On March 28, 2009, Cody Struck will be hosting the 1st Annual C3: Crandall Cares for Cancer Golf Tournament at Creeekview Golf Course. Registration begins at 11am and Shotgun play starts at 1:00. A fish fry dinner reception, awards, and raffle will follow the day of golf.

All proceeds of the tournament will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, where the donations will help support cancer research, education, and services for patients.

"Big things come in small packages" is an understatement when it comes to the heart of a child. In November of 2005, Cody Struck lost his best friend, Tre` Vinson, to cancer. The two boys had developed a close friendship and even raised money together for Pennies for Patients prior to Tre's passing. At 8 years old, Cody became an avid fundraiser for the LLS, wanting to raise money to help find a cure for cancer. This has become a passion that is heartfelt and rare to find in a boy so young. The first year after Tre` passed, Cody made it his goal to fill a 5-gallon jug with change, raising over $400 in memory of Tre`. In 4th grade, Cody wanted to do that again, and exceeded his goal by writing letters to over 40 people. His 5-galllon jug was full to the rim plus more, raising almost $1100. Cody is in 5th grade now and has set his goal to raise money for the LLS in memory of Tre at a very high level and that is why he is hosting the C3 tournament. The name "C3 - Crandall Cares for Cancer" was created by Cody, as well as the logo, and the brochure design.

In addition to playing in the tournament, there are sponsorship opportunities available. Cody is also doing something really special and selling the ability to sponsor a hole in honor or in memory of a loved one or friend. By sponsoring a hole, a sign will be placed at each hole saying who the hole is sponsored for and by whom.

Great and amazing things are definitely in the future of a young boy who has the heart to put so much effort and compassion into finding a cure for cancer. For tour-nament information, please contact Cody Struck or his mom at (972)427-3539.

From the Crandall MayorSince there is a lot of talk around town about Creekview Golf Club, let me

try to briefly clarify where we stand on the sale of the course. Although the golf course has not been sold, the city has a contract on it and we hope to finalize the sale within the next few weeks. In order to facilitate the sale, the council recently voted unanimously to approve a Property Development (PD) which rezones the upper portion of the golf course property to allow for mixed use development. The lower portion of the course adjacent to Creekview Lane remains zoned as agriculture. The Property Development allows a developer to build commercial, apartments, condominiums, and single family residential on the property. Addition-

Where have all the snow geese gone?Submitted by Brian Nugent, Local Wildlife Enthusiast

To many, nothing is more beautiful than a landscape blanketed with the wintering snow geese. The influx of white scattered across the bottoms, as one drives across FM 3039, can appear to be a fresh fallen snow. Over the years the numbers of wintering snow geese have seemed to have declined. Where have they gone?

According to wildlife experts, aerial surveys of the wintering geese have revealed some startling numbers. A short decade ago the surveys revealed more than 1 million geese to be wintering in Texas. The same aerial surveys being conducted today are revealing an estimated 350,000 geese. The surveys are not exact but they are viable enough to evaluate the population trends.

What has lead to the steady decline of the wintering snow geese? Industrialization has taken the place of more than 400,000 acres of wetlands and agriculture across various regions of Texas. Concrete has created a detour to the formerly traveled migration routes. While Texas has seen a decrease in wintering snow geese, other states are seeing an increase. With habitat being the key factor, the geese have shown their ability to adapt.

