Pedestrian Access

Where would we like to see mid-block pedestrian crossings?

Val Verde, Patton, and Valdora have all been identified as good locations for pedestrian crossings.

Why can’t we have a signalized pedestrian crossing at every block?

A major reason for the project is to improve traffic flow within the corridor. Adding a signalized pedestrian crossing at every block would drastically impede the flow of traffic.

What about a grade separated crossing or a catwalk?

These types of crossings are very costly, and may not be widely used. Furthermore, their height and bulk add to visual clutter that may not be consistent with the character of the area.

What will happen to the existing phone poles when the new sidewalks are constructed?

They will be relocated, so as to no encroach into the minimum dimension of unobstructed space, required by the American’s with Disabilities Act.

Will Valdora have a signalized school crossing? Yes.

How wide are the sidewalks? You said 6-foot sidewalks. In Phase 1 there are 7-foot sidewalks.

Four feet with vegetation. The Phase 2 project has different constraints in some locations. The intersection improvements at Valdora, Blake, and Barcelona will be wider and right-of-way will be required that must be purchased with public funds. However, the sidewalk will be constructed to meet or exceed Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and Bernalillo County sidewalk standards.

Landscape Questions

How wide will the street side planters be? Typically they will be three-feet wide.

What about site lines? Will the trees cause accidents?

Landscaping will be located to help keep site lines clear. We have pulled the trees back so they don’t cause accidents.

Could shade structures be provided? The possibility of providing shade structures will be explored.

What kind of Landscaping will be provided?

Landscaping will consist of trees and ornamental grasses that won’t tear up the sidewalks. We want to provide color throughout the seasons, so we are looking at trees that give spring color, summer shade and fall color.

Will the landscaping grow and stay alive? Normally there is no worse place to plant a tree than along the roadway because of the fumes, and the narrow space for the roots to try and spread. But, if we plant grasses at the base of trees, it actually helps the tree to thrive. We can also install bubbler irrigation systems that improves the growth.
