Chemical property- is a characteristic of a substance that describes the way the substance undergoes or resists change to form a new substance.

When copper objects are exposed to moist air for long periods of time,

they turn green.

The green coating is a new substance.

Classify each of the following properties for selected metals as a physical property or a chemical property.

b. Silver metal shows no sign of reaction when placed in hydrochloric acid.

b. Chemical property. Reactivity with an acid as well as lack of reactivity with an acid are considered to be chemical properties.

Classify each of the following properties for selected metals as a physical property or a chemical property.

c. Copper metal possesses a reddish- brown color.

c. Physical property. The property of color is determined without changing the identity (composition) of the metal.

Classify each of the following properties for selected metals as a physical property or a chemical property.

d. Potassium metal, which has a shiny appearance when freshly cut, turns dull gray when exposed to air.

d. Chemical property. A change in color indicates the formation of a new substance.
