Providence Summerbridge has a dual mission: to create a pathway to college for low-income,

academically motivated middle school students in Providence Public Schools, and to encourage talented high school and college students to

pursue careers in education.

"Summerbridge was a place where I could break out of my shell and begin exploring opportunities outside of my elemen-tary school bubble. The academics were great, but the sense of community, family, and spirit really changed the type of person I was developing into."

“The spirit of Summerbridge is very infectious. During the first two weeks I was burnt out from all my year-end work at Classical. My energy and enthusiasm levels were low. However, the staff meetings, the cheers at the All Summerbridge Meetings, and teachers and stu-dents soon sucked me in. Everyone who participates in it learns something. I feel I am a better teacher from participating in Summerbridge and I thank you for this opportunity.”

“Career-wise, SB is one of the best things to put on your resume. Leadership skills, team skills—those things all look great. But beyond the paper part of it, the fun and the energy you get from Summerbridge can’t be found anywhere. Plus, any other job you get today will require team collaboration, and Summerbridge prepares you for that.

“The time I have spent attend-

ing and working with Providence Sum-merbridge has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I have been a part of the program for a total of six years, graduating as a student in the spring of 2006. I was also a volunteer for the program in 2007 and came back to teach for the summer of 2009. Being a student in Providence Summerbridge definitely had its advantages because it helped me to gain more friendships and to realize more about myself in the process. During my first year at Summerbridge I was very quiet and shy but as the program carried on, the welcoming spirit and enthusiasm of the teachers and program directors brought me out of my shell and helped me to become the more outspoken leader I am today. Providence Summerbridge also helped me to express myself in different ways but most of all creatively. Through various Buggin’ Out Time workshops and events such as Arts and Exploration Day, I learned how to show how I feel in certain situations. These artistic days also helped me to realize how much I want to work to become a journalist in college, while also showing me how much hard work I should put into my dreams to have them come true. Coming back in the summer of 2009 as a teacher was one of the most inspiring and rewarding decisions that I have ever made. Making so many connections with my stu-dents and the rest of the Providence Summerbridge community has continued my en-thusiasm and support for ‘students teaching students.’ It was a busy summer which taught me how to be more responsible and hard-working, but even though it was a lot of work, everything I had to complete and work for was definitely worth it because it was all for the kids.“

“Working at Summerbridge really did change my life, and I still feel an extremely strong connection to it. Everything from the spirit, the kindness, the respect, to the focus on academics, the sense of community, and the high behavioral expectations inspires me to make my classroom a better place every day. I think without having taught at SB I would have very little positivity to model my classroom on. Summerbridge showed me what is possible.”
