What adifference twodecadesor so canmake!Established in 1995 as the first private sectorcollege in Oman, and initially known as the College of Administrative Sciences, Majan University College has developed rapidly to become one of the most trusted higher education institutions in theSultanate. As the twenty-first century began,the college had little more than one thousand students and was only just beginning to produce itsfirstgraduatesfromasingledegreeprogramme.Yet today, it has 3500 students, delivers eightundergraduate degrees and can also offer threemaster’s degrees. Indeed in December 2017 itbecame the first higher education institution toreceive full accreditation from the Oman Academic AccreditationAuthority (OAAA) – anachievementthat illustrates the prominence of Majan College in the higher education sector.Majan College is an accredited college of the University of Bedfordshire, UK. Under theagreement between the two institutions, Majan has the freedom to design, develop, review and update the curriculum for its undergraduate programmes. Meanwhile, all the curricula, assessments and teaching are subject to rigorous quality assurance measures, ultimately overseen bytheUniversityofBedfordshire,whichalsoissuesthe academic certificates. Currently, the Collegeoffers undergraduate programmes in Business

Administration (with seven pathways: General, Human Resource Management, InformationSystems, Tourism, Small Business, MarketingandAccounting);Finance;Accounting;Marketing;Computer Applications; Networking Computing (with three pathways), Oil & Gas, Software Engineering and Banking Information Systems)andEnglish Language.All theseEnglish-mediumdegree programmes are delivered in both full-time and part-timemode, providing an excellentopportunity for all potential students to enrol, and theyarevalidatedbytheUniversityofBedfordshire.Majan College graduates emerge from their chosen programmeofstudywithnotonlysubject-specificknowledge and skills, but also generic attributes such as entrepreneurial awareness, critical thinking skills, digital literacy, and good communication skills in English as well as the mother tongue. This stands them in good stead in the world of work.The College is a registered GOLD status tuitionprovider for the examinations conducted by the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants(ACCA), UK. Graduates from the BA (Hons)Accounting receive exemption for up to eight papers out of fourteen papers on the ACCA programme, whilethosefromBA(Hons)BusinessAdministration(Accounting pathway) may receive exemption for up to six papers. In addition the College interacts with, and supports, the local community through

a variety of cultural and environmental activities. It alsooffersawiderangeoftrainingandconsultingservices through its Majan Training Unit.In addition to the suite of undergraduate degrees, the College offers three Master’s degrees: MBA;Master of Computer Sciences (M.Sc.); and International Human Resources Management(MA-IHRM). The fourth Master programme inApplied linguistics will be on offer from February2019. These are delivered through a blendedlearningapproach,withUniversityofBedfordshireacademic staff taking the lead during periods offace to face delivery, normally at weekends, when students are free. The College is perhaps particularly renowned for its achievements in making intelligent use of educational technology, which is a key strategic priority. MOVE, Majan’s virtual learning environment, is highly customised and is used extensively. Moodle, the internationally renowned provider of the underlying software, featured MOVE as a case studyontheirwebsitein2018.Majanalsomakespioneering use of Turnitin, which is used for the submission of all student assignments, checking them for similarity against other sources to ensure nobody in unfairly advantaged through cheating. It also provides a standard interface for staff togive detailed and clear feedback to each student electronically.In2015theCollegehostedTurnitin’sAcademic IntegrityWorkshop, the firstone tobeheldinOman.Evenmorerecently,in2018,Majanlaunched the Chromelab, a state of the art learning spacewith flexible furnitureand40 touchscreenChromebooks.Thislabisthefirstofitskindinhighereducationintheregion,andspecificallypromotes

