PROSPECTUS 201907

WELCOME TO IACWelcome to your new place of learning, which is both exciting and challenging. We believe that today’s education has to prepare you for the times to come. You will learn the values of your past and prepare for the ever-changing future. In the world of tomorrow, science will be inspired by art to further expand the human envelope of knowledge. There will emerge a new culture based on art, in its widest range and meaning. The Institute for Art and Culture is the harbinger of that tomorrow.

Curiosity and Creativity are the two human attributes that have propelled civilization over the last many centuries. We are born with them but the present education system discourages questions and creativity. IAC is dedicated to reverse that. The primary objective of the IAC is to promote Creativity and Curiosity as they challenge the old education of rote learning, which dulls the mind and kills initiative. Through this new pedagogy, combining theory and practice, our students innovate a new world of opportunity. Knowledge based on Curiosity and Creativity opens new doors to the world of tomorrow. Come join us to create an integrated world of arts and science that, together, serve humanity.

FOUNDING PHILOSOPHYThe founding philosophy and ethos of the IAC are drawn from the following realities:

Culture is a set of beliefs and practices that animates, sustains and binds a people, thereby defining identity. Although the past is our bedrock, it must continuously evolve.

The human mind is a conscious set of cognitive faculties that process, reason and perceive in a holistic framework. The integrative process of thinking, wanting and feeling, leads to the creation of objects of beauty, which might or might not be of any formal use. This experiential awareness is the basis of all artistic creations.

Art provides multiplicity of views that enhance self-reflection, communication and visual literacy. This increased sense of empathy, in turn, develops a tolerance towards the ‘other’, the ‘different’ and the ‘outsider’.

Culture impacts the individuals and decision-making processes in a society. It has the potential to bridge our worlds, connect and inspire communities, provide skills for development and essentially advocate change.

IAC believes in integration with community, building long-term industrial linkages and National and International partnerships. By incorporating a tri-lingual approach, which includes English, Urdu and Punjabi, the students recognize culture and art education not as a foreign stimulus but the one they are inherently connected with.

16PROSPECTUS 2019

APPLICATION FORM The application form must be completed on both sides. The space for the ‘statement of intent’ can be filled in any of these three languages, English, Urdu or Punjabi.

The applicants must state the degree for which they are applying. In case they wish to opt for more than one discipline, they must show their priority in the number box against each degree. The completed form must be submitted to the admission office on the campus.

There is a backside of the form, which should also be filled. The statement of intent is a chance for the student to showcase her/his hopes and ambitions and why she/he wants to study the subject of choice.

The students will be given a number slip, which is necessary to sit in the entry tests.

ENTRY TESTS

LANGUAGE TEST

All applicants would be tested in three languages, English, Urdu and Punjabi, both written and oral. The levels in language are defined as

(i) Basic (ii) Good (iii) Excellent

The students are required to study the language courses offered so that they are at ‘Good’ level in all three and at ‘Excellent’ in one. All those already proficient at the desired level in any language would be exempted from taking courses in that language.

DRAWING/APTITUDE TEST

The applicants seeking admission to degrees offered by the School of Art (SOA), School of Digital and Cinematic Art (SDCA) and School of Architecture Design and Urbanism (SADU) will be tested to gauge their ability to observe and express it through drawing.

A test for logical thinking and understanding would also be administered to applicants opting for a degree at SADU, SOA, SCL and SDCA schools.

For admission in a degree offered by the School of Culture and Language (SCL), the applicant is required to write up to 200 words on the back of the application form, explaining what she/he wants to study and why. The student will mention her/his reasons for wanting admission in this course and future ambitions. Instead of the drawing test, they are required to write an essay on the given topic.

The successful candidates will be called for an interview. The school can schedule written tests and interview on the same day. The successful candidates will receive a provisional letter of acceptance from the Registrar’s Office.

FEE STRUCTURE

AVERAGE TUITION COST OF THE FIRST SEMESTER

School of Architecture Design and Urbanism Rs. 144,000.00 School of Digital and Cinematic Art Rs. 144,000.00 School of Culture and Language Rs. 135,000.00 School of Art Rs. 157,000.00

The fee structure at the Institute for Art and Culture is flexible and is based on the cost per course of study. The tuition fee is not a blanket charge per semester or a year; the student only pays for the courses she/he chooses to study. Hence the average cost shown above is just an estimate.

