Montessori Teacher Training
Montessori education is an educational approach developed by Italian physician and educator.Dr. Maria Montessori. It is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborativework. In Montessori classrooms children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the learning process. Children work in groups and individually to discover and explore knowledge of the world and to develop their maximum potential. It nurtures each child’s individual strengths and interests.
Montessori education encourages children to explore their world, and to understand and respect the life forms, systems and forces of which it consists. Montessori classrooms are beautifully crafted environments designed to meet the needs of children in a specific age range. Dr. Maria Montessori discovered that experiential learning in this type of classroom led to a deeper understanding of language, mathematics, science, music, social interactions

and much more. Now Montessori method is spread in 220 nations. A well trained teacher in Montessori Method will be able to provide real child centered, activity oriented and life centered education to the children. In Kerala there are around four lakh children going to any kind of pre-school – nursery, anganvadi, kindergarten or Montessori school every year. Such schools may be workingindependently or attached to schools with grade classes. So there is a need of around twenty thousand well trained pre-school teachers. There is a trend in the new generation parents to send their children to English medium kindergarten schools or Montessori schools. But the trained teachers are very less. As the PPTTC students are trained in Malayalam medium they are not preferred in English medium schools.
So the English medium schools are searching for appropriately trained nursery/KG/ Kindergarten teachers with good communication skills. Government schools and aided are also running pre-school classes supported by the PTA. Many of them prefer Montessori trained teachers.Even though there are several private organizations conducting pre-school teacher training certificate courses, the prospective teachers coming out from those institutions are seems to be less skilled in handling children in an internationally approved child education methods. If the SRC Community College can organize a well-planned course with an internationally accepted curriculum it will be a chance for thousands of educated and unemployed women. The trained women can run their own child care centers/ Montessori schools.
