  • Protect kids. Protect families.

Fix our chemical safety system now.

With hundreds of toxic chemicals in everyday use, and thousands more untested, we cant

afford to wait. Its time to pass bipartisan reform of the Toxic Substances Control Act.

Untested and Unsafe Chemicals Threaten our Health

The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) is nearly 40 years old and fails to protect Americans

from dangerous chemicals. While most Americans assume that the chemicals they encounter

every day are safe, the current law provides no such assurance. Scientists increasingly tie some

of the chemicals in common use in American homes to health problems such as infertility, pre-

term births, developmental disabilities, Parkinsons, and certain cancers.

America desperately needs a new law that requires safety evaluations of all new and existing

chemicals, modernizes testing methods, gives EPA stronger testing authority, and removes the

barriers that have prevented EPA from regulating known dangers like asbestos. It should also

explicitly require protections for the most vulnerable among us, including children, pregnant

women, the elderly, and workers. And it must provide greater access to chemical information

by state governments, health and environmental professionals and the public.

Fix TSCA: Time to Take Up the Lautenberg Act

The Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act (S. 697), sponsored by

Senators Tom Udall and David Vitter is bipartisan legislation to update this ineffective law, and

it is ready to move to the Senate floor. In April, the Environment and Public Works Committee

reported out the Lautenberg Act by a bipartisan vote of 15-5, and to date more than 40

Senators (20 Democrats and 21 Republicans) have cosponsored this legislation. EPA

Administrator Gina McCarthy has affirmed that this legislation meets EPAs principles for TSCA

reform. The House has passed its own bipartisan TSCA reform legislation.

Please make the most of this historic opportunity and help the Senate to pass strong chemical

    safety reform legislation this summer.