For instance, if a student takes admission in a degree course, she/he will pay the tuition fee for the core courses and the electives. Some courses cost less than the others so she/he can choose, in consultation with the Degree Incharge, what courses she/he can take for a particular summer and only pay for that. The courses can vary from semester to semester depending upon a student’s financial situation. If an applicant wants to take only one course she/he can do so and obtain a certificate for having passed that course. She/he would pay tuition fee for that course alone.

An applicant may also register in consultation with an advisor for a set of courses over two semesters with an independent study to earn a diploma and pay the tuition fee accordingly. Merit/need based scholarships, student loans and work on campus opportunities are also available for the deserving candidates.

At the time of admission, a fee of Rs. 10,000 is charged. Security and other sundry charges may also apply.

2. Empowering the Kalasha Communities through Safeguarding their Intangible Cultural Heritage – August 2016 - April 2017

The purpose of this project was to Safeguard the Kalasha Cultural Heritage, promote cultural diversity, religious plurality, & communal harmony. This research project was carried out under THAAP and Institute for Art & Culture (IAC) in collaboration with UNESCO and was funded by Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, the Embassy of Switzerland.

The Kalasha people are one of the smallest religious minorities of Pakistan, numbering nearly 4200 people. They dwell in the Mumuret, Biriu, and Rukmu valleys (District Chitral, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa). The highly capable faculty of the SCL carried out research and documentation of their cultural practices using Community Based Inventorying (CBI). Frequent complaints and repeated demands of Kalasha community members over cases of past misrepresentation prompted this project. The transmission of the Kalasha heritage relies heavily upon oral traditions, with little to no present documentation carried out in collaboration with community members.

Fieldwork was carried out in the Kalasha Bumburet (Mumuret), Birir (Biriu) , and Rumbur (Rukmu) valleys for a combined period of 87 days and research and dissemination methodology was established to bring forth the insiders perspective of Kalasha culture, which resulted in the formation of the first ever Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Inventory of Pakistan. Submission of “Suri Jagek: The Kalasha Meteorological and Astronomical Practice of Observing the Sun, Moon, Stars, and Shadows” on UNESCO’s list of ICH in Need of Urgent Safeguarding was accepted unanimously, a great success for IAC!

The student’s cumulative grade point average (CGPA) shall be computed by multiplying the number of credit hours of each course by the numeric value assigned to that grade; then dividing the sum of all courses by the total number of credit hours of each course in which the student was enrolled.

In certain cases, the student may receive the following grades which carry no numerical value and shall therefore, not be calculated into semester or cumulative grade point average:

I – incomplete The teacher may award an “I” grade to student who was unable to complete the course during the semester due to any acceptable reasons or any other justifiable unavoidable circumstances. The “I” grade only indicates a deferred grade and shall be changed to a grade other than “I”. The faculty in consultation with the Dean/ Academic Coordinator of the School shall allow the student to complete the assigned work within specified deadline for assessment. Subsequently a letter grade shall be awarded by the teacher. One week after the expiry of the specified deadline for an assessment a failing grade “F” shall be noted on the academic record of the student if the revised grade is not

W – Withdrawn If a student withdraws from a course after two week from the beginning of the semester, She/he shall be awarded a ‘W’ grade. The course shall appear on the transcript, but no credit shall be awarded and the course shall not be included in the grade point average. However, if the course is withdrawn after eight weeks of the commencement of semester, a grade “F” shall be awarded in the course. Pass Some courses may be offered which require Pass/Fail grade only. These courses can only be taken out of elective courses. These shall be non-credited courses. If withdrawn after eight weeks of the commencement of the semester, a grade “F” shall be awarded in the course.

Add/Drop courses A student can add or drop a course provided the option is taken within two weeks of commencement of classes. A student adding a course is responsible for ascertaining the requirements of the course and completing them. Consulting the course supervisor, before adding or dropping a course is advised.

Courses shall be deleted from the record if dropped within two weeks of commencement of classes. However, a grade ‘W’ (Withdrawn) shall appear on the transcript record if applied to drop the course after two weeks of commencement of semester.

If a student drops the course after eight weeks of commencement of semester, an ‘F’ grade shall be mentioned on the transcript.

Repeating a course Two categories of students shall be required to repeat the course . A student awarded grade ‘F’ in mandatory/major course/s shall repeat the course. In case of an elective course, where awarded grade ‘F’, student may repeat the same elective or take a new elective in place of previous one, in order to fulfill the degree requirements. In case of repeating the same elective grade ‘F’ will be substituted with the new grade (for CGPA calculation). In case a student takes a new course in lieu of the course, which she/he failed, both the grades will reflect on his/her transcript. A student shall have the option to repeat a major/mandatory/elective course once if s/he has earned grade C- or less. However, a student shall not be allowed to repeat any course in which the grades earned are higher than C- except with the permission of Dean.

