There are two main sub-classifications of Protista:

-Protozoans (Animal-like)

-Algae (Plant-like)

Animal-like Protists

– Ciliaphores (cilia)

– Sarcomastigophores (flagella)

– Protozoas (pseudopodia)-amoebas

– Apicomplexas (no movement)-spores

Protist Locomotion

Ciliated- short cellular appendages that are used strictly for protozoan locomotion

Flagellated- a cellular appendage specialized for movement

Pseudopodia- cellular extensions of protozoan organisms that are used for feeding and movement

Malaria

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium sp., a parasitic protists transmitted from mosquito to humans

Malaria is a widespread disease affecting countries in the southern hemisphere of the world

Symptoms of this disease range from severe chills to extreme fatigue

Approx. 3 million people die from Malaria each year

Sleeping Sickness

Caused by Tsetse flies in Africa

The flies bite and transmit the Trypanosoma sp. of disease-causing protists

These protists can cause anything from a severe headache to comas

Giardiasis

Giardiasis is an illness caused by the parasitic protists Giardia lamblia

This protists is found water sources contaminated by fecal matter

Symptoms of giardiasis are severe diarrhea and intestinal cramps

Hundreds of thousands cases of giardiasis is reported a year
