Prelude

Our third year is finally behind us with our corn research program

here at Larson Grain Company, along with our first year of the soybean re-

search and are pleased to be able to provide you with another years’ worth

of data. This year all plot sites except Adrian had uniform soil types and all

had fairly level topography.

At our Adrian soybean plot location, such variability was seen that for

data summarizing purposes, the location was discarded. For the Adrian corn

location, the (Plant Health/ Promoters) and the (Fungicide) sections were so

variable that data had to be discarded. As for weather, all sites had for lack of

better words were perfect, uniform emergence and almost no lodging. The

only issue that did affect us this year, especially in the Marion soybean site

was volunteer corn. But at that site the volunteer corn was so uniform it fortu-

nately didn’t affect the data quality significantly.

As always I feel it takes at least three years’ worth of data to justify

making a major change (using it across your entire farm) in your farming

practices. Fortunately we have a few products that have three years’ worth of

data behind them: Loveland RiseR & Accomplish LM, Rosen Versa Max Corn,

and SFP NutriSphere & Avail.

Description of Research Our goal at Larson Grain Company is to assist producers in selecting

products that will be the most effective in achieving their long-term produc-

tion needs. With Proper Product Placement (PPP) we plan to achieve this by

providing area producers with the latest up-to-date information on products

that are currently available for increasing overall corn plant health.

We had five research locations spread throughout South Central North

Dakota. These locations cover an arrangement of different farming practices

including irrigation, dry land, conventional tillage, and no-till systems. Our

current program planted two Producers Hybrids® on our irrigated studies:

5634 VT2RIB, which is a 96day hybrid, planted at a population of 36,000

seeds per acre. Along with our dry land studies: 4933 VT2RIB which is a 89

day hybrid, planted at a population of 30,000 seeds per acre.

Twenty-eight different products were tested on these hybrids with four

replications at each site location. Different application procedures were used

throughout the study included: seed treatments, in-furrow, 2x2, pre emer-

gence and foliar application at V5,VT and R5. Each plot was 10 feet wide by

100 feet long with 30” row spacing. PPP focused on using different fertilizers,

micronutrients, fungicides, growth promoters and regulators. Assessments

that were gathered throughout the growing season included: stand counts,

lodging scores, root evaluations, vigor scores, phototoxicity ratings after foli-

ar applications, tassel initiation, plant and ear height, test weight, moisture,

ear count, and grain yield.

Our soybean research program, is similar to corn, soybean research

sites used one variety, Syngenta NK S10P9 a 1.0 maturity planted @ approxi-

mately 150,0000 seeds/A. and the plots were 150 feet long and had sixteen

different products tested on the NK variety. Hopefully in 2015 we continue to

expand and provide un-biased localized data on products which are current-

ly available and coming available in the near future.

Larson Grain’s AgXplore Product Sheet

NZONE Max trials

NZONE Max is part of AgXplore’s line-up of nitrogen management products. NZONE

technology is the newest, non-pesticide based product that utilizes co-

polymer chemistry to alter nitrogen fertilizer conversion. It has been shown to main-

tain the more stable form of nitrogen (ammonium, NH4+) in the top 24” of soil for a

longer period of time through the growing season. It has been used successfully in

corn, sorghum, cotton, rice and several other crops. Changes in soil nitrogen forms

are often accompanied by increased grain yield and quality. Several lines of evi-

dence also suggest that NZONE technology reduces nitrate leaching into groundwa-

ter, an important consideration for improving not only profit but also environmental

loss of nitrogen. NZONE Max is formulated for UAN, dry urea and manure. It is rec-

ommended for growers who incorporate their nitrogen shortly after applica-

tion. These trials were conducted to determine the effects of using NZONE Max treat-

ed UAN on grain yield, cost/acre, and net return/acre in corn.

