COMMERCIAL FISHERY ADVISORTo complement the technical analysis, Parks Canada has also hired a respected commercial fisherman to act as Commercial Fishery Advisor to Parks Canada. Lewis Bublé, a third-generation commercial fisherman and vessel owner/operator for over 30 years, has been in this role since 2005. Mr. Bublé has been instrumental in both trying to build awareness of the feasibility study within the commercial fishing community, and with helping Parks Canada better understand and appreciate the perspectives and operations of the commercial fishing industry.
WORKING TOGETHERNot all fisheries or fishing vessels are the same! Commercial fishing is a complex industry with many gear types, harvesting methods and target species, so Parks Canada is using several strategies to fully understand the interests of this group.
One example is the collaboration between Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and Parks Canada on the creation of the maps found in this Atlas. DFO provided the base data for the maps and Parks Canada generated the visual representation.
Commercial fishing is recognized for its social, cultural and economic importance to communities as well as to the provincial and national economy. Ecologically sustainable commercial fishing would be allowed in the proposed Southern Strait of Georgia NMCA Reserve.
There are currently 14 active commercial fisheries in the southern Strait of Georgia.
Dungeness crab has been commercially harvested since 1885; in the 1950s the market focus changed from a canned product to fresh-cooked and live crab.
Spot prawns begin life as males and then later transform into females – that makes them “protandric hermaphroditic”!

All data follows the “3-licence-rule” which establishes that in order for information
to be released, at least three boats or three license holders must have reported
activity in the area over a given unit of time. This measure ensures that publically-
released information does not compromise the competitive position of any
individual harvester. As a result of these sensitivities, maps in this section may not
report on all of the data for the region.
All maps display catch in kilograms based on statistical natural breaks (a
mathematical method for classifying a range of values by identifying groupings or
patterns present within the data).
