CHAPTER 21 .1 -21 .3
Protists. The Other Form of Life.
The Great Mystery (these are not notes, these are points to discuss)
Believed to have been first EukaryoteMost unicellular, not all. Most diverse kingdomSome protists closer related to other
kingdoms than they are other protists. Six Major groups
Excavata
Excavates – photosynthesizers to pathogens
Giardia – intestinal parasite Euglena – Photosynthetic found in ponds
Chromoalveolata
Chromalveolates – “pigments” , photosynthetic ancestors
Cercozoa, Foraminifera, Radiolaria
Many pseudopods, many have protective shells
Rhodophyta
Red Algae (most are multicellular)
Amoebozoa
Cytoplasmic streaming, pseudopods
Choanozoa
Alone or with a colony, aquatic, close to animals. Trap food and eat it.
22.2 Protists Structure and Function
1. How do Protists move?2. Change in shape
3. Pseodopods 4. “Cytoplasmic Projection”
5. Amoebas4. Powered by actin.
5. Found in musclesAmoeba in action!
2. Specific Organelles3. Cilia
4. Microtubules4. Short, numerous4. Move like oars on a boat4. Known as Ciliates
Cilia is to Crew...Paramecium
3. Flagella4. Microtubules4. Long, one or two4. Spin like propeller or wave
like motion at tip4. Known as Flagellates
Euglena on the Run
2. Passive Movement3. Most protists nonmotile
4. Wind4. Water
1. How do protists reproduce?2. Asexually
3. Cell Division (Mitosis)4. Rapid4. Genetically Identical
3. Releasing Spores4. Sporangium
2. Asexually and Sexually3. First conjugation
4. Sharing genetic material3. Followed by Mitosis
2. Sexual Reproduction3. Alteration of Generation
4. Between Haploid and Diploid
With your partner answer…
1. How should we classify protists?2. What form of movement do you believe is
the most efficient and why?3. What form of reproduction do you think is
the most efficient and why?