hands-onlearningopportunitiesandcollaborationin the classroom. Majan College is determined to continueleadingthewayintechnology-enhancedlearning.The College is currently in the final stages ofconstructing a six-storey, multi-million Rialbuilding. This new facility will provide an expanded and improved canteen, a 300 seater auditoriumwith the latest audio visual facilities, and multiple classrooms, labsandoffices.Aflexiblespacewillbe left unused so as to allow for easy expansion in the years to come. Majan’s new building is a symboloftheCollege’sperpetualeffortstoreadyitself for the future, providing space, facilities and technology suitable for the next generation of learners.Majan is also making great strides in building up its profile as a centre for research, particularlyin the area of entrepreneurship, a field ofparticular importance here in the Sultanate. A two-day international conference (“PromotingEntrepreneurship and Technological Skills: National Needs, Global Trends”) was organised by the Collegeinmid-March2018.In addition to its accreditation by OAAA, the College has also won recent accolades from many other bodies, such as first place in AIWA Awards forBestPerformingCompanies(2016)andTopBrandinPrivateHigherEducation inOman (AlOmaniyaAdvertising&PublicRelations,2017). In fact, theCollege continues on the pathway to excellence, continually striving to expand its programmes and facilities in order to meet the needs of prospective students and the Sultanate’s growing economy.

Admission & RegistryDepartment

The Mission of the Admission & RegistryDepartment is “to provide effective andefficientsupport to theCollege inachieving itsobjectives”.

The Admission OfficeDeals with the admissions of new students and ensures that the College’s admissions policies and criteria are met.

The Registry Office

• Responsible for a wide range of supportservices in the field of student andacademic administration. The main areas of responsibility are: student admissions and student records, timetables, conduct of examinations and report generation for internal and external stakeholders.

• Thecentral repository forall formal recordsof students and programmes. This involves effective internal liaison and coordinationwithallacademicFacultiesanddepartmentssuchasFinanceandStudentServices.

How to ApplyApplications can be made to the RegistryDepartment within the College at any stage

throughout the year. Candidates are invited to visittheAdmission&RegistryDepartmentwherethe Admissions Officers/Advisors are availableto assist and advise on suitable courses.

The College’s usual start dates for undergraduate programmes are in September and Februaryeach year.

APL (Accredited Prior Learning)

This service is for students transferring from other Colleges/Universities. Candidates maybe able to enrol on their chosen programme at level3or4withAPLcredits forprior learning.AccreditedPriorLearning(APL)maybegrantedto students who have gained relevant higher–level qualifications from other institutions.Such credits must be agreed before starting the programme and all credit decisions are subject to formal approval by the University of Bedfordshire. APL credits are not consideredforlevel6.

The College does not consider experience to grant APL credits on the basis of prior workexperience.

HoSteLACCoMModAtion

Majan provides separate male and female student hostel accommodation especially for students who reside out of Muscat. The hostels are located within easy reach of the college. Facilities available in the hostel include leisure and TV rooms, WIFI internet connectivity, study rooms furnished with computers for independent study, janitorial services and resident hostel wardens. Extreme care is taken to ensure students are provided with the necessary amenities to make their stay a comfortable one. The hostels are secure facilities with security guards. Medical services available at the hostel and 24 hour on call transport to emergency services. The wardens take care of the students and make them feel comfortable.

CafeTerIaOpen 7.30am – 7.30pm Sunday – Thursday and on weekendswhen the PGC is open. They serve meals, snacks and drinks throughout the day.

mosQueAvailable for prayers is situated on campus as well as a designated prayerroomforladiesinAlNadhablock.Breaksforprayertimesare given during evening lectures.

These labs are supported by a team of professional IT engineers who are also on hand to support youwithITissues.Theirofficeislocatedattheback of the library. Labs are available for allMajan students according to availability, and live PC availability data is available on the MyMajan app.ThelibraryandLearningResourceCentrecontainsover100PC’sthatareavailableatalltimes for student use.

MyMajan

MyMajan is a dedicated smartphone app for Majan students. MyMajan gives students access to all their essential information from their pockets. Students can find out theirgrades, download their transcript, and see their timetable, attendance record and library loans, as well as accessing all their MOVE resources straight from their phones.

Majanoffersstudentsaccesstomultipleonlineresource subscriptions, including some of the latest research papers and hundreds of thousands of quality ebooks. Accompanying these resources is a powerful search engine that helps students to find easily the exactinformation they need.