NZONE Max + NutriPak trials

In addition to testing AgXplore’s NZONE Max for nitrogen efficiency, we wanted to

evaluate the added benefit of using AgXplore’s NutriPak as a seed treatment in con-

junction with the NZONE technology. NutriPak is part of AgXplore’s line-up of plant

nutrition products. It is a highly versatile, multi-component product that can be used

as either a seed treatment or as a foliar vegetative stimulant. It contains a proprietary

blend of fertilizer (8-10-2), humic acid, biological components, and highly available

micronutrients. It has been used to successfully stimulate increased yields in corn,

soybeans, cotton, grain sorghum, alfalfa, vegetables, fruits, and many other crops. It’s

most notable visual effects include enhanced early seedling vigor (when used as a

seed treatment) and a stimulation of early to mid-season vegetative growth (when

used as a foliar nutrient package). Changes in enhanced seedling vigor and in-

creased vegetative growth are often accompanied by increases in grain

yield. NutriPak is a compatible tank-mix partner with many different herbicide spray-

ing programs. These trials were conducted to determine the effects of using

NZONE Max treated UAN, with or without NutriPak as a seed treatment, on grain yield,

cost/acre, and net return/acre in corn.

Larson Grain’s Nutrisphere® Dry Land Study

Purpose: NutriSphere® Nitrogen Fertilizer Manager shields nitrogen on the molecular

level, keeping enzymes at bay and more nitrogen in its ammonium form. This means

less leaching, less volatilization and more useable nitrogen to aid the health and de-

velopment of the plant. As a result, NutriSphere-N® is the most advanced nitrogen

manager on the market, adding flexibility to your application schedule and value to

your fertilizer investment

Radiate contains the growth hormones indole-butyric acid and kinetin. Radiate

stimulates early season root and shoot development helping improve nutrient and wa-

ter uptake. It also improves plant health and increases yield potential

Accomplish LM is a proprietary fertility catalyst formulated for blending with

liquid fertilizer products. When incorporated, it has been shown to help improve ferti-

lizer efficiency by aiding plants in obtaining nutrients more effectively thus contrib-

uting to overall plant vigor and quality

Larson Grain’s AgXplore Studies

NutriPak

NutriPak is part of AgXplore’s line-up of plant nutrition products. It is a highly versa-

tile, multi-component product that can be used as either a seed treatment or as a foli-

ar vegetative stimulant. It contains a proprietary blend of fertilizer (8-10-2), humic ac-

id, biological components, and highly available micronutrients. It has been used to

successfully stimulate increased yield in corn, soybeans, cotton, grain sorghum, alfal-

fa, vegetables, fruits, and many other crops. It’s most notable visual effects include

enhanced early seedling vigor (when used as a seed treatment) and a stimulation

of early to mid-season vegetative growth (when used as a foliar nutrient pack-

age). Changes in enhanced seedling vigor and increased vegetative growth are often

accompanied by increases in grain yield. NutriPak is a compatible tank-mix part-

ner with many different herbicide spraying programs. These trials were conducted to

determine the effects of using NutriPak as a seed treatment, on grain yield, cost/acre,

and net return/acre in soybeans.

NutriPak plus Prevent

In addition to the potential effects of NutriPak on soybeans, we wanted to evaluate the

added benefit of using Prevent for the phosphorus fertilizer component of soybean

production. Prevent is the newest phosphorus management aid on the market that has

been shown to increase available soil phosphorus, enhance root architecture,

and increase plant uptake of phosphorus. Prevent is manufactured with

three constituents: 1) co-polymer chemistry, 2) a mycorrhizae fungi component, and

3) organic acids. The co-polymers in Prevent are positively charged and are meant to

block soil fixation of phosphorus by soil cations. The mycorrhizae component is

thought to benefit both development of root mass as well as stimulate higher plant

phosphorus uptake. The organic acids in Prevent help break down insolu-

ble phosphate complexes within the soil and(or) fertilizer. Taken together, Prevent

can alter phosphorus fertilizer efficiency in ways that often enhance grain

yield. These trials were conducted to determine the synergistic effect of NutriPak and

Prevent on grain yield, cost/acre, and net return/acre in soybeans.
