Cooling towers are hostile environments... so hostile that standard motors cannot survive them for very long.

Cooling tower motors are specially designed and sealed to protect them against the high temperatures and humidity common in these environments.

But while these motors are protected against external threats, many are still susceptible to internal threats.

To match cooling tower capacity to changing loads, many cooling tower motors are now controlled by variable frequency drives (VFDs or inverters). And although VFDs provide exceptional control of motor speed and generate significant energy savings, they also induce damaging voltages on the shafts of the motors they control... voltages that discharge through bearings, destroying them in as little as 3 months!

To be truly equipped to survive cooling tower duty, these motors need protection against VFD induced bearing damage as well environmental conditions. Fortunately, a growing number of motor manufacturers now offer cooling tower motors with AEGIS® Bearing Protection Rings factory installed inside the motor. In addition to protecting the motor from VFD-induced bearing damage, internal installation protects the AEGIS® Ring from the extreme temperatures and humidity prevailing in cooling towers.

Marathon TEAO Cooling Tower Motors with BCP (Bearing Current Protection) are specially designed for VFD-operation in severe cooling tower environments. They are available off-the-shelf in 3 - 250 HP ratings with AEGIS® Bearing Protection Rings installed internally. These IP 56-rated motors have all cast iron construction and Class F insulation, meet or exceed NEMA premium efficiencies, and come with sealed bearings and T-drains in both end shields for effective drainage. LEESON® also offers a line of off-the-shelf cooling tower motors with AEGIS® Rings factory installed. These TEAO motors have full protection from harsh environments and feature cast iron construction with severe-duty treatment of all internal parts. Designed for shaft up mounting, they are available in 10:1 constant and variable torque models from 3 - 250 HP. LEESON® cooling tower motors are made in the USA and come with a 2-year warranty.

All of these motors are ideal for a full range of cooling tower applications including fans, blowers, and pumps and can be used in packaged and field-erected systems. Their air-over design makes them well-suited to applications involving small, tight spaces.

So don’t use just any motor in cooling towers. Insist on motors that are designed and built to survive these brutal environments. And make sure they are equipped with AEGIS® Bearing Protection Rings!