Library portal

Majan’s library portal makes the entire library catalogue searchable from an easy to use online interface. From the same page students canrenew their loans and put a hold on books they wish to reserve. The library portal is available anywhere with an internet connection, and through MyMajan.

MOVE

MOVE is the focal point of all learning at Majan. It has a page for each module the students are enrolled on, complete with resources, lecture notes, quizzes, discussion forums and assignment submission links. MOVE also allows you to communicate easily with your lecturers and classmates through its built-inmessagingfeature.

Majan University College launched the ChromelabonMarch2018afterayear’sworthof research and planning. The Chromelab was designed from the ground up with flexibilityin mind. The innovative and colourful lab features furniture specially selected to facilitate Chromebook use, The lab is equipped with a 40 x 360° flip screen Chromebooks a GoogleChromecast, whiteboards and a projector screen. Through using Chromebooks students develop skills in collaboration, communication, research, problem solving, creativity, inference and critical thinking. The Chromelab is a hands-onactionclassroomwhere ‘learningbydoing’ takes precedence. The lab is designed to facilitate a student experience in which digital and traditional classroom learning are mixed, and where students are exposed to both experiential learning using technology and presenting their concepts verbally. The mobility of the furniture means that the lab is multi-functional.Forexample,itcanhostgroupdiscussions, debates, in-class tests, staffdevelopment sessions and a variety of other dynamic classroom activities.

Arabic Language and Society

This module is designed for native Arabic speaking students. It aims to develop students’ written and oral proficiency in Arabic. Thismodule will help students acquaint with the characteristics of contemporary Omani /Arabcultureandcivilization,andH.MSultanQaboos’reign and vision for Oman. The syllabus and assessments are designed to understand the grammatical structures of Arabic and use them appropriately and communicate effectively inwriting.

Fundamentals of ICT

This module aims to equip students with fundamentals of information technology and focuses on understanding of common IT applications in day-to-day life. On completion of this module, students will be able to use of prevalent applications to produce documents, spreadsheets and presentations with collaborative features.

Fundamentals of Business Management

In the current economic scenario, which is both dynamic and unpredictable, students need to acquire the fundamental knowledge of an enterprise that will contribute towards employability as well as develop skills for self-employment. This module aims toprovide basic knowledge and skills of an enterprise that contribute towards one’s selection of employment opportunities.

Fundamentals of Personal Development

The module aims to support student’s development of personal values and transferable skills for career development. The activities and assessments of this modules, will enable students identify personal strengths and areas for improvement and work towards acquiring transferrable skills. They will also beguided forplanningcareerdevelopment and job-seeking skills in relation to employers’ needs.

Logical and Problem Solving Skills

This modules is designed to acquaint students with various problem solving and decision making techniques. Through this module students will understand logic and follow systematic approach in expressing arguments and inferences with proper reasoning. On completion they can demonstrate decision-makingandcreative thinking forsolving thegiven problem using various techniques.

Omani Culture & Civilization

This module is designed for Non-Arabic speakingstudents. It aims to introduce students to the main characteristicsofcontemporaryOmani/Arabculture

and civilization. It also sheds light on the values of Arab communities and the need to uphold and adhere to these values. It includesthereignofH.MSultanQaboosand his vision for Oman. The module also aims to create awareness of Omani culture and teaches to appreciate and respectdifferencesincultures.

Professional Communication Skills in English (PCSE)

This module aims to consolidate and extend English language proficiencyand communication skills (particularly listening and speaking) in workplace and professional settings. Students will be taught to communicate effectivelyin a multi-cultural environment bydemonstrating effective listening,speaking and interpersonal skills in workplace/professionalcontexts.

The programme provides a blend of a conceptual theoretical framework of accounting with practical applications through more specialised accounting requirements. Programme OverviewThe importance of entrepreneurship and Small and Medium Enterprises has been widely accepted as vital for economic growth and employment generation. The role of higher education in the creation of graduate entrepreneurs is significant.Hence, there is a need for designing a deliberateeducational strategy to encourage entrepreneurship among students in particular and society in general.

