Here at KLC, our students are more than just a name on a register. Founded over thirty years ago by Principal Jenny Gibbs, KLC School of Design has dedicated itself to offering interior design courses which develop the creative potential of every student and prepare them for the industry.

We want to help you understand what it really means to be a designer and we pride ourselves on delivering our training programmes through exciting and innovative methods; intended to spark excitement and to inspire students to reach for excellence.

All of our qualification courses include extensive training on the latest computer aided design programmes, as well as teaching core skills such as traditional hand-drafting; meaning students can effectively and professionally communicate their design ideas in a variety of mediums.

Our tutors are trained educators and practising professionals, with first-hand knowledge of working in the industry – giving students access to a wealth of knowledge both inside and outside the studio environment.

University of BrightonSince 2010, KLC School of Design has had a formal partnership with the University of Brighton. For students who are looking for a different learning experience, the Full Time Foundation Degree takes you out of the classroom and into the heart of the industry. Gone are the days of nodding off in the back row of the lecture theatre – the Foundation Degree course has been intentionally formulated to spark imagination, encourage debate and ignite curiosity! Design theory and skills are imparted through active learning experiences, such as hands-on workshops, group seminars, inspirational visits and debates. This course contains more workshops and 1-2-1 sessions with tutors than a standard university course, providing students with a supportive, creative and motivational atmosphere, intended to help you transform into accomplished and confident designers upon graduation.

Course Leader“I can’t wait to watch the students' faces as they begin to realise the extent of fun we have in store for them – from our fantastic days out, to hands on workshops and hanging out with guest industry designers discussing project development. From a teaching perspective, I’m so excited that we’re pushing design education techniques into the 21st century. Learning should be instinctive, fun and inspiring and I truly believe we’ve designed one of the best courses out there.”

Rachael White Course Leader

With KLC’s new state-of-the-art virtual learning environment, gaining an interior design degree online has now become a reality. Students from all over the UK, and the world, can now take advantage of the industry-recommended design training which KLC offers, without having to move to London! Students are divided into time zone groups for ease of communication and can look forward to regular contact with their tutors. Skills are taught through pre-recorded video lectures, lesson notes are uploaded weekly and each group enjoys a fortnightly live webinar, which brings everyone together for a chat and a debate about design! The online ‘Coffee Shop’ forums also give students a space to collaborate, ask questions and share ideas. Balancing your commitments and your study time has never been so simple, with this flexible, affordable route to a degree.

Course Leader“The beauty of this flexible course is the opportunity it gives students to manage existing work and family commitments, while embarking on a creative journey towards their new career in interior design. What excites me the most is the enjoyment students take from collaborating online: structured, timetabled and inspiring activities, small group sizes and live interaction make the course fun, with peer support and engagement being what students themselves say is best about this course. After all, online learning and teaching is the future of education and KLC’s Online Foundation Degree is leading the way!”

“I am so pleased I chose KLC over some of the other courses. Despite being

online it is really fantastic to have so much interaction and it feels like we are

all being pushed creatively.”

Kerry Lyon Student

“I was worried about doing an online degree; that I wouldn’t keep motivated or I’d feel swamped by the information. However the way in which the course is structured is informative but enjoyable,

and the videos and webinars make things feel much more manageable.”

Jess FueryStudent

“The thing that concerned me most about the online course was my

‘expectation’ of feeling isolated and this has definitely not been the case. The

combination of the coffee shop forums, the seminars etc. makes me feel very

much a part of the group. I like the way the portfolios have open access, so as

with a classroom environment you can see your classmates work.”

Favoured by career changers, this rigorous one year course equips students with the array of creative and professional skills needed to gain employment within the design industry. Studying on the Full Time Diploma course gives you unprecedented access to design companies and professionals throughout the year, with regular inspirational guest lecturers, industry panel discussions, lunchtime talks from various design companies and a live group project. Working closely with our unique Careers Service, students are also given the opportunity for integrated work experience during term breaks and plenty of help with finding employment after they graduate. As with all of our full time courses, unrivalled levels of tutor interaction are available; the tutors work with their groups every day in the studios and we keep the student/tutor ratio deliberately low in order to ensure full support throughout.

Course Leader“Getting our students industry ready, so they can hit the ground running, is what it’s all about on the Full Time Diploma course. Obviously I’m biased, but for me and my team of designer-tutors, there’s no substitute for face-to-face learning and teaching. It’s full on, it’ll challenge and inspire you but along the way you’ll make new friends for life and most crucially, have fun!”

Kevin McEwen Course Leader

Experience Life at KLC is a hands-on, interactive workshop; ideal for getting to know what studying at KLC School of Design is really like!

Students will spend the day working on a small product design project, intended to get their creative juices flowing and encourage them to think outside the box. (Have you ever made a table from a flamingo? No?! Believe us, it can be done!)

Throughout the day, you’ll have opportunity to speak with tutors and staff about your choice of course; as well as the Careers Service about employment possibilities, and the Admissions team will be on hand to give more information on interview and enrolment procedures. There’s also a short inspirational trip to a showroom or gallery in the Chelsea Harbour area and a rather tasty buffet lunch!

See first-hand how passionate our tutors are about developing new designers and transforming people’s lives through the power of good design.

If you don’t have a previous degree qualification, or have little experience with writing at a higher education level, that shouldn’t hold you back. It may just mean that you need to take the KLC Preparatory Course before starting your studies with us.

The Preparatory Course is a 30 hour, online course, required for applicants who are enrolling on the Full Time or Blended Learning Diploma without a prior degree in any subject.

Online lectures cover topics such as academic research techniques, lateral thinking, critical analysis, structuring essays and referencing, and students are required to submit a number of written pieces to demonstrate their skills.

Students applying for the BA (Hons) could also be advised to undertake this course, to improve their academic writing skills in preparation for their dissertation.

The KLCPreparatoryCourseWhatever your educational background, we strive to make our interior design courses accessible to all.

Available free to any applicant who is being interviewed for a qualification course.
