We have the results of our STAR reading and math tests. We have every student take these tests at the beginning of the year as a benchmark to see where they are coming in and what extra help we can give them to help them reach grade level if they are not already there. At/Above Benchmark means they are performing at/above grade level On Watch means that they are performing 1 grade level below Intervention means they are performing 2-3 grade levels below Urgent Intervention means they are performing more than 3 grade levels below.

We will be starting our intervention advisories on Monday. We have 6 reading intervention classes and 5 math intervention classes that we will be dividing students into to receive extra help. The reading intervention classes are further divided into fluency, decoding and comprehension groups based on their levels. The math intervention classes will focus on reteaching concepts that they learned in class, giving them a little more homework time with a teacher there to help them, and preteaching items that will appear in future classes. We also have a math competition team that will be meeting during advisory for some of the higher performing math students.

Teacher who have left us were due to personal reasons. As of the 2015-‐2016

school year we have not teachers leaving at this point.

Cactus Update : All elementary teachers are currently updated and in Cactus. I have 3 ARL teachers this

school year and 2 teachers who need to pass the Praxis. We are working with all 5 on an

action plan to complete all necessary paperwork. I am also putting in their letters of

authorization to ensure our highly qualified status.

Staff Updates : Our newest teachers are doing a great job at assimilating into our culture and

supporting our goals. Our coaches are doing an amazing job supporting these new

individuals in the building. They have met with all faculty to create goals for the school

year and are currently working with our brand new teachers on classroom management

and programs we use in the building. Our coaches also are working with our new

teachers from last year.

In addition we have 3 teachers in our building that we have brought in prior year

teachers (Mary Wade, Candalyn Winder and Alley Thomas) to help support them in

setting up their classrooms, in learning how to manage and in developing instructional

delivery in their teaching practice. They are doing extremely well with this support and

Curriculum Update: Primary Years Programme: In our Collaboration Meetings, where teachers are meeting with Kim to plan in the PYP, grade levels are creating goals to improve understanding of the PYP framework, study the essential elements, and create a stronger programme of inquiry throughout the school. Thus far teachers are showing interest in developing deeper expertise and creating new learning opportunities for students as they plan with greater understanding. Curriculum Programming : All teachers are continuing to build their understanding of Daily 5 and Daily 3 for Language Arts and Math, respectively, and are continuing to work within our Math Expressions, Words Their Way, and Core Ready programs. Coaching : Our grade level teaching coaches (Kortney Wadsworth K-‐2 & Kami Mecham 3-‐5) are jumping in and have already started working with all teachers in the building, focusing on four main parts of pedagogy: 1) classroom management, 2) lesson planning, 3) student engagement, and 4) lesson delivery. Thus far, they have had initial meetings with most teachers in the building and are working closely with teachers at all levels to support through trainings, collaborative meetings, observations, modeling, and planning professional development opportunities. Both coaches are highly enthusiastic and very positive about the direction our teachers are headed this year. Professional Development : We have started to plan professional development opportunities for our teachers. We are very excited to have our teachers attending IB trainings this fall! Our tentative plan is to send the following people to the following IB-‐PYP trainings:

Special Education : This year we have three special education teachers (Kama Maendl: Resource K-‐3, Kasey Hansen: Resource 4-‐5, and Emily Gibbons: Moderate/Severe K-‐5). We have a large number of total special education students whom we are servicing (approx. 90-‐95 students) this year. We are also in the process of coming up with some new ways of creating a hybrid of an inclusive/self-‐contained model that will work for servicing our students with the most severe needs so that we can utilize our resources in the best way possible and sustain the increasing number of students with special needs whom we enroll each year. Grade Level Events of Note for September:

Second Grade : Will be going on a grade level field trip to This is the Place Heritage Park on Sept. 23. Third Grade : Studying health, encouraging volunteers with a physical therapy or physical training background to come into classrooms as guest speakers. Fifth Grade : Sub-‐Zero is coming in on Sept. 11 to do a demonstration about changes in matter (physical vs. chemical change).
