7Selecting your programme of study

Selecting your programme of studyYour success at college relies on being enrolled onto the right courses, and we are committed to doing everything we can to achieve this. With over 30 A Level courses and 14 vocational courses to choose from, we are confident you will find the right combination of courses to meet your future needs.

From September 2016, students on A Level programmes will select 3 A Levels to study over 2 years. Some students will be advised to study an AS Level qualification, BTEC Subsidiary Diploma or Certificate alongside their A Levels.

Students opting for a vocational study programme (such as BTEC or CACHE Diplomas) may also be advised to study an AS Level qualification, BTEC Subsidiary Diploma or Certificate alongside their main programme.

All students are expected to complete work experience and participate in enrichment activities in addition to their timetabled lessons.

We have a small but comprehensive range of courses for students studying at Level 2, aimed at supporting you to progress to Level 3 programmes the following year. If you think this applies to you, please get in touch so we can advise you on the most appropriate courses.

It is now an absolute requirement that any student who has not yet achieved GCSE English Language and / or GCSE Maths at Grade C or above must be working towards this as part of their study programme.

Our advice is for students to select courses in line with their future plans, but you should also consider subjects you have shown ability in and that you will enjoy.

College entry requirements• To be enrolled on any A Level study programme at RTSFC, students

will be expected to have achieved a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grade A*-C in a range of subject areas – in all cases, this must include English Language.

• A number of subjects also require GCSE Maths and Science at Grades A*-C.

• A few subjects have specific entry requirements, which can be found on our subject information pages.

• We also require applicants to have a good school reference (including attendance and behaviour record) and a positive college pre-enrolment interview.

Harry BenhamFormerly Noadswood SchoolStudying A Level Photography, IT and Further Maths

I knew that I belonged at RTSFC as soon as I arrived here – the supportive atmosphere and teachers instantly made me feel welcome.

In addition to my subjects, I took the Extended Project Qualification to help me achieve my career goals. I’ve always been interested in fashion so I decided to use the skills gained through my Photography and IT courses to produce my own fashion magazine.

Completing this extra qualification allowed me to learn more about the fashion industry whilst improving my design skills, and I learnt a lot in the process.

I was so happy when I achieved two A*’s and an A on results day, and now I’m off to study Fashion Management at Manchester University in September.

Ilaha ZelgayFormerly St Anne’s School Studying BTEC Health and Social Care, BTEC Law and GCSE Maths

I came to RTSFC because I knew I’d get more attention from my teachers here due to it being a smaller college. I like the fact it’s a close community where everybody knows each other.

The Health and Social Care lessons here are very practical and we take part in a variety of activities to help our learning. Outside of lessons I’m a Tutor Group Representative, which means I attend meetings with staff to suggest changes that will improve college life for students.

I haven’t decided what I’d like to do in the future yet, but with the time management and independent learning skills I’ve learnt at college, I think I’d like to study either Law or Health and Social Care at university.

I like the variety of subjects I’ve chosen at RTSFC as the lessons are fun but you still learn a lot, and have access to facilities like Mac computers.

I’ve been to lots of Careers events here and even had mock interviews with employers at the Employability Conference. This experience helped me to secure an apprenticeship as a mortgage advisor, which starts when I leave college - I’m really excited that I’ll be earning, and learning straight away!

Progression

Many students progress onto university, studying subjects such as Game Design, Ethical Hacking, Network Security, Software Engineering and Computing. This fast-paced industry also offers many apprenticeship opportunities in areas such as desktop, network and technical support.

I came to RTSFC because I liked the welcoming atmosphere when I visited for Open Evenings and Taster Days. Here, you’re treated as an individual and whatever career you decide on, you know you will have the support of your teachers to get there.

It’s always been my dream to work in the media and I’m arranging industry work experience for when I finish college, before studying Broadcast Journalism at university.

