Our Vision, Aims and Values

We will achieve our vision by:

• giving the children opportunities to develop spiritually and morally under our over-riding Christian ethos throughout all aspects of school life; in our Collective Worship, our learning, our teaching and our support of the children as they develop and learn the skills of life;

• providing a safe and healthy school environment which sets an example for life choices both in and outside of school;

• respecting every member of the school community, encouraging, valuing and celebrating individual skills and talents;

• encouraging every individual to take responsibility for their learning, personal development and their actions;

• challenging everyone to strive to do their best at all times;

• providing a creative, inspiring and interactive learning environment to challenge and enthuse the children and to make learning fun;

• creating a warm, friendly and trusting atmosphere where we can try new things, knowing we can learn from our mistakes;

• ensuring school finances and resources are used effectively to support children’s learning and teaching commitments;

• collaborating fully within and between all members of the community – pupils, parents, staff, governors, Church members, other schools, the local community and national and international partners – ensuring all contributions are encouraged and valued;

• sharing and embedding our vision and ensuring we are forward looking and flexible to meet the ever-changing needs of our society.

Our vision is for a united Christian community dedicated to challenging and inspiring every child to reach their full potential. We will value every child as an individual, support the development of the whole child, will and encourage educational excellence, to enable them to leave us as model citizens of the future.

Our Community

Our school benefits from our central location and walking distance to many amenities such as the beach and woods. We enjoy strong links with nearby schools and often take part in shared cross curriculum networks. We work closely with different people in our community and have visits from Community Police, RNLI, and our local Veterinary Surgery.

We also offer every child the chance to experience residential and day trips. Recent adventures have included visits to our local fire station, a trek along the Gruffalo trail, interactive visits to @Bristol, and residential breaks to Hill House Christian Centre and the natural environment of Goblin Combe.

Our school have taken part in various community projects over the years. We have decorated our own fibre glass donkey for Children in Need; worked with our local church to help re-design their communal garden and litter picked to keep our beach safe and clean. To help us develop our community spirit, we fund-raise every term for the charity chosen by our School Council.

Our links with Christ Church Church are very important and we have a close working relationship with them.

Acts of Worship are held daily and Reverend Tom takes a service one morning a week. Regular visits are made to Church for special occasions and are enjoyed by both children and adults alike.

Activities, Facilities and Clubs

We offer a wide section of extra – curricular activities, many run free of

charge by our members of staff. Others are offered for a small charge by

outside coaches. Clubs vary depending on the season and year groups, but

regularly include: Badgers, Breakfast Club, Chess Club, Construction Club,

Dance, Film Club, Glee Club, Graphic Design, Guitar Lessons, Music

lessons, Science Club, Sports Club, Swimming and Ukulele Lessons.

We enjoy many more exciting activities during our residential camps and trips such as archery, forest school projects, high wires, canoeing and team building tasks.

A hot meal with a vegetarian option is available daily. Our on-site kitchen produces meals for about 50% of pupils in school and there is always a great choice of food.

Children wishing to bring a packed lunch should ensure the food is packed in a named, sealed container. Drinks in plastic bottles or cartons are permitted. Fizzy or hot drinks are not permissible.

Milk can be purchased for all children direct from The School Milk Service Ltd and fruit can be eaten during the morning break. No sweets, gum, biscuits or chocolate is to be brought into the school as we like to encourage the children to eat healthily.

Teaching and Learning

Children in the FS2 Class follow the new Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. In the other six year groups, our teaching covers all National Curriculum subjects and RE. Each class works on a central theme for the term. We send out a ‘Topic Web’ to inform you of this, each term. Teachers firstly spend time finding out what the children already know and what they would like to find out, and then share the planning with them in the form of a ‘learning journey’. Whenever possible the theme will link subjects together, although there are some areas of these subjects that need to be taught separately, for instance the skills of Numeracy and Literacy. We place great emphasis on the basic skills of these subjects; literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (number work).

Learning at Christ Church is a very active experience. We aim for our chil-dren to become fully immersed in everything they do, and we make full use of ‘real life’ experiences, the community and the world around them.

Our curriculum therefore, will help children in the following ways:

1. to acquire knowledge

2. to acquire skills and practical abilities

3. to appreciate the natural and man-made environment

4. to develop a reasoned set of attitudes, values and beliefs – a sense of self-respect, respect for others and the ability to live and work to-gether with others.

Home Link

Education is a three-way partnership between you, your child and us. If we work together we have much more chance of being successful. It is our aim to be as open and parent friendly as possible. We believe in the important role both parents and carers have to help us ‘Working with Children to achieve high Academic Standards’.

We try to foster this partnership by encouraging parental involvement in school in as many ways as possible, including two-way dialogue via Daily Reading Record Books, invitations to many of our services, Parent Evenings, Workshops and Forums. We also provide extensive resources and curriculum information on our school website.

All our children get homework which is kept to an appropriate level as we feel this helps reinforce what they are learning in class. As research has shown the importance of daily reading, we offer our children access to Bug Club online, which they can access from home.

At Christ Church we also have a Parent and Pupil Support Worker as part

of our staff team. Their role is to give practical support to parents, be a

listening ear if you have concerns, as well as organising workshops and

training opportunities for parents.

Often it may be that parents want to talk about concerns they have about

their child, but support can be offered in many different ways to help you

in your role as parents.

Pupil Well-Being

The staff are very caring and are aware of the characters and personalities of each child.

Our aim is to produce an extended family atmosphere in the school. To this end, if any child has a problem at school or at home we try to recognise this at a very early stage and take appropriate measures to deal with it.

Our “Pupil Voice” is a very important part of our school life. We have many committees and children are encouraged to take responsibility and ownership.

Eco and School Council is made up from elected representatives who attend meetings concerning school and eco events and help decide the direction our school will take.

As part as our schools’ ICT development plan we formed an E Safety committee to monitor these and wider issues when communicating electronically.

It is the role of the committee to investigate E Safety changes, review our school procedures and discuss any ways to improve pupil and adult understanding of this topic. A group of pupils also help us monitor Healthy and Safety standards around the school.

Our older children are given additional responsibilities as trained peer mediators and buddies who work under the direction of our staff at lunch times. It is our overall aim for the children to feel happy, safe and for them to enjoy school.
