CONGRATULATIONS MRS. NIELSON AND YEAR 5! Last term I had the pleasure of attending our Year 5 students’ presentation of their Night of the Notables. Our Prouille students need to be commended for their commitment, dedication, enthusiasm and excellence in engaging in deep learning and meaningful research. This year the children were asked to research a person who was an eminent Australian who had shown resilience and persistence in their careers or life. This meant that they had to think broadly and work hard at narrowing down their thoughts and ideas. Chosen notables also had to have made a significant impact on humanity for the betterment of mankind.

The children developed and utilised advanced communication skills and personal creativity in their presentations. It was amazing to see the children take on the role of their chosen notable and present their identified gifts, how they responded to education, opportunity, mentoring, overcoming adversity, determination, resilience and persistence in their pathway to reach out and make the world a better place for all. Congratulations to Mrs.Jo Nielson for leading this fantastic learning opportunity and to our notables:

Mary MacKillop - Adrina Widjaja; Chris Brown - Cadence Barnett; Fiona Wood - Ellie Taylor;

Jana Pitman - Hannah Bayldon; Ted Serong - Ines Texiera-Pinto; Dick Smith - Isaac Wright;

WALKING THE WAY – CSO INITIATIVE FOR PARENTS AND SCHOOL COMMUNITIES The staff participated in a Spirituality Day on the last day of Term (Friday 22nd September) which was focused on the ‘Walking the Way’ program that the CSO has begun to implement this year. It was a day filled with reflection, experiences and exploration surrounding the central theme of ‘accompaniment’ – accompanying the children and their families on their journey of faith.

The program offers you a chance to come together as a parent community, for reflection opportunities here at the school. This Term, being our first Term of the program, we will be having two reflection mornings (please refer to invitation below).

CANDELA MISSION PERU

Mrs Mary Rajca will visit on Monday October 16th to speak to the students about the work of the Sisters of Mercy in the shanty town of Candela in Lima Peru.

The mission in Candela helps women through a program that teaches them to make beautiful handicrafts. The sale of these crafts gives the women an income so they can provide for their families. There will be a sale of the beautiful handicrafts that the women have made during the week. All items cost between $2 - $10 All funds raised go back to the women who have made the goods. This money is used by the women to buy basic necessities for their families. Our school has supported the Candela mission and much has been done to improve the lives of these women and their families. Your support of the mission is greatly appreciated. Wishing you blessings and joy,

Jessica Russell

Religious Education Coordinator

Parent Engagement Update

T4, W1

Update on Future Ready Conference The Future Ready conference, hosted by Broken Bay Catholic Schools Parents, was held in September. It was a great conference, with many informative sessions and lots of interesting speakers. I will share information from the conference over the next few weeks in my newsletter sections. Here’s the first instalment.

Future Ready Conference Prof. Lea Waters - Strength Based Parenting.

Website: leawaters.com

Who is Prof. Lea Waters? She is a psychologist, researcher, speaker and author who specialises in positive education, positive parenting and positive organisations. She has been included in the 2017 edition of Who’s Who of Australian Women. You may recognise her from the ABC documentary “Revolution School”.

What is Strength Based Parenting ? Put simply, it is focussing on your child’s strengths, making them aware of their strengths and helping them to maximise them.

Did you know? 26% of young Aussies experience mental illness. 3 out of 4 parents feel stressed (no surprise there!)

Her key message was that your child is stronger than you think, and everywhere they go their strengths go with them. What a great thing to tell your child! - whatever happens to you, you will always have your strengths. Lea also stressed that if we, as parents, look first for strengths in every situation that we will have better outcomes for our kids.

Do we, as adults, know what our strengths are? Do our children know theirs? Probably not. There are great free resources on Lea’s website including surveys and templates to help you identify your - and your children’s - strengths.

The Book A copy of her book was purchased and is now available in the parent section of the library - just see Jo Neilson
