Providence FoUndATionS in oreGon 2 2013 AnnUAl rePorT

dear Friend of Providence, every year we feel blessed to have your support and commitment, and 2013 was no exception. Because of your generosity and dedication, Providence in oregon took many important steps forward in our ongoing journey of providing excellent, compassionate service to our patients and communities.

We hope you enjoy and are inspired by the stories in this annual report – all of which you helped make possible. Whether it’s a nursing center resident enjoying greater mobility, a mother who knows her child is well cared for while she receives medical treatment, family members who feel blessed knowing their loved one is receiving excellent care near the end of life, a father whose sudden stroke is quickly assessed and treated close to home, or a young woman who faces breast cancer with new hope and possibility … all of these stories, and many more, exist because you care.

“Thank you” seems inadequate, but it is heartfelt. Providence literally couldn’t be Providence without your faith, enthusiasm, support, talents and energy. Thank you wholeheartedly on behalf of all those we serve.

n Palliative care improves quality of life

Generous donors in the Columbia Gorge community are committed to helping those who are ill and vulnerable, including in the important area of palliative care. For patients with chronic, debilitating illness or pain, multidisciplinary palliative care teams can ensure patients receive ongoing medical, spiritual, emotional and family support with a goal of improving their quality of life. Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital Foundation donors and funding partners, PacificSource Health Plans and Cambia Health Foundation, have joined together to fund the OASIS (Offering Advocacy and Support in Illness and Suffering) Palliative Care Team to ensure the best possible path toward a fulfilling life, regardless of disease.

n Resident Jesuit volunteers

In 2013 the foundation and generous donors provided financial support for four out of the six total resident Jesuit Volunteer Corps members who work with the community’s poor and vulnerable. The foundation-supported JVCs are working in placements in public health, food security assistance and youth programs through local schools. Each Jesuit volunteer is a recent college graduate with a passion for improving people’s health and well-being. Each person gives a year of service (or more) while living among the people they serve, and each works to transform the lives of those in their care through hard work and personal dedication.

Pictured is the palliative care team (front row, left to right): Fannie Domijan, medical interpreter; Nina Van Es, nurse practitioner; Jill Rowland, chaplain; and Cathy Blair, social worker; (back row, left to right): Erin Rudolph, community outreach analyst; Mark Thomas, director of Spiritual Care and Mission Integration; and Christine Meade, discharge planner.

Providence employees and community members joined to establish and support a Jesuit Volunteer Corps community with foundation support.
