Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention | 2011 Annual Report

With increased dental visits annually, as well as more international travel and a growing need for access to care, there is a real risk of disease transmission from patient to care provider, from care provider to patient and from patient to patient. Recent reports of actual and potential cross contamination in dental healthcare settings suggest that the risk of disease transmission is universal. There is no region of the world that could not benefit from improvements in infection prevention and safety education, research, policy develop-ment or service.

Since its inception in 1984, OSAP has focused on advocacy and education to help ensure the safe delivery of oral healthcare. As a result of the unique cooperation between mem-ber academics, policy makers, scientists, consultants, clinicians as well as manufacturers and distributors, OSAP integrates cutting-edge information and educational resources to an increasing number of partners throughout the dental profession.

OSAP is an international organization based in the Washington DC metropolitan area. While small in size, it seeks to leverage its resources to create real and sustained impact on dental safety. The OSAP Board encourages all within oral healthcare to learn more about the organization, and to engage through membership, by participating in a program, or simply by visiting the content rich website.

Because safety matters.

Key Accomplishments

AN IMPORTANT MISSION

The Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that advocates for the safe and infection-free delivery of oral healthcare.

OSAP provides guidance, training and resources to help ensure safe care and identifies and fosters new leaders for this critical function.

2

OSAP worked with TakePart.com to position the movie “Contagion” as a teachable moment for the oral healthcare community.

OUTREACH

• Established and filled new position – Director of Research & Scientific Affairs with Charles Palenik MS PhD MBA. This has allowed OSAP to increase its advocacy by:

– Contributing to a scientific review of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) new hepatitis guidelines

– Contributing dental input and supporting a Call to Action for sharps safety via a Consensus Statement through the International Healthcare Worker Safety Center

– Working on an educational initiative to support influenza vaccinations for dental healthcare workers

– Joining the American Dental Association and other organizations in signing a Letter to Congress urging recognition of health, education, job training, children’s and social services programs as priorities that would be protected from further budget cuts

• Signed on as a supporting member of the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives—a national campaign to provide education and awareness to parents and caregiv-ers on how they can best take control of their children’s oral health through disease prevention. The campaign’s ultimate goal will be to improve children’s oral health so that they can develop into healthy adults.

• Completed a successful project with the Association of State & Territorial Dental Direc-tors (ASTDD) to enhance efforts to incorporate infection prevention and control, and patient and staff safety into state oral health program infrastructure. This project can be used as a template for OSAP to integrate its infection prevention expertise into other organizations.

• Delivered lectures at national meetings of American Dental Assistants Association/Ameri-can Dental Association (Jackie Dorst RDH) and Hispanic Dental Association (Eve Cuny MS); and internationally, at the International Dental Federation (FDI) in Mexico City (Enrique Acosta Gio DDS PhD, Dra. Carmen Carrington-Betts and Eve Cuny MS)

• Conducted compliance contests at the OSAP exhibit booth at two national meetings: RDH Under One Roof and the American Association of Dental Boards