Entrepreneurs have a set of personal skills, attributes and behaviour that go beyond the purely commercial. The BA (Hons) in BusinessAdministration with Small Business pathwaydevelops the skills that are necessary to meet the demands for setting up and managing individual businesses. The aim of this module is to develop the necessary language skills a business graduate would require for effective performance at theworkplace or in pursuit of higher education. This module aims to develop an understanding of Accounting Information Systems and its functions. To develop students’ ability to use accounting software. Specifically it enables students todemonstrate knowledge of importance and components of a good Accounting Information System and develop students’ ability to create spreadsheetsinthefieldofAccounting.

IT Applications for Business

This module focuses on IT Applications, which provide the fundamental, intermediate and advanced Microsoft Excel competencies to equip Business students with the skills necessary toobtainausercertification.Inaddition,thestudentswill be introduced to databases and to the fundamentalsofMicrosoftAccess. It specificallyaims to help students realize that computers are no longer merely tools, but increasingly becoming the means by which we acquire information. Enable students to analyse, synthesize, evaluate and use application software to complete information-processing tasks efficiently andeffectively.

Introduction to Programming

It serves as an entry level programming module, and aims to introduce the skills required to write simple structuredprograms in a high-levellanguage and assess these skills in practical

situations. This module covers the principles of problemsolvingusingalgorithms/flowchartsandthe implementation of this algorithm/flowchartusing a programming language. Academic Writing in English

This module is about different aspects ofacademic writing in English. The main goal is to develop students’ skills in academic composition. It considers sentence construction, academic appropriateness of lexis and style, coherence and cohesion. The module discusses the structure of a paragraph and an essay, and ways of presenting the main idea and supporting it with supplementary details. There are classes on summarizing and paraphrasing, note taking and outlining.

Level 5

Critical Reading and Writing in English

This module seeks to equip students with higher order critical thinking skills that enable them to question assumptions that lie behind written texts. It also aims to develop analytical thinking skills. The module encourages students to interpret textsindependentlyandreflectinamaturemanneron theories and ideologies that underlie academic texts that represent complex schools of thought. History of the English Language and Literature

In this module, the students learn about how the English language as we know it today came into being. While the focus of the module is on the language itself (grammar, phonology, spelling and so on) course content also touches on historical context in relation to England. It takes many of its textual examples from the writings of great literary figures such as Chaucer, ShakespeareandAlexanderPope.By theendof thecourse,students acquire a good general awareness of the stages through which the English language and literature passed and they are able to describe some of the forces which shaped English.

English Syntax

Thismoduleprovidesstudentswithasoundall-round awareness of the syntactic structures of English. It enables them to describe structures using treediagramsand/orappropriate labeling.It builds awareness of the inter-relationshipsbetween syntax, lexis, semantics and discourse. Students learn how to make generalizations across different grammatical categories. Themodule develops the idea that the behind apparent differencesthatexistbetweencategoriesofnoun,verb, adjective, adverb and preposition there are

deep level universal similarities that enable a child learner to process the structures of a language.

Corpus-based English Study

Corpus–based English Study is a module thatintroduces students to the discipline of corpus linguistics. The module considers the birth of the discipline and controversies surrounding its value. Itseekstoraiseawarenessofthedifferenttypesof corpora in use, and considers how corpus data are studied, interpreted and used today. Through studying the module, students will not only deepen their understanding of lexico-grammar,register variety and semantics, but also develop theirinquiryskillsbymeansofhands-onanalyses.By accessing publicly available corpora, theywill learn to navigate various corpora to answer questions of linguistic interest.

Fiction in English

This module teaches the finer nuances ofthe language as expressed in some of the representative fiction published in English.The emphasis of this module is on the critical analysis of various texts to enhance the level of comprehension, application, analysis and relevance. Semantics & Pragmatics

This module introduces students to basic semantic notions such as semantic features, semantic roles and lexico-semantic relations. With an overallawareness of pragmatic theories such as speech act theory, conversational implicatures, the co-operation principle and the politeness principle, this module teaches students how to analyze the discourse structure of a text in terms of larger and smaller units of meaning and their functions within the whole text.

