Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major August 5

First raised at the order of Pope Liberius in the mid-fourth cen-tury, the Liberian basilica was rebuilt by Pope Sixtus III shortly a er the Council of Ephesus affirmed Mary’s tle as Mother of God in 431. Rededicated at that me to the Mother of God, St. Mary Major is the largest church in the world honoring God through Mary. Standing atop one of Rome’s seven hills, the Esquiline, it has survived many restora ons without losing its character as an early Roman basilica. Its interior retains three naves divided by colonnades in the style of Constan ne’s era. Fi h-century mosaics on its walls tes fy to its an quity. St. Mary Major is one of the four Roman basilicas known as patri-archal cathedrals in memory of the first centers of the Church. St. John Lateran represents Rome, the See of Peter; St. Paul Outside the Walls, the See of Alexandria, allegedly the see pre-sided over by Mark; St. Peter’s, the See of Constan nople; and St. Mary’s, the See of An och, where Mary is supposed to have spent most of her later life. One legend, unreported before the year 1000, gives another name to this feast: Our Lady of the Snows. According to that story, a wealthy Roman couple pledged their fortune to the Mother of God. In affirma on, she produced a miraculous sum-mer snowfall and told them to build a church on the site. The legend was long celebrated by releasing a shower of white rose petals from the basilica’s dome every August 5. Reflection: Theological debate over Christ’s nature as God and man reached fever pitch in Constan nople in the early fi h century. The chaplain of Bishop Nestorius began preaching against the tle Theotokos, “Mother of God,” insis ng that the Virgin was mother only of the human Jesus. Nestorius agreed, decreeing that Mary would henceforth be named “Mother of Christ” in his see. The people of Constan nople virtually revolt-ed against their bishop’s refuta on of a cherished belief. When the Council of Ephesus refuted Nestorius, believers took to the streets, enthusias cally chan ng, “Theotokos! Theotokos!” courtesy: franciscanmedia.org

Where Are The Other Nine? ByMaryMarthaPrimerano When was the last time you cried when you received your bagged groceries at the grocery store? We were touched to the core of our hearts, when during min-istry one of our grocery bag recipients returned to our team to say thank you! Constantine was so filled with gratitude that he asked if he could pray for us! And this is exactly what he did after he discovered his delectable goodies inside his grocery bag. It was no “Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep” prayer. No sir - this prayer was powerful and full of faith, as his eyes were filled and flowed with tears - Wow! Talk about gratitude! It was like the story cut straight out of the bible, found in Luke 17:11-19. 10 lepers were healed by Jesus, but only 1 returned to thank him. Jesus had taken note that 10 were healed. Where are the other nine he asked? Let’s be like that 1 who returns to Jesus to say thank you because gratitude is a powerful thing.

“ A B R E S T Ú L A M A N O , S E Ñ O R , Y N O S S A C I A S D E FAVO R E S ”

CO MIE RON T ODO S HA STA QUEDAR SATISFECHOS Mateo 14,13-21.
