dear Friend of Providence, every year we feel blessed to have your support and commitment, and 2013 was no exception. Because of your generosity and dedication, Providence in oregon took many important steps forward in our ongoing journey of providing excellent, compassionate service to our patients and communities.

We hope you enjoy and are inspired by the stories in this annual report – all of which you helped make possible. Whether it’s a nursing center resident enjoying greater mobility, a mother who knows her child is well cared for while she receives medical treatment, family members who feel blessed knowing their loved one is receiving excellent care near the end of life, a father whose sudden stroke is quickly assessed and treated close to home, or a young woman who faces breast cancer with new hope and possibility … all of these stories, and many more, exist because you care.

“Thank you” seems inadequate, but it is heartfelt. Providence literally couldn’t be Providence without your faith, enthusiasm, support, talents and energy. Thank you wholeheartedly on behalf of all those we serve.

n supporting the community’s dental needs

On July 8, 2013, the Joseph Bernard Jr., Dental Clinic opened adjacent to Providence Milwaukie Hospital. The clinic provides dental services for low-income, uninsured and underinsured community members who don’t have access to dental care. The clinic also will serve more than 1,600 patients who visit the Providence Milwaukie Emergency Department every year for dental pain. The clinic is operated by Neighborhood Health Center, a federally qualified provider of medical, mental health, dental and other health services, and expects to serve more than 250 patients a month. In addition to restoring teeth, the clinic emphasizes prevention and education in cooperation with Pacific University College of Dental Hygiene and Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry.

Providence Milwaukie Foundation hosted its annual fundraiser, Partners in Health, to benefit the new dental clinic – reaching the foundation’s fundraising goal of $447,000. The event was a tremendous success in raising awareness of the great work done by our generous donors and foundation members. The evening featured emcee Mike Donahue; foundation board chair Jeff Dulcich; board member Shirish Patel, M.D.; Mike Plunkett, D.D.S., CareOregon dental director and a practitioner at Neighborhood Dental Center; and James Stroshschein, D.D.S., Neighborhood Dental Center.

n growing to meet community needs

What started as a conference-table conversation has become a tremendous success. Members of the Providence Milwaukie “Green Team” and other employee volunteers have transformed a vacant lot owned by the hospital into a community garden that serves community members in need. The community garden now boasts 29 raised beds, four additional herb beds and two potato beds, from which Providence Milwaukie employees harvested 1,849 pounds of vegetables and fruit in 2013. The food is donated to the hospital’s neighbors at Hillside Manor and Oregon Food Bank, and also to Esther’s Pantry, which provides food and personal care items to low-income people living with HIV/AIDS. Employees donate their time and energy to the garden and also contribute money as part of the annual Employee Giving Campaign.

With the opening of the Joseph Bernard Jr., Dental Clinic, a much-needed community service is being fulfilled. The clinic was spearheaded by the Bernard family in honor of Joseph who was a community supporter and former mayor. (From the left): Keith Hyde, Providence Milwaukie Hospital chief executive, and Joe’s family at the clinic’s open house: Joseph Bernard (son), Shirley Bernard (wife), Joan Bernard McFadden (daughter), James Bernard (son) and John Bernard (son).

A few of the 135 guests at Partners in Health included Jeff Dulcich, foundation board chair, Jeff’s sister, Anne Bisio, and their father, Dominique Dulcich.
