Proposed Whau River Bridge Underpass for Te Atatu
---== Connecting Our Community ==---
Whau River Bridge Underpass
• Where?
• Underneath the Whau River Bridge on the Te Atatu side
• Connecting Te Atatu South with Te Atatu Peninsula
• Linking Bridge Avenue with Harbourview-Orangihina Park
Site • All on publicly-owned land
• South of Whau River Bridge is an escarpment called the Bridge Avenue Reserve (#28 Bridge Avenue on Council’s GIS map)
• North of Whau River Bridge is Harbourview-Orangihina Park
• The underpass would connect these two pieces of land owned by the people of Te Atatu

Benefits • Direct connection of Whau Greenways Project with Te Atatu
Peninsula Walkway
• Enhanced community integration for Te Atatu South & North
• Amenity for walkers, cyclists, sightseeing (Harbourview Circle)
• Link to future harbour ferry service
• Link to future marae in Harbourview
• Would assist restorations in the regionally significant Harbourview Reserve (Auckland Council – Forest & Bird)
Previous Council Policy
• Waitakere City Council
• Waitakere District Plan/Environment Court Decision No. W 041/2007 – Policy 11.52 Marae Special Area (Te Atatu)
• “Any development in the Marae Special Area (Te Atatu) shall be designed to be compatible with landscape features, amenity values, the existing and future development of Harbourview-Orangihina Park, the special amenity and ecological qualities of the adjoining Open Space Environment, Whau River and Waitemata Harbour, and in particular should provide that: … pedestrian linkages are provided for, including through enhancement of the coastal edge …”
Further Enhancement
• Accessing the SH16 cycleway from Bridge Avenue
• A public right-of-way connects Alwyn Ave with Bridge Avenue (between #25 & #27 Alwyn Avenue and #15A Bridge Avenue)
– Alwyn Avenue could be connected with SH 16 cycleway across land on which houses were demolished for motorway upgrade
– Cyclists and pedestrians could access the cycleway from Bridge Avenue via Alwyn Avenue
• Alternatively, the cycleway access could pass across the Bridge Avenue Reserve, which has very fine views and should be developed as a public amenity – Presently not readily accessible and encroached on by Alwyn Avenue