English Research Methods

This module orients students to various research methods and techniques in the area of language and applied linguistics. It seeks to enable students to choose the appropriate research methodsfortheirfinalprojectanditseekstohelpthem manage the research process required in a range of assignments. It attempts to develop essential skills in research writing in the area of AppliedLinguistics.Itcoversapproachestodoingresearch in Language and Applied Linguistics,as well as types and methods of research, e.g., qualitative, quantitative, grounded research, etc. In particular, it covers methods of data collection, and issues in data description, analysis and interpretation.

Entrepreneurship and Professional Development in English (EPDE)

This module aims to develop students’ abilities to identify new opportunities, and transform them into feasible business propositions with the help of business planning. It also seeks to develop students’ abilities to think strategically and take a longer-term view of the overall business, itsposition within the market and the particular constraints facing small businesses. It addresses students’ needs for personal and professional development and skills enhancement. It also consolidates students’ English language skills required for effective communication and theirprofessional development.

Level 6

Project

This module involves one-on-one sessionswith students to select, manage and execute a programme of investigation in an area of study of their own choice. It promotes the students’ ability to conduct subsequent research and write up. The aim of the project module is to deepen students’ learning through executing a detailed and comprehensive study of a particular subject. It enhances students’ confidence andemployability skills in carrying out a successful project work, thus demonstrating a range of personal transferable skills.

Theories of Language Learning

This module seeks to enhance students’ understanding of psycholinguistic perspectives on language acquisition, comprehension and production. Through discussion and analysis of various theoretical issues, students are exposed to the latest research trends and directions in the area of language learning and development. Students are taught a range of methods which can be used to investigate the language learning process. Students learn more about the biological foundations of language and evaluate research and research methodologies in the field ofpsycholinguistics.

Poetry in English

Through the study of various English poems, this module seeks to help students to engage in mature critical analyses of poetry in terms of theme, language and rhythmic structure. It also allows them to identify and explain cultural and cross-cultural nuances evident in the poemsstudied. Students are encouraged to relate stylistic choices to authorial intention/effects onthe reader. A goal of the module is for students to gain a sound understanding of the relevant theories, concepts and frameworks of poetry, and develop skills of analysis, evaluation and synthesis.

Spoken Discourse

This module introduces students to the various theoretical approaches to discourse analysis, analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. It seeks to provide students with the necessary skills to apply descriptive frameworks to both monologue and dialogue. It also seeks to deepen students’ awareness of the importance of cohesive devices in discourse and offers anunderstanding of the underlying structure of discourse.

Drama in English

This module encourages students to compare and evaluate the styles of different dramatistsandexplores thepossibleeffectson the reader/theatre audience. It seeks to equip students with the skills to critically analyse the plays and relate them to life. The module seeks to equip students with a sound understanding of the relevant theories, concepts and frameworks needed by students, and works on developing skills of analysis, evaluation and synthesis. Students are encouraged to develop reasoning skills as they engage in critical appreciation of action, characterization, dialogue and plot.

Written Discourse

Written Discourse is a module that aims to deepen students’ understanding of why written texts are as they are, and to develop their skills in analyzing texts. Students are exposed to a variety of genre and text types, and consider various ways in which texts can be analyzed. They are encouraged to consider social purpose and reader expectations in their interpretation of texts. In addition, students develop hands-on skills inanalyzing texts frommacro-andmicro-linguisticperspectives, and consider how patterns of lexical, grammatical and rhetorical cohesion interact to create the textuality of text.

Second and Foreign Language Acquisition

The main focus of this module is to consider how languages are learned by second language and foreign language learners. In order to gain a fuller appreciation of how the learning of a second language takes place the module introduces the student to the major hypotheses, theories and principles that have over the years shaped this discipline. Students are encouraged to critically reflectonthese,andexplainthereasonsfortheirown viewpoints.
