PROSPECTING, PLUGGER + SAMPLES, GEOLOGY AND VLF-EM SURVEY ON THE UNDERBILL PROPERTY
For
JIM MCMAHON
JAN. 19, 1994BY: BARBARA KOWALSKI
NOiSIAlO 3NINIW
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this report is to summarize the results from
the prospecting, samples assayed from the plugger holes, geology
and VLF-EM completed over a portion of the grid. The geology,
spotting plugger holes were completed during July 10th to 14th.
The scheduled time for drilling the plugger holes and prospecting
are outlined in the OPAP submission daily log forms.
LOCATION
The Undersill property, is located two to six kilometers
west northwest of the town of Beardmore, south of the secondary
Highway 580 which leaves Highway 11, one kilometer north of
Beardmore for 7.5 km.
PAST WORK
Exploration work began in 1910 on the property with limited
amount of work. The exploration work resumed with drilling,
blasting, prospecting in 1937 on the Murphy Showing where a
channel sample across 5 inches returned a gold grade of 0.06
ounces per ton.
The next stage of work was completed in 1983, with a ground
magnetic and geological survey over a portion of the claims.
In 1984, Geoscience Laboratories, Ontario Geological Survey,
obtained sampled the property and in one of the grab samples of a
sheared greywacke and quartz returned a gold grade of 0.02 ounces
of gold per ton.
In 1988, Nipigon Gold Resources Ltd. completed a program of
line-cutting, three drill holes, airborne magnetometer and
electromagnetic surveys on the property. Stripping, trenching,
some sampling, and geological mapping of the strappings was
completed at the time. Results from the drill holes returned low
grades of gold.
CURRENT WORK
GENERAL GEOLOGY
The Beardmore-Geraldton area is underlain by rocks of the
Wabigoon Subprovince that is typified by Archean metavolcanics
and metasedimentary sequences intruded by felsic and mafic
intrusives and dykes. Regional faults strike east such as the
Sandra Lake Fault are important to the area since major gold
deposits occur on or near these faults.
PROPERTY GEOLOGY
The property is dominated by east trending Timiskaming
metasediments, magnetite-hematite-chert-jasper banded iron
formation. The iron formation is oriented northeast direction.
The iron formations vary in width from a few inches to a few feet
in width. Quartz veins are typically associated with the iron
formations and often contain sulphides. The sulphides that occur
in the veins are pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, bornite,
malachite, minor arsenopyrite and galena.
The iron formations are folded and it is within the drag
folds that gold was encountered during the plugger survey.
PROSPECTING, PLUGGER SAMPLING, DESCRIPTIONS AND ASSAYS
The areas that were prospected are located in claims TB
1196508 and TB 887270. The area in claim 1196508 is hosted by
greywackes that are fine-grained sugary in texture and are
massive. The general strike and dip of the greywackes was
determined to be 090/80S. A number of narrow quartz veinlets and
stringers occur in the unit. The greywackes appear sheared toward
the contact with the iron formations. In the massive sequence of
greywackes are iron formations. The iron formations are oxide
facies and contain up to 15% sulphides. Sugary and glassy quartz
veinlets cross-cut the iron formations. The iron formations
strike 090 however were determined to be overturned in the
sequence 85N.
Plugger hole sampling
Seventy-six dust samples were collected carefully into
bags from the plugger holes. The depth of the plugger holes were
1.5 feet. These samples were taken along the iron formation,
particularly where sulphides were apparent. The results from the
program revealed that gold occurs along the drag folds or in the
noses of the folds of the iron formation. Those samples that
carried gold were #32- 0.127opt, #34- 0.072opt, #54- 0.049, #66-
0.142opt. These are the highest assays ever obtained on the
property. Assays from the remainder of the samples are shown on
the assay certificate.
Note; All sample descriptions- dust taken from plugger holes in
magnetite-hematite-jasper iron formation. Sugary to glassy
quartz veinlets cross-cut the iron formation. The veins are 2 to
5 inches in width. The iron formation contains sulphides of
pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, bornite, minor arsenopyrite and
galena as fine disseminations 1mm in diameter and massive vein
lets. The sulphides occur in varying amounts from l to 15%
concentrations.
The second area that was prospected and geology completed
was claim 887270. Banded iron formations and quartz veins from a
few inches to a few feet were encountered. A number of old
trenches were also encounterd. Samples were attempted to be
taken, however, the veins and the banded iron formation were so
flat lying and smooth, it made it very difficult to obtain a
sample for assay. A plugger hole and subsequent blasting is
necessary to obtain good samples. It was observed however, that
up to 5% sulphides, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and galena
occur in the iron formation. The iron formation is variably
silicified with a bluish quartz. Just to the east of the proper
ty along strike of the iron formation similar rocks were drilled
and returned assays several ounces of gold per ton and sections
as high was 40 feet in width with a gold grade of 0.50 ounces per
ton. This area should be the focus for the exploration program.
VLF-EM SURVEY
A Crone Radem VLF-EM was utilized using Cutler, Maine 17.8
kHz transmitter station over the 12.55 km grid. The survey was
completed during the period from January 1st to the 12th. The
base stations were located along the base line. The readings
were read every 16 meters such that the conductors may be
depicted. All readings were corrected with the base station
readings. The profile scale used was lcm equals 10*. The dip
and the horizontal field strength were measured and the results
plotted on Map l found at the back of this report.
RESULTS OF THE SURVEY
Two conductors occur on the grid. Conductor A located north
of the base line is a weak conductor and crosses the entire
property. An esker occurs in this area and therefore, the
conductor may be reflected as part of the overburden. Conductor
B located to the south of the grid is a strong conductor and
represents the banded iron formation. This conductor continues
across the property.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The area in the banded iron formation that carries gold
should be further evaluated, that is, a further program of
backhoe stripping should be completed to uncover a further
portion of the iron formation which continues along strike. A
backhoe stripping program should also be completed over the the
northerly claim where a number of trenches were encountered. A
program of sampling, including plugger holes and blasting should
be completed in the area. The VLF-EM, magnetometer and geologi
cal surveys should be completed over the entire property. The
expenditures for the next program are outlined below.
