Year of Consecrated Life Oak Park Illinois

“TODAY IN THE CITY OF DAVID, A SAVIOR IS BORN” Dear Confreres: A song of a Brazilian Catholic priest, known as Fr. Zezinho says: “All would be better if Christmas were not only one day/ and if mothers were like Mary/ and if sons were like Jesus of Nazareth.” Every year at Christmastime, we have the firm intention of becoming a better person. Nevertheless, after the holidays, most of the time we revert to what we used to be without many dreams and hopes. The song mentioned above and sung many times, presents the true meaning of Christmas. It reveals our mission as Christians and as Consecrated Religious: to be in the world a visible sign of the presence of the Lord. This will be possible if the Word Incarnate is our reality and history and transforms us into a pleasant scent of God towards others. May Christmas continue within us! We are Christmas! We are Christmas of Jesus, when we decide to be born every day and to change ourselves! We are the Nativity of Christmas, when we become poor to enrich others! We are the bells of Christmas, when we call and we invite people to unite and pray in communion! We are the lights of Christmas, when we simplify and give solutions! We are the angels of Christmas, when we sing joy and happiness to the world! We are the stars of Christmas, when we guide someone to the Lord! We are shepherds of Christmas, when we fill our empty hearts with God who has all! We are the Magi of Christmas, when we give the best that we are no matter to whom! We are the candles of Christmas, when we share harmony, light and peace wherever we pass! We are the decorations of Christmas, when our virtues and actions are colors that adorn! We are the tree of Christmas, when we strongly resist the temptations of our journey! We are the gifts of Christmas, when we are truly friends of all! We are the cards of Christmas, when the goodness is written in our hands! We are the dinner of Christmas, when we satisfy the poor and the migrants who are in our midst with the bread of hope! “All would be better if Christmas were not only one day/ and if mothers were like Mary/ and if sons were like Jesus of Nazareth.” May the mystery of the birth of the Baby Jesus bring to each one of us and the Province of St. John the Baptist new lights to illuminate the journey of our religious and missionary lives in the missions entrusted to us! Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year 2015!!!

“HOY EN LA CIUDAD DE DAVID, NOS HA NACIDO EL SALVADOR”

Estimados hermanos,

On November 28, 2014, on the Feast of Foundation of our Congregation, at Seminario San Carlos in Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico, Jesus Antonio Manzo made his First Religious Profession in the Congregation of the Missionaries of Saint Charles/Scalabrinians. We congratulate him for this important step in his life. Our best wishes go out to him in his theological studies in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

CASA DEL MIGRANTE – GUADALAJARA

“Casa Scalabrini” is a new support house for migrants passing through the metropolitan area of Guadalajara and for some reasons cannot continue on their way. The project was born within our local community CentroMex (Guadalajara and Mexico City DF) dedicated to training the Scalabrinian youth in their early stages of formation, but with an organized and planned pastoral activity specifically Scalabrinian, which is very significant for our youth. We collaborate with the Scalabrinian Laity, promoters and organizers of this

initiative, together with the seminarians. The building is 32 x 90 feet and was owned by a Civil Association that wanted to donate one of their buildings near the railroad line Pacific (called the Path to Hell) to a congregation that is dedicated to migrants. For legal reasons this will be an institution that reports directly to the Casa del Migrante in Tijuana, although its organization and management will be carried out by the Religious community in Guadalajara and the Scalabrinian Laity. We hope to start activities by mid-year in 2015. May our Founder accompany and guide us.

As you are all aware, in June 2014 we purchased the property (780.60 square meters) located on Calle 6° Avenida Norte, No. 714 - Barrio San José in San Salvador, El Salvador for the new mission there. In the last five months, Fr. Mauro Verzeletti, cs held several meetings with the SanGuateMex community and the architect to discern the type of building needed for this mission and has kept the Provincial Administration informed during each step. Fr. Mauro and the confreres of the local community presented the first architectural drawings to the Provincial Council in October 2014. The Council made some suggestions which were incorporated into the drawings in the local religious meeting held in November 2014. The drawings of the project have now been finalized and consists of a three story building to house the Seminary and the Casa del Migrante for a total area of 2,470.14 sq. meters. The next step is to begin the permit process. At the last Council of the Congregation meeting held in Rome in October 2014 the San Salvador Project was presented by SIMN and was approved by the CdC. I invite all of you to continue promoting in your missions or parishes financial support in favor of our newest mission in the Province - in San Salvador C.A. E-mail: [email protected]
