WhY PRoBIoTICS?

When an imbalance to the gut micro-flora occurs, it is important to re-establish that balance quickly. Probiotics can help re-populate the gut with healthy micro-organisms and help ensure normal GI function is maintained.

Probiotics can have a positive influence through:

• stimulation of a healthy immune system

• a healthy immune system provides a good defense against potential pathogens

• help promote normal defecation and stool quality

Dogs are like people, while some dogs experience occasional gastro-intestinal upset; other dogs have more sensitive guts and are prone to loose stool and other challenges because of a disturbance to the natural gut flora.

For all dogs, taking probiotics is beneficial during an imbalance of gut flora, and helps ensure a consistent and effective population of beneficial bacteria in the gut to assist in maintaining normal GI function.

When people think of the gastrointestinal (GI) system, they think of food being processed and digested; however, the GI system plays a much greater role in helping to maintain overall health for both people and animals. An unbalanced GI tract can impact health in many ways. For this reason, promoting optimum GI health in dogs is vital to supporting their overall health.

When it comes to the balance of GI health, gut microbes play a crucial role. Molecular studies have revealed that the microbial load in the intestine is estimated to range between 1012 to 1014 organisms, about 10X the number of host cells!

However, a microbial imbalance can also be the cause of health concerns. The most common causes of microbial imbalance in dogs are:

• Stress • The use of antibiotics • A challenged immune system• Diet or dietary indiscretions

When this happens, the gut flora can become unbalanced and provide the bad organisms an opportunity to proliferate in the GI tract. This leaves fewer good micro-organisms to carry out the normal functions that benefit the dog. Eventually, the bad organisms take hold, most often leading to loose stool, lowered immune resistance and a general sense of “not feeling well”, until the balance is effectively restored.

To tackle the underlying cause, not just the symptoms, it is important to help restore the vital microbial balance in your dog’s gut. This can be done with the help of probiotics.

PRoTEGRITY™ GI is a clinical-strength gastrointestinal (GI) health supplement, expertly formulated and tested in numerous clinical studies, that promotes a balanced GI system for overall health and well-being in dogs.

hIGh QUALITY InGREDIEnTSKemin sources superior ingredients that have been tested for safety and quality.

• Protegrity GI’s leading ingredient is Kemin’s proprietary Bacillus subtilis strain PB6, a probiotic that has been time tested and utilized across multiple species for over a decade.

• Encapsulated Lactobacillus casei, Enterococcus faecium, and Bifidobacterium bifidum are widely studied commensal bacteria and were selected to help repopulate the gut with good bacteria. The prebiotic (FOS) was selected for its efficacy by serving as a fuel for the beneficial GI bacteria.

• Research shows brewer's yeast supports red blood cells which carry oxygen to tissues and organs that support a healthy immune system.

• Kemin’s organic zinc propionate is highly available and has also been shown to promote immune responses in dogs as well as provide additional beneficial properties.

• Selenium works as an antioxidant and powerful free radical scavenger.

BACIllus suBtIlIs PB6 • Natural, non-GMO proprietary probiotic strain

STABILITY

Below are growth curves of PB6, B. subtilis ATCC633, B. clausii and a negative control. The rapid growth of PB6 provides a consistent response to promote a positive balance and restore microbial balance in the gut.

Loss of potency means loss of benefits. PB6 is very stable. The viability of PB6 does not decline over a period of 2 years, even at elevated temperatures like 50°C (122F) as shown in the study below. Most other probiotics need to be refrigerated and quickly decline over time.

The assay used in the lab to demonstrate positive and negative interaction is known as a counter streak assay, and shows areas of growth or no growth when PB6 exists synergistically with other bacteria.

PB6 is active during administration as evidenced by measuring recovery in canine fecal samples. The graph below shows that PB6 administration began at day 0 and stopped at day 83. The data demonstrates that PB6 was able to survive throughout the canine GI tract and that it does not remain in the animal for excessive periods after administration stops.

Disruption of cell wall and loss of cytoplasmic contents into the exterior after 1 hour of PB6 addition followed by rupture and death of cell after 4 hours.

SAFETYKemin has generated extensive data to show that our patented PB6 is safe. • Molecular tests showed no toxin production by PB6 • Cell culture studies confirmed no cytotoxic effects. • Animal models demonstrated no toxic effects.

• PB6 does not move across the intestinal wall and does not have the ability to create antibiotic resistance

RESULTSPB6 has been studied extensively in various research laboratories and in animal field studies. The laboratory work specifically looked at the properties and characteristics of PB6 in various physical & microbial environments. The findings include: the identification of beneficial peptides produced by PB6, the ability to survive various pH ranges (stomach acids, bile salts), and the interaction with other bacterial species.

PB6 was also tested in a widely accepted rat model for the study of the colon. The rats were separated into 3 groups. Colons from the PB6 (1.5E8 cfu/kg) group were very similar to the saline control and not the negative control.
