple different sessions for students to choose. These sessions are set up as panels, lectures or interactive development workshops. There are also unique opportunities for connecting with public relations students and professionals such as a speed-networking session, an opening social and a career development exhibition. The conference started with students presenting chapter development sessions with topics such as expanding your student- run rm and promoting your PRSSA chapter. For the next few days, professional development sessions covered the schedules with sessions in social media, job and internship searching, and various PR elds, especially political PR. Then, there were lunches, dinners, workshops and the keynote address scattered throughout the conference. Conveniently, the PRSA National Conference was being held down the street, which invited students to some general sessions allowing them to interact and network with PR professionals. Sienna Tomko, an Ohio University PRSSA member, attended this year’s conference as a sophomore. “I learned so much in fourshort days that I probably wouldn’t have had the chance to learn or grasp until my junioror senior year,” Tomko said. Tomko, who is interested in health care or non-prot public relations, attended sessions in those areas. The second day of conference, she went to the health care PR session where professionals spoke about their organizations and the strategies they are using in regards to the new health reform bill. Annie White attended the national conference for the second time as a representative of the Ohio University chapter. Because she will be graduating at the end of this academic year, White used this second opportunity as a way to explore her career options. With herinterest in non-prot or government public affairs, being in Washington, D.C. gave her “a good perspective” of what PRSSA National Conference “The Capital Connection”: People, Press and Politics brought together more than 1,000 PRSSA chapter members from college campuses across the countr y . Eleven Scripps students attended. (Photo provided by NicoleBersani). SEE SCRIPPS ON PAGE 7