A student may repeat up to 18 semester credit hours during their course of study for the program.

In case a student repeats the course that has already been taken, the old grade will be substituted with the new grade (for CGPA calculation). However, a sign in front of the grade shall indicate that the course has been repeated.

57PROSPECTUS 2019

Attendance A regular 75% attendance of a student shall be mandatory in all classes of his/her academic program. Students who miss a class session will be expected to make up for the missed work on their own, failing which they will receive a failing grade. The acceptance of such work is at the discretion of the course supervisor. Special Consideration includes sickness, misadventure, or other circumstances beyond the control of student that may prevent the student from completing a course requirement or attending or submitting assessable work for a course, or may significantly affect performance in assessable work, e.g. formal end of semester examination /submission, class test, studio presentation etc. All applications for exemption from class attendance must be made in writing to the Dean or Academic Coordinator of the respective school/program. Suitable documentation such as medical certificate may be required if such confirmation is necessary. In case a student misses a midterm or final examination, test, assignment, quiz, presentation etc. the instructor may give a makeup or may refuse to do so. A make up for the midterm or final exam will only be given in case of exams missed due to medical or other extenuating circumstances like death in immediate family (parents, siblings) or serious illness of a student. Absence of the student from the Institute for more than four weeks without submitting an application of leave will result in automatic cancellation of his/her enrollment. A student can permanently withdraw or take leave from the Institute by submitting a withdrawal or leave application. By following this procedure, the student will be entitled to receive an official consolidated transcript of all the semesters attended and refund of the security deposit. No grades for the running semester in which the withdrawal takes place will be recorded in the transcript.

A student who leaves the Institution for any medical reasons shall provide a letter from a medical officer stating when s/he is likely to return to the Institute.

ACADEMIC PROBATION Student who fails to maintain minimum CGPA of 1.5 (or 2.0 in case of master’s degree) in the first two semesters and a CGPA of 2.0 (or 2.5 in case of Master’s degree) in subsequent semesters shall be placed on Academic Probation. If a student who is on academic probation for three (3) consecutive semesters his /her name shall be removed from the Institute rolls.

FAILURE IN MAJOR STUDIO A student who fails in a Major Studio subject in the fall semester, shall be graduated to the next semester of spring. In the spring semester s/he will be required to take all the mandatory and elective courses required at that level during that particular academic semester. S/he will also attend the Major studio of this level. However, in this Major Studio class instead of being promoted to next level s/he will be repeating the project/assignment of the previous level. If the student gets a passing grade in his/her Major Studio during the spring semester, she/he will take the next level of the Major Studio (missed during the spring) in the coming summer semester.

She/he will then be able to rejoin the regular Major Studio and other courses for his/her academic year from the next fall semester.

FINAL AND MID TERM Final and mid-term examinations shall be the only examinations held during the period as announced and notified by the Institute. The final examinations shall be a requirement in all courses except those in which examinations are not used to evaluate a student’s performance.

Each teacher shall provide the students with the criteria on which final grade is to be calculated i.e. weightage of tests, assignments attendance requirements, examinations or any other work which contributes to the final grades.

Make-up examinations for missed Midterm examinations will be administered during the final Examination period and the make – up of the missed final examinations will be administered in the next semester’s Midterm period provided the student fulfills the conditions laid down in clause 11.

RIGHT OF APPEAL Consistent with the Institute regulations, each School shall ensure that the academic performance of a student is evaluated in a fair and impartial manner. The teachers shall be required to exercise their best professional judgment in evaluating the student’s academic performance.

A student can submit a written request for review of course grades to the office of Dean if she/he disagrees with the evaluation of his/her work by the teacher. The request should be filed within three weeks after receipt of the provisional transcript /grade report along with the fee for each course.

The Dean shall arrange for a neutral evaluation of the grades. The Dean shall communicate the decision of the neutral evaluation to the student, faculty member, and Controller of Examination within ten days of receiving of the request for review.

The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. Quizzes 5 % In summative assessment the focus is on determining what the student has learned at the end of a unit of instruction or at the end of a grade level. Summative assessment helps determine the extent to which the instructional and learning goals have been met. The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.

As stated the students shall be assessed under the semester system. In each semester the students shall be required to appear in quizzes, mid semester and final examinations,