As the graceful snow geese continue their migration south they will be searching for habitat that can sustain their nutritional needs. Could Crandall and Combine be the five-star resort they are looking for? The continual develop of the East Fork Reuse Project's wetlands is going to do far more than increase the availability of water to residences throughout the area. The wetlands are going to provide more than 1800 acres of pristine habitat for many ducks, geese, and other migrating birds.

ally, it requires the developer to retain an 18-hole golf course on the property for 99 years and limits the number of multi-family that can be built on the property. The developer, Mr. Jim Hughes, who has the contract on Creekview builds first

Where to start! I would again like to say thanks to the citizens of Combine, and especially the Neighborhood Watch citizens, for allowing me and my officers to serve this community. We had a good quiet month in January. Calls are down. Suspicious persons/vehicles are up and that's good. Due to one of those calls we were able to make a good drug bust on Harlan Rd. Thanks to the Neighborhood watch participant who called in. Again I want to remind everyone about the new regulatory signs popping up around the city. These signs are there for your safety. Kids, we will prosecute for damage and theft of regulatory signs in Combine. I need to point out that we are having a large problem with dog complaints. If you have a pet, please maintain its shot records and be a good neighbor. Keeping your pet(s) confined to your yard or property is not only a courtesy to your neighbors, but it protects your pet, as well. Remember, a normally mild, meek pet can acquire a totally different personality if joined by other animals of its kind. Be aware of animal behavior. City Ordinance # 59 addresses vicious animals and animals run-ning at large. Have a great March!!

If you have any questions for the Chief or would like to make comments or suggestions, please feel free to call or e-mail me at [email protected].

From the Crandall Police Chief

It is already becoming that time of the year...storms and wind. Be sure and stock up on batteries for the flashlight and drinking water in case of an emergency. The Crandall Police Department wants to thank everyone for all the support that they have shown this year. It is greatly appreciated.

We want to remind everyone that the City of Crandall has an Animal Control Officer who will respond to address your animal control concerns. We also want to remind all of our citizens that it is illegal and very dangerous to discharge a firearm at or near a residence, whether it is occupied or not, and it is a felony.

Texas Penal Code Sec. 22.05. DEADLY CONDUCT:(a) A person commits an offense if he recklessly engages in conduct that places

another in imminent danger of serious bodily injury.(b) A person commits an offense if he knowingly discharges a firearm at or

in the direction of: (1) one or more individuals; or (2) a habitation, building, or vehicle and is reckless as to whether the habitation, building, or vehicle is occupied.(c) Recklessness and danger are presumed if the actor knowingly pointed

a firearm at or in the direction of another whether or not the actor believed the firearm to be loaded.

(d) For purposes of this section, "building," "habitation," and "vehicle" have the meanings assigned those terms by Section 30.01.

(e) An offense under Subsection (a) is a Class A misdemeanor. An offense under Subsection (b) is a felony of the third degree.

SPRING BOOT CAMP@REALTY FITTNESS

Submitted by Dr. Terry Tunnell, DVM-Crandall Animal Hospital

Watery eyes, runny noses and scratching pets are poof positive that allergy season is upon us. Many things can cause allergic reactions, in fact some of the same pollens and house dust that cause allergic reactions in people often cause allergic dermatitis (inflammation of the skin) in dogs and cats. Regardless of the source, allergic reactions in most pets are frequently observed as intense licking and scratching. Often leading to hair loss and secondary skin infections. For many pets, allergies may always be a part of life, but there are some things, that can be done to help manage the allergies and minimize the discomfort.

The first task to be addressed is to try and identify the source or inciting factor causing the allergic reaction. In some cases such as external parasites, the allergic problem may be greatly reduced or even controlled by continued resilient control of fleas and ticks. Many pet allergies are the most severe in the spring and summer, which coincides with the peak flea and tick seasons in our area. In severely allergic pets a single fleabite can cause intense scratching and itching for several weeks. Flea and tick allergies account for a vast majority of pet allergies, however; pets may also develop allergies to certain foods, grasses, trees, molds and pollens.

Control of your pet's allergies may require numerous treatment methods includ-ing injections, oral medications, topical shampoos, dips, ointments and environ-mental treatments. In complex cases, specific allergy testing or food elimination diets may be required to identify the problem. A pet's allergies can be very frus-trating and difficult to control. The best approach to relief will often come from a combined effort from you and your pet's veterinarian health care team. Once the allergy has been identified, be certain to closely follow instructions for care and exposure reduction. With patience, persistence and a determination to stay the course most allergies can be managed to allow a good quality of life for your allergic pet.

