PROPHASE
METAPHASE
ANAPHASE
TELOPHASE
PROPHASE Chromosomes condense and
nucleoli disappear Each duplicated chromosome
becomes visible as distinct sister chromatids
Mitotic spindle begins to form in the cytoplasm
The nuclear envelope breaks down and the centrosomes move toward the poles of the cell
Mitotic spindle attaches to a specialized structure called the kinetochore

METAPHASE Chromosomes convene on the
metaphase plate

ANAPHASE Sister chromatids separate and move
toward opposites poles of the cell by the spindle
As this happens the cell begins to elongate toward the poles

TELOPHASE Cell continues to elongate throughout
the phase The mitotic spindle breaks down Nuclear envelope forms at each end of
the cell Chromosomes inside begin to unfold
into chromatin

DEFINITIONS Mitotic Spindle- A network of
microtubules formed during mitosis. These microtubules attach to the centromeres of the chromosomes and help draw the chromosomes.
Kinetochore- A disc of proteins located on the centromere, specialized to interact with the spindle fibers during mitosis.
