Properties of Matter

• Physical Properties- observable with your 5 senses– characteristic that is used to identify

common objects

– ex. Shape, hardness, color, smell, taste, density, mass

Chemical Propeties

• Chemical Properties– How a substance reacts with another

substance

– Ex. Hydrogen(BALLOON) reacting with oxygen

– Rust - Iron reacting with oxygen in the air.

Mass

• Physical property • Amount of matter a substance has

– measured in grams. (g)

– tells us how much matter is present

weight

• Weight = measure of force of gravity on a object.– Different than mass.

• Ex. Person @ sea-level vs. Person @ top Mt Everest– Same mass but different weights– Because of the distance from the

center of the Earth

Density

• Amount of mass in a given volume

– Grams / cubic centimeter– g / cm3

– Density does not change with the amount of matter.

– Ex. Water = density = 1.0 g/cm3 - ALWAYS!

Try this!

• IF an object has a mass of 5.0g and has a volume of 10 cm3.

– What is the density of the object?