Healing Hearts ProjectThe backyard of the new Healing Hearts Ministry home, the Victory House, is

a poster child for the DYI TV show "Desperate Landscapes" - the deck boards are unsafe, the fencing has deteriorated and is falling down and the yard has stumps

big enough to break your leg! But if you ask the Healing Hearts founders, Mary Clemons and Susan White, what they see, they'll be happy to share with you their vision of a colorful, multi-functional retreat; one that is perfect for BBQs and get-togethers, with a child safe play area and intimate serenity garden for those seeking solitude.

Healing Hearts Ministry (HHM) is a non-profit domestic violence/sexual assault crisis agency that promotes healing and victorious living! The ministry provides life-changing support groups and classes at no charge and it's latest venture is the new Victory House. This multi-family home, located in Terrell, will (upon comple-tion) provide women and their children a safe place to live, as they transition to independence! The interior of the home is currently being renovated by volunteers, with funding provided through donations. Until now, the backyard disaster had not been addressed and needed someone to take the vision and run with it!

It was this vision that captured the attention of the 2008-2009 Leadership Kaufman County Class. Created by the Kaufman County Leadership Council, the Leadership Class Program is made up of business people and residents, who participate in a nine-month long Human Development Program. The objective of the program is to develop a diverse group of individuals with a heightened sense of community awareness, involvement and leadership. As part of the curriculum, each class chooses to do a project that affects a countywide audience and one which makes a sustainable, long-lasting impact. Last year's class was successful in completing a Genesis Center project (a pantry, a new thrift store entry, and resurfacing of the parking lot) through generous donations provided by the entire community.

This year's project (projected at $24K) encompasses resurfacing the existing 500 square foot deck, removal and installation of 325' of cedar fencing, landscaping and the creation of a play area. In order to complete the Healing Hearts backyard vision by May, the Leadership Class is seeking support from the community. This project will require money, materials, volunteers and prayer! If you or your company is able to help in any way, please call Project Manager Sonja Mullins 972-932-2118 or Mary Clemons at 972-551-2700. Working together we can achieve most anything and become victorious!

For more information on Healing Hearts Ministry check out their website at www.HHMTexas.org This organization has the hearty support of many local Crandall and Combine citizens who realize the extreme need for a transitional setting for woman and children recovering from the stress and trauma of abuse.

class high-end properties in and around downtown Dallas. His concept plan for development of Creekview keeps with that standard and is expected to be 5-15 year build out, depending on the economy. The sale and subsequent development of this property would relieve some of our tax burden, as well as bring additional property tax and sales tax to the city. We feel this is a win-win situation for all citizens of Crandall and are very excited about the potential of this development.

On behalf of the girls basketball team, Coach Butler would like to offer a sin-cere "thank you" to Crandall High and the community for all of your support of the Lady Pirates in the 2009 season. Although the Lady Pirates came up short in their area playoff game against Celina Friday night by a score of 56-51, the Lady Pirates had a great season! If you were not able to attend the game against Celina last Friday, night you missed a great performance by the girls. Celina had over

1000 fans in attendance which created a very loud and intense playoff atmosphere. Due to some outstanding shooting beyond the arch by the Lady Bobcats in the first half, the Lady Pirates fell behind by 21 at the half. However, they turned up the defensive pressure and stifled the Lady Bobcats in the second half. With less than 3 minutes to play, the Pirates cut the lead to 4 and had the ball. However, missed opportunities and fouls enabled Celina to hit some clutch free throws down the stretch and secure the win. Although your Lady Pirates lost the game, they showed tremendous heart. As young as this team is, they will certainly have a bright future and be able to utilize this playoff experience to their advantage as they look forward to next season. Congratulations Lady Pirates on a district championship and an area finalist season.
