SIGNIFICANCE OF KUMBHA MELA

Kumbha Mela is a mass piligrmage of faith and is considered to be the

largest peaceful temporary gathering in the world. Every three years,

Kumbha Mela is held by rotation in India in Haridwar, Allahabad, Nashik and Ujjain. Then

there are the Ardha Kumbha Melas at Haridwar and Allahabad, every six years, the Purna

Kumbha Mela held only at Allahabad every 12 years. The last Kumbha Mela at Nashik in

the 12-year cycle was held in 2003. As such, the ensuing Kumbha Mela will be held there

during July 2015 to September 2015. It is expected that over 1 crore pilgrims would

participate in the Mela. People from across the globe also visit the Mela. It is now a

location for great documentaries, including National Geographic channel and other

channels.

Kumbha Mela holds lot of significance to the people in India. People look up to Kumbha

Mela as an event that gives them a golden opportunity to liberate themselves from the

miseries and sufferings of life. It enables them to take a holy dip in the sacred water and

wash away all the sins they have committed in the past. People come from different parts

of the country to be a part of this sacred ceremony. All religions believe that the destiny of

mankind is determined by the celestial war that goes on between good and evil. All

festivals, in essence, are a celebration of the victory of good. And it is believed that the

greatest blessing for the pilgrim - both the holy man and the ordinary person - is by

bathing in the holy waters.

SINHASTHA KUMBHA MELA 2015 (NASHIK)

Nashik is the venue for the next Kumbha Mela 2015 which will be held on the banks of

river Godavari. Kumbha Mela in Nashik happens after a period of 12 years. As per the

survey conducted by the government, around over 1 crore pilgrims are expected to arrive

and take holy bath in the river Godavari to

cleanse their body and souls. The Kumbha

Mela is scheduled from 14/7/2015 to

26/9/2015, with the Shahi Snans (holy bath)

on Aug. 29, Sept. 13 and 18 Sept. 2015.

OUR ORGANISATION

The Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation was founded in 1965 by

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba to enable its members to undertake

service activities as a means to spiritual advancement.

The Organisation derives inspiration, guidance and strength from Bhagawan Baba’s

mission and message of propagating the truth of man’s inherent divinity, which is

proclaimed and preached by all religions of the world. In consonance with this truth, the

Organisation has, as its main objective, practice of selfless love and service without any

distinction of religion, nationality, race, socio-economic status, either for those who work

in the Organisation or for those who are served by them. Thus, it transcends all barriers,

leading humanity towards the ideal of ‘Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man’. In

fact, this spiritual basis enables every one in the Organisation to pursue his own religion

better by putting its teachings into practice by way of love and service to the God who

dwells in all hearts. That is why the Organisation features in its emblem the symbols of

some of the major religions of the world.

MISSION STATEMENT

“The main objective of the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation," as Sathya Sai Baba states, "is

to help man recognize the divinity that is inherent in him. So, your duty is to emphasize the

One, to experience the One in all you do or speak. Do not give any importance to

differences of religion or sect or status or color. Have the feeling of oneness permeate

every act of yours”.

The principal objectives of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation are:

1 To help the individual

• to be aware of the Divinity that is inherent in him and to conduct himself accordingly;

• to translate into practice in daily life, divine love and perfection; and therefore

• to fill one's life with joy, harmony, beauty, grace, human excellence and lasting

happiness;

2 To ensure that all human relations are governed by the principles of Sathya (Truth),

Dharma (Right Conduct), Shanthi (Peace), Prema (Love) and Ahimsa (Non-violence).

3 To make devotees more sincere and dedicated in the practice of their respective

religions by understanding properly the true spirit of their religion.

And also to practice and inculcate the core teachings of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Love All Serve All | Help Ever Hurt Never | Service to Man is Service to God

The Organisation provides the platforms of Educare, Medicare and Sociocare to serve humanity.

NEED FOR THE MEDICAL PROJECT

According to government estimates, over 1 crore pilgrims are

expected to participate at Sinhastha Kumbha Mela 2015 at Nashik-

Trimbakeshwar. Of these, conservatively, over 10 to 12 lakh pilgrims would require

medical assistance for the reasons stated below:

Timely treatment can nip various illnesses in the bud, thereby preventing complications

and insurmountable treatment costs. This is where Sri Sathya Sai Mobile Medical Project

comes in.

• Even though it being very auspicious, this gathering (Mela) may witness chaos, due to

huge crowds and possibility of stampedes.

• Massive health problems like gastroenteritis and water borne diseases caused due to

various factors like impure drinking water, poor quality of food etc. Outbreak of

epidemics cannot be ruled out.

• Inadequate sanitation facilities.

• Poor access to basic health care facilities.

• Kumbha Mela though being a religious and spiritual event by nature also has a political

importance.

VISION

This Mobile Medical Project envisages provision of free medicines and medical treatment

to all needy pilgrims in a very professional, organized, systematic manner and will be

freely available to all, irrespective of caste, creed, religion or financial capacity.

IMPLEMENTATION

We propose to set up 20 static / mobile medicare dispensaries (locations allotted by the

government authorities ). These locations are at various vantage points on the access

roads, congregation and bathing points, where a large number of pilgrims can avail of the

facilities. We expect approximately 700 / 800 patients per day. Each point will be manned

by two doctors, four para medics and four volunteers, for about 12 to14 hours on a

regular day and for longer hours on the days of Shahi Snan (holy bath).

All points will be equipped with a wide range of quality medicines and disposables. Basic

diagnostic equipments will also be available at the centres.
