To the City of Los Angeles,

Catalyst and Gebesa have teamed up to provide a solution to support the city of Los Angeles in its’ efforts to provide a cost effective way to provide shelter for the growing homeless population using modular furniture in a creative and utilitarian way.

We approached this challenge by incorporating 5 design elements in creating the Single, Single w/ wheelchair access and the Doubles modules for this project. They include:

Flexibility – We are using Gebesa’s Elite frame and tile system to offer complete flexibility by using a standard kit of parts, connectors and frames to assemble the modules. We have incorporated plug and play power distribution to allow the Homeless Shelter to reconfigure the facility at any given time.

Adaptability – The Elite tile and frame system is perfect for this application because the configuration can change within the identified modules and your facilities group can remove the 55” laminate panels hanging from the frames to make any internal changes to power distribution, lighting or future additions to the modules.

Durability – The Elite frames are constructed out of steel. The steel frames are connected with bolts that provide strength and rigidity between frames. The frame’s adjustable floor glides allow the frame to become level with the concrete floor. The Elite full-length laminate tiles attach to the steel frames with factory attached brackets. The tiles can be removed by the facilities / maintenance person for future electrical work or reconfigurations. Gebesa offers 10 standard laminates. We chose two color variations to create a warmer environment for the visitor. All laminates are laid-up and pressed by Gebesa. Laminate tiles are entirely sealed to avoid moisture damage from mopping the floors.

Cleanability – The sealed laminate tiles and painted steel frames can be wiped down with the harshest of disinfectants. Laminate tiles run the entire length of the frames to eliminate seams and gaps.

Stability – The Elite frame and tile system gains stability from bolting one frame together with another frame as well as using 2-way, 3-way and 4-way connectors to add 90-degree connections to provide rigidity to the system.

Gebesa manufactures the bed frames. This unique bed frame design connects into opposing 36” frames, which locks the modular panels into a ridged rectangle using 90-degree connections. Our approach to this application keeps the end panels from gravitating out into the hallways. This keeps all of the modules “In Square”.

Power Distribution System – is very important to the function of these modules. Power runs through the existing internal raceway to provide internal-only outlets for the nightlight and USB devices to plug into. The electrical system and outlets are not accessible to the visitors. Please review our power distribution drawing. We show the use of a power pole delivering 3 circuits to a cluster of sleeping modules that incorporate the electrical system. Gebesa’s electrical system is UL listed and passes and exceeds all requirements set by ANSI/BIFMA and the National Electric Code (NEC)

In this current design, no user / visitor can access the power unless they plug their device into the USB charger located on the face of the panel.

Facilities / maintenance personnel are the only ones that can remove the full size tile and have complete access to the frames interior and to the electrical system. The electrical system can be expanded or reduced depending on the need and usage.

Gebesa’s Elite product line is protected with a ten-year warranty including the electrical system.

Nightlight application – We are using the SpotMod ultra-bright single LED light source tile that can either be mounted on the outside or inside of the panel. This fixture offers exceptional color rendering with 90+ CRI values, delivers 220 lumens that will plug into the internal panel power system. The SpotMod can come with a dimmer as an accessory. See attached documentation. Light fixture is warranted for three (3) years.

USB device – This retrofit double USB charging device is manufactured by Byrne Electrical Specialists Inc. and can be located in the panellocated near the head of the bed. Location will be determined by the City of LA. This charging device requires power and has a 72” long power cord that will plug into an internal outlet located inside the frame. The electrical system and outlets are not accessible to the visitors. Charging device is UL Listed and all Byrne certifications apply and warranted for three (3) years. See attached.

Materials and finishes – Gebesa offers 15 standard laminates and 7 standard metal finishes. Any of these laminates and finishes can be applied to the modules of the modular furniture. See attached.

Gebesa warranties their products for 10 years unless noted otherwise. Gebesa ships replacements parts in two weeks. Gebesa reimburses the dealer, Catalyst for any warranty work for 10 years.

I hope that these explanations and attachments have helped in conveying our design concepts behind the modular furniture systemsapproach in supporting the City of LA’s Homeless Shelter solution.

Submission lacks sufficient detail to verify compliance with design intent and specifications — bidder is requested to provide additional clarification/supporting documentation to address the following:2. We used two laminate finishes in the design; Silver laminate for all of the wing panels and Spanish Oak for the spine and hutch. This was shown in the renderings. 3. LED aisle light is shown installed within an extra corner post not shown in the design drawings and facing the incorrect direction (needs to face the walkway outside the sleeping unit). Bidder to confirm if the light can be positioned in the face of the panel, not an additional corner post, as depicted in the design drawings. If the light cannot be installed in the face of the panel as shown in the design drawings, bidder to confirm that the light can be installed in the outward facing side of the additional corner post and that the adjacent panel can be provided at a shorter length (34" side) so the additional post will not reduce the clear width of the entry into the sleeping pod.Gebesa has removed the corner posts from all modules. Please see the revised drawings showing only the panels and their finished ends. The end panel closest to the bed has the light mounted facing the hallway. Originally we thought it needed to light both the inside and outside of the module. Please see the Night Light Placement Options (1 & 2) and cut sheets for the light fixture.

4. Submission notes that storage and bed can be provided upon request for more information. Bidder to confirm that the proposed solution can support the bed on a frame that meets the specifications and provide a cost to add. Bidder to confirm that storage unit with clear space below can be provided that meets the specification and provide a cost to add.Gebesa included the bed frame and storage hutch in the drawing and provided pricing. However, we did not include the lockable box that slides underneath the hutch because it was non-descript. The bed frame design is unique in that it attaches to four (4) laminate clad steel panel frames in each module locking the bed frames to the laminated panels. This eliminates panels from migrating out into the walkways. See Sleeping Module Configuration.

5. Page 18 of the submission includes a detailed plan layout of the proposed system. Bidder to clarify the intent, purpose, and location of the additional diagonal members identified as "BE53288-3-48".BE53288-3-48 is a 48” power jumper for the internal electrical system. This is just how the CAD program shows it going through a 4-way connector on the plan. Please see Power Distribution plan

6. Page 18 of the submission includes a detailed plan layout of the proposed system. Bidder to clarify the existence of several unspecified power outlets "inside panel" with "no access when laminate panels are applied to frames". What are these outlets for? Are they required? Will the proposed inaccessible outlets covered by laminate panels meet City of Los Angeles code and provide a safe installation?Gebesa will be using the internal UL listed duplex receptacles (outlets) to deliver power to the USB and the night-light. This duplexes snap into (safety device) the Elite power system. This means that the city does not have to wire the panels at all except to the building power supply. Our panels will have all of the electrical including the USB and the night-light.

Bidder to clarify the fixture intended to be used for this application, and that if a custom fixture is proposed that the manufacturer will bear the cost of testing to receive a listing from Underwriters Laboratory (UL Listing).Gebesa is recommending the SpotMod light fixture that will illuminate the outside of the panel module. The light fixture can be surfaced or internally mounted; this application is up to the City of LA. We changed the light fixture due to the removal of the connector application.
