• India used to dominate world hockey for decades and wishes to have this position back as it still is India’s national sport.

• Hockey is the national game of India like the tiger is the national animal.Protect the tiger and hockey in India from disappearing!

• In 2018 the World Cup Hockey will take place in India. A perfect horizon, target and opportunity to turn around the trend!

• The Netherlands is strong in grassroots sports, school sports and building good sport infrastructures. Therefore the Dutch and Indian governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding in which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Netherlands offers support in sports development at grassroots level in India.

CONSIDERATIONS• In India there is space to improve and further develop efficient structures, sufficient accommodations and up-to-date coach-the-coach education at local/regional grassroots level supporting an increase in the number of children playing hockey.

• Former Olympic and world champion hockey Floris Jan Bovelander and Hockey India investigated the status of grassroots hockey in India and jointly developed a range of activities to multiply the number of young hockey players, girls and boys, in a few years’ time.

• This initiative is called One Million Hockey Legs. It is ambitious, but thanks to a number of companies and institutions who already committed and with your support, we are convinced that the goals will be achieved.

Mission & objectives

Objectives• To further increase the amount of hockey players and hockey fans;• To increase the popularity of hockey as a recreational activity and a social sport that is enjoyable to all groups;• To further increase the level of coaching;• Building stronger communities via regular sport programs;• Develop relationships with schools, universities, local federations and governments to carry out activities to further propagate hockey;• Facilitating Dutch companies in their new or further business development in India and vice versa;• Facilitating Indian companies in their marketing and business development.

The ultimate goal is to have, at the occasion of the 2018 World Cup hockey in India, one million hockey legs (500.000 girls, boys, men, women, veterans) participating to the ‘One Million Hockey Legs Festival’. This will be a one month event prior to the World Cup 2018, when hockey will be played all over India, in tournaments at schools, universities or local community parks. This festival will be an example to the world of the increasing power of India, not only economically but also in sports. All activities in the period 2015-2018 will contribute to the popularity of hockey in India aiming to increase participation in any sport at every level of the society and at the same time to strengthen business links between India and The Netherlands.

Mission Increasing the number of children and adults playing hockey and developing sustained passion for hockey by introducing the game to pre and early teenaged children and simultaneously promoting hockey as a culture and tradition, thereby contributing to develop a sports loving society.

Hockey - and sports in general - is more than just a game, it develops children’s basic skills for life. One Million Hockey Legs is an umbrella for a range of hockey and business related events from 2015 until the 2018 World Cup Hockey in India, aiming to give grassroots hockey an impulse and to further develop the business link between India and The Netherlands.

HOCKEY IN INDIAThe Indian men’s field hockey team is the most successful field hockey team in Olympic history with 8 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals. Field hockey was introduced to India in 1885. In 1928, India won its first Olympic gold medal. From 1928 to 1956, the Indian men’s team remained unbeaten in the Olympics, garnering six gold medals in a row. On 9 March 2008, India lost 2–0 to Britain in Santiago, Chile in the final of one of the three qualifying tournaments for the Beijing Olympics. With only the winner advancing to the games the Indian men’s team was eliminated from the Beijing Olympics competition. This was the first time that the Indian men’s team did not participate in the Olympics since 1928. The introduction of artificial grass caused a change of play favouring the European and Australian style of hockey. India finished in 12th place (last) in the 2012 London Olympics. Since then the national team is on the way up again. In 2014 India won the Asian Games, beating Pakistan in the finales and finished 4th at the Champions Trophy.

The men’s team (world ranked 9th) is already qualified for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics 2016 and the women’s team (world ranked 12th) has a good chance of doing the same during the qualification tournaments in the summer of 2015. The Hockey India League is a professional league for field hockey competition in India. The tournament is unique in the world with franchised-based teams consisting of players from India and around the world competing with each other for this most prestigious cham-pionship attracting top players from all over the world.

Unlike The Netherlands, there is no club competition structure in India. All mat-ches are between company sponsored teams (e.g. Indian Railways, Air India), or at one of the many tournaments all over the country. The majority of children play hockey at school or in a near-by park. Therefore it is unknown how many peo-ple in India really play hockey. Estimates vary from 20.000 to 100.000, the most reliable figure is approximately 50.000.

To be able to assure that in 2018 one million hockey legs will be playing, an advanced registration system is required. Software is under development in which social media, a database and direct communication tools are connected as well as training programs and an event calendar. The communication tools will be used for event announcements / registrations and partner marketing. Social media and the database will be key drivers of the project development and growth of number of players.