Outside of my lessons, I decided to try something new and joined the Boxing Academy to maintain my fitness. Taking part in a sport alongside my studies has helped to break up my workload and I’ve been on trips to Bodypower Expos to learn more about nutrition and training.

The best thing about coming to RTSFC is that I’ve met so many different people here and I know I’ve made some friends for life.

Alex LockheartFormerly Mountbatten School Studying BTEC Music Technology, A Level Music and English Literature

I started playing guitar when I was 12, and joined the jazz ensemble at RTSFC because I wanted to expand my skills as a guitar player. Over the past two years there have been so many opportunities for me to perform - I’ve played in Choral Concerts, Music for Youth and even performed for Education Ministers at the NUT Conference in Brighton.

Playing at the National Finals of Music for Youth was amazing – to play our own composition to an audience gave me a real confidence boost and we even got a standing ovation! The judges awarded us ‘Achievement in Innovation’ for our creativity and ability to improvise, which we were thrilled with.

After college, I’m taking part in the National Jazz Youth Collective summer school, encouraging young people to get into jazz. Then I’m headed to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to study Jazz – I can’t wait!

Over the past two years there have been so many

opportunities for me to perform.

Jack GallacherFormerly Regents Park Community College Studying A Level Music, Maths and Physics

I came to Richard Taunton’s because of the excellent Music department here. I’m a member of Southampton City Windband and City of Southampton Jazz band, and I knew the college had a good reputation for music through my involvement in these groups.

The highlight of my time here has been performing in the Choral Concerts – having the opportunity to play with a full orchestra is a fantastic experience.

After college I’m going to study the Tonmeister sound engineering course at Surrey University. Out of 100 people that apply for the course, only 25 people are offered a place so my teachers gave me personal tutorials to prepare for the assessment process. It’s a prestigious course, so I was really happy when I was offered a place.

... having the opportunity

to play with a full orchestra is a fantastic

experience.

you to follow your interests

Gavin RebeiroFormerly overseas Studying A Level Maths, Politics and English Language with GCSE Maths, English and Science

I came to RTSFC because it was the only college that would let me take A Level and GCSE courses alongside each other when I first moved here. It’s been challenging taking GCSE and A Level Maths in one year, but the staff are really supportive and now I’m predicted to get a B grade.

The teachers here really encourage you to follow your interests, so I started a Debate Club, which has helped to further my interest in Politics. I was even named Best Speaker at the Southampton Regional Debating Matters competition last year.

I’d recommend RTSFC because the staff here try their best to cater to your specific needs and tailor the courses to what you want to do. Without them, I never would have considered studying for a BSc in Maths, which is what I plan to do when I leave college.

I’ve been playing golf since I was six years old, and after I finished school I travelled around Europe on golf development tours, turning pro at 25. Despite my success, I always felt like there was a gap in my education, so I decided to come to RTSFC and study Sport.

I’d heard great things about studying Sport here and when I met with the staff, they were very encouraging and sparked my interest in learning again. Being a mature student isn’t easy, but there’s lots of support in place at college.

Completing my education has given me a great sense of achievement. After college I plan to go to Southampton Solent University and join their high-performance athlete scheme, so I can balance my education with my sport. I definitely want to continue playing, but I also want to help promote golf and encourage more girls to take part.

I came to RTSFC after originally sitting my A Levels at another college in Southampton. The grades I got first time around didn’t reflect my true potential, so I came here to improve my knowledge of the Sciences and get the grades I needed for university.

The extracurricular opportunities here are fantastic; during my time here I’ve been Project Manager of the Student Robotics team, completed work experience at Southampton General Hospital and even visited CERN in Geneva to see the large hadron collider in action.

A Levels are challenging, but the support you receive here is first class. Since being at RTSFC my grades have drastically improved and I’ve been accepted at Keele University to study Neuroscience – coming to RTSFC is the best decision I’ve ever made!

57Finance at College

At Richard Taunton’s, we have a range of financial support on offer for students who may need assistance to study at college.

