In 2016 we set out on a bold mission: to address the unmet health needs for the

greater Walla Walla Valley. Our first priority is a Healthy Youth Initiative to create a

healthier community for kids and their parents.

We were motivated by some alarming statistics. According to the Washington State

Department of Health, 69% of sixth graders in Walla Walla County are exercising

less than 60 minutes a day. Half are watching AT LEAST 3 hours of screen time per

day. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that

18% of children are obese, up from 7% in the 1980s.

As a community we must respond and we have. Through partnerships with Walla

Walla, College Place and Athena-Weston schools, more than 1,000 fourth graders

are participating in Sqord. This is an innovative program that uses technology to

make physical activity fun! Sqord is 100% funded by generous donors like you and

is just one example of how we are thinking differently about the role our Founda-

tion will play in supporting health care in our Valley.

While funding for programs and equipment is vital and will continue, we are

excited to venture beyond that and begin supporting proactive and preventive care

to encourage those in our community to lead healthier lifestyles.

Celebrating our impact

Donors and senior leaders recently gathered to celebrate the open-

ing of a new Family Room for the inpatient rehabilitation program.

The Family Room was fully funded by donations from the 2016 golf

tournament funding focus.

The room is multi-purpose and offers a social dining area where

patients can connect with each other. The space also offers ameni-

ties such as a regular bed, reclining chair and bathroom with a tub.

People who’ve experienced loss of function from an illness, injury or

surgery can practice in a home-like environment before transition

from the hospital.

Berney Elementary Kids Say ‘Thanks’ for Sqord

Celebrating Our New Rehabilitation Family Room

Berney Elementary fourth grade students and teachers sent a thank

you card, letter and collage to say ‘thanks’ for their Sqord wristbands.

The letter describes how teachers are already seeing positive life style

changes within families. The Sqord program was launched in Octo-

ber of 2016 to 1,000 fourth graders in Walla Walla, College Place

and Athena-Weston schools and will expand to other areas, includ-

ing Dayton, Waitsburg and Milton-Freewater next school year.

Sqord is part of our broader Healthy Youth Initiative – a bold and

exciting vision that focuses on proactive, preventive health care.