Finance at College

College DepositFunding for post-16 education is decreasing, and all colleges must work harder to ensure that funds deliver high quality teaching for students. It is therefore essential that we eliminate any wasted expenditure where possible.

For this reason, all daytime students will be asked to pay a college deposit of £50 when they enrol at RTSFC. The deposit will be returned in full upon leaving college, provided we are not left with any of these costs:

• The cost of replacing books, equipment or any other items which are not returned

• The cost of repairing damage caused to loaned items or college equipment, fixtures and fittings

• The cost of registering and entering for exams or coursework which were not completed

Course ContributionsAlthough we receive government funding to cover the cost of your tuition, during your studies you will have access to extra materials and activties as part of your course.

Therefore we ask students to make an annual payment towards the additional costs of your course. Further information about course contributions is available on our website.

Bursary SchemeRTSFC offers a bursary scheme for students, designed to support young people who may face barriers in continuing their education. If you qualify for our bursary, assistance can be provided in the form of a discounted bus pass, free school meals (see below) or direct payments into your bank account.

Full details of our eligibility criteria can be found on our website, along with the application form.

Free School MealsThe provision of free school meals has been extended to some students aged 16-18, meaning students may be eligible for a daily free meal from our college café. If you think you may qualify for free school meals, please read the eligibility criteria on our website and fill in an application form.

If you think you may be eligible for financial support, please contact Student Services on 02380 514720 or [email protected].

58 General information

Each year we publish a college diary on our website that includes information for parents and students. This informs you of dates for holidays, parents consultation evenings, art exhibitions and dramatic and musical events.

Parents have the legal right to access copies of government orders and circulars about the curriculum, inspection reports, exam specifications and schemes of work. Parents who wish to see any of these should contact the Principal.

The details in this prospectus are given in good faith, and are correct at the time of going to print. However, changes may have to be made prior to September 2016. If you have any further questions please telephone Reception on 02380 511811.

Equal OpportunitiesRichard Taunton Sixth Form College is committed to equality and diversity. Our policy is to establish and maintain an environment in which there is equality of opportunity in all aspects of education and employment. The college challenges prejudice and develops its curriculum and services to meet the diverse needs of the community it supports.

Extending OpportunitiesRTSFC is committed to widening participation within the local community and works closely with key organisations to extend educational opportunities. The college also aims to ensure that people with disabilities, including those with learning difficulties, are treated fairly. All reasonable adjustments to provision will be made to ensure that students and other people with disabilities are not substantially disadvantaged.

Overseas studentsRTSFC is registered with the Home Office as a sponsor for overseas students who need to obtain a Tier 4 Student Visa in order to enter the UK and study with us. This will apply to any nationals from a country outside the European Economic Area (EEA), who do not already have leave to remain in the UK for the duration of their studies. Further information can be found at: www.gov.uk /browse/v i sas- immigrat ion/ study-visas.

Overseas applicants should apply using the application form on the college website before March 2016. A checklist will be issued, listing further documentation required for the college to assess the applicant’s eligibility for the course, based on existing qualifications, school reports and certificated standard of English. The fees are fixed at £5,550 per year for all courses, which must be full time. The college requires the first year’s fee as a deposit which will be fully refunded in the event that permission to enter the UK is not granted.

If the college is able to offer a place, a Certificate of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) will be requested from the Home Office and sent to the applicant, who must then apply for a visa using the CAS. The college cannot assist with the visa application process.

Overseas students will need to present their passport, ID card, immigration status document and, if relevant, police registration certificate when they enrol at the college. The college is required to keep copies of these documents. Your visa, if issued, is not transferable between educational institutions. The college is required to provide regular reports of sponsored students to the Home Office, including students who fail to enrol or miss lessons.

Data Protection Act 1998RTSFC complies with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998. Factual information about applicants and students will be entered into the college database, processed electronically and used for administrative/academic purposes.
