JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

The Nels Cline Singers Macroscope

MAC1085 673203108523 CD MACK AVENUE £8.49 JAZZ ‘Macroscope’, the fifth album and Mack Avenue debut by the adventurous trio The Nels Cline Singers (led by guitarist Nels Cline), provides a measure of the long-running group’s staggering range. Captivating and continually surprising, the album finds the instrumental trio with the slyly deceptive name veering in one off-kilter direction only to suddenly be overwhelmed by another drastic stylistic shift, often within the space of a single tune. Serrated psychedelia becomes consumed by soulful Brasiliana, blissed-out electronica overwhelmed by garage-rock skronk. Then there’s the wholly unexpected “Red Before Orange”, where a howling Hendrix-inspired solo suddenly erupts in the middle of a slick lounge-jazz number, Cline unleashing the inner George Benson that few of us expected he even had. One of the most inventive and original guitarists across a wide range of genres, Nels Cline has worked with members of Sonic Youth and Deerhoof as well as artists including Tim Berne, Charlie Haden, Julius Hemphill, Carla Bozulich, Mike Watt, and The Geraldine Fibbers, and is the lead guitarist of Wilco. Cline has recorded an album of duets with guitarist Julian Lage and has toured in a free-improv meeting with jam/jazz trio Medeski Martin and Wood. Personnel: Nels Cline (guitar), Scott Amendola (drums), Trevor Dunn (bass), Plus Special Guests: Yuka C. Honda (keyboards), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Josh Jones (percussion), Zeena Parkins (harp) Tracks: Companion Piece / Canales' Cabeza / Respira / Red Before Orange / The Wedding Band / Macroscopic / Climb Down / Seven Zed Heaven / Hairy Mother / Sascha’s Book Of Frogs

Jackiem Joyner Evolve

ART7042 181475704225 CD ARTISTRY £8.49 JAZZ The fifth album by award-winning smooth jazz saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Jackiem Joyner and his first collection on which he wrote, produced and arranged all the songs. ‘Evolve’ features guests Gerald Albright and Keiko Matsui, with whom he tours the world as a member of her band. Juxtaposing invigorating otherworldly sonicscapes under gentle sax melodies, ‘Evolve’ is a dynamic, highly-rhythmic session that is unpredictable and laced with traces of the familiar. The imaginative set has a greater purpose. “Rather than fitting in with the traditional, I'm bringing the audience along with songs that unfold over different and interesting soundscapes even as I move towards a live organic sound.” Tracks: Generation Next / Europa (feat. Keiko Matsui) / Double Bass / Breathe / Evolve / Born To Fly / Interlude / Later Tonight / See Through Me / Big Step (feat. Gerald Albright) / A Gentle Walk On Water

JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Olegario Diaz Basquiat By Night/Day

SCCD31774 716043177424 CD STEEPLECHASE £8.49 JAZZ Pianist/composer Oregario Diàz, graduate of The Manhattan School of Music, divides his time in his homeland Venezuela and New York performing with different groups he leads. On ‘Basquiat By Night/Day’ his all-star quintet includes the exceptional talents of trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, saxophonist Seamus Blake and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. The title song dedicated to the New York-born Haitian artist Jean-Michel Basquiat reflects Diaz’ deep appreciation of various art forms. For this his third album Diaz put together a highly cohesive ensemble to paint an attractive collage of joyful music, with seven of the tracks composed by Diàz alongside covers of songs by Irving Berlin and Victor Young. Ole Nimand of Jazz Special (Denmark) commented on Diaz’ previous release ‘The Skyline Session’ (SCCD31753), “The two tunes from Diaz’ own pen confirm again his compositional talent and his melodies and expressive solos steal the scene...This is a brilliant and stylish presentation of the kind of jazz that is otherwise no longer on the throne these days.” Personnel: Olegario Diaz (piano), Alex Sipiagin (trumpet), Seamus Blake (tenor saxophone), Scott Colley (bass), Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums) Tracks: J. M. Basquiat / Dance Steps / Wayne And Joe / By Night / Day / They Say It's Wonderful / Astoria Years / Trane Station / Try Not To Lose It / Alone At Last

These include the two towns closest to his heart: his birth place High Point, North Carolina and his current home town near Boston, Roslindale. Jon Ross of Downbeat remarks of Jason, “Palmer is an exciting player - achieving pinpoint focus in his attack one minute, turning his concrete bebop lines into caramel, sliding through pitches and bending them to his will the next...he should go far.” Personnel: Jason Palmer (trumpet), Godwin Louis alto saxophone), Mark Turner (tenor saxophone), Mike Moreno (guitar), Edward Perez (bass), Kendrick Scott (drums) Tracks: Urban Renewal (for High Point) / Falling In (for Guimaraes) / Berlin / Bern / Rising Sign (for Paris) / Silver (for Xalapa) / American Deceptionalism Part I (for DC) / Spirit Song (for Rozzy) / American Deceptionalism Part II

JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 21/4/2014

Tori Freestone Trio In the Chop House

WR4648 0609613793905 CD WHIRLWIND RECORDINGS £7.99 JAZZ ‘In the Chophouse’ is the debut album from Tori Freestone, a saxophonist, flautist and violinist who has been performing at the forefront of the British improvised music scene as both a side women and highly regarded bandleader for over a decade. Her multi-faceted skills have seen her work as a core member with such diverse bands as the Ivo Neame Quintet/Octet, 'Compassionate Dictatorship' (her own co-led group with Jez Franks), Loop Collective's Rory Simmons as well as artists such as the Cuban group 'Orquesta Timbala', singer Brigitte Beraha, saxophone colossus Andy Sheppard and trumpeter Neil Yates. This wealth of experience has shaped Freestone’s playing and composing and this is highly evident on her debut. A robust tenor sound, melodic invention and a balance between wit and playfulness in her original songs mark Freestone’s music out, not to mention a strong willingness to blur the lines between the written and improvised. Comprised of long-time musical associates in the uber-creative drummer Tim Giles and highly original bassist Dave Manington, the trio has been developing Tori’s repertoire which explores the openness that the saxophone trio allows while taking inspiration from some of the non-chordal sax-led trios of the moment. “It’s forward thinking acoustic jazz...Freestone has her own playing voice and the trio display real rapport that’s stimulating and fresh.” - Marlbank Personnel: Tori Freestone (tenor saxophone), Dave Manington (double bass), Tim Giles (drums) Tracks: Bubble and Squeak / The Universal 4 / Lonesome George / Both Sides Now / But Not For Me / Mrs PC / My Lagan Love - In the Chop House / Pottering Around Review published on Marlbank Reviews confirmed in The Guardian Jazzwise, Jazz Journal Airplay confirmed on Jazz FM (Chris Philips, The Blueprint)

WORLD/AMBIENT NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Hakon Stene

Lush Laments for Lazy Mammal

HUBROCD2544 7033662025442 CD HUBRO £7.99 WORLD/AMBIENT On ‘Lush Laments for Lazy Mammal’, Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Håkon Stene has combined music by Britons Laurence Crane and Gavin Bryars with a new work by the distinctive Norwegian improvisational musician/composer and ECM recording artist Christian Wallumrød, who also plays on the album. Through performing these pieces together Stene has created a unique album of meditative contemporary music. It is not necessary to take more than a quick glance at Stene’s CV to realise that here is a musician with a broad horizon and a fearless attitude towards new instruments and genres. Stene has played folk music with Nils Økland and Benedicte Maurseth, electronica with Pantha de Prince and the Bell Laboratory, baroque music with Rolf Lislevand and contemporary music with asamisimasa, winner of a Spellemannspris (Norwegian Grammy). After many years of focusing on noise-based and complex contemporary music, Stene found it important to once again be able to work with clean, simple and harmonious expressive idioms. On the album he plays, in addition to melodic percussion instruments, both piano and guitar - the latter being an instrument he had not touched for nearly 20 years. Some listeners would undoubtedly place this music in the large drawer labelled “contemporary”, but it could equally well find a natural place in the record collections of post-rock, ambient or drone music fans. Personnel: Håkon Stene (vibraphone, quarter tone vibraphone, marimba, guitars, keyboards, piano), Heloisa Amaral (piano), Hans Kristian Kjos Sørensen (cimbalom), Tanja Orning (cello), Christian Wallumrød (piano) Tracks: Prelude for HS / Hi Tremolo / Bobby J / See Our Lake I) / Riis / Holt / Sit / Low Genths / Blue Blue Blue

CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Myung Whun Chung

Piano - Debussy, Chopin, Schubert, Schumann etc.

4810765 028948107650 CD ECM NEW SERIES £9.49 CLASSICAL The ECM New Series debut of Myung Whun Chung features the widely-celebrated conductor as pianist. Recorded at Venice’s Teatro La Fenice in July 2013, the album marks the first occasion that Chung has recorded solo. In a performer’s note, he describes the album as a gift for younger listeners, as well as a personal thanks to those who share his love of this music. Chung’s touch and sensitivity for dynamics cast a new light on familiar pieces - Debussy’s Clair de lune, two Chopin Nocturnes and a pair of Schubert Impromptus, Beethoven’s Für Elise, Schumann’s Träumerei and Arabeske, Tchaikovsky, and Mozart - as they are experienced in a gently flowing sequence which also serves to highlight affinities between the compositions. Although conducting now fully occupies his professional life, Chung (born 1953 in Seoul) made his debut as pianist with the Seoul Philharmonic at the age of seven. He later studied the piano with Maria Curcio, the last and favourite pupil of Artur Schnabel. In 1974 he was joint second prize-winner in the Tchaikovsky Competition (where he performed Tchaikovsky’s Autumn Song, revisited on this recording). He then began his career playing piano trios with his sisters, violinist Kyung Wha Chung and cellist Myung Wha Chung. Earlier recordings that feature Myung Whun Chung as pianist include albums of the Chung Trio playing Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Beethoven and more, as well as Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time with Paul Meyer, Gil Shaham, and Jian Wang. Myung Whun Chung also recorded with Cecilia Bartoli on the critically-lauded Chants d’Amour, Mélodies Françaises. Personnel: Myung Whun Chung (piano) Tracks: 1. Debussy: Clair de Lune 2. Chopin: Nocturne in D-flat major, op. 27/2 3. Beethoven: Für Elise 4. Tchaikowsky: Autumn Song 5. Schubert: Impromptu in E-flat major, D899/2 6. Schumann: Träumerei 7. Schumann: Arabeske 8. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Lisa Batiashvili, Adrian Brendel, Till Fellner & Roderick Williams

Harrison Birtwistle: Chamber Music

4765050 028947650508 CD ECM NEW SERIES £9.49 CLASSICAL This album of Sir Harrison Birtwistle’s chamber music and songs, mostly of recent vintage, is issued as the innovative Great British composer approaches his 80th birthday (he was born in Accrington in July 1934). It features an exceptional line-up of performers. Heard together and separately is the trio of Austrian pianist Till Fellner, Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili and English cellist Adrian Brendel. They are joined by London-born singers, soprano Amy Freston and baritone Roderick Williams. The compositions include “Bogenstrich” written in 2006 as a short piece in tribute to Alfred Brendel and first played by his son Adrian together with Till Fellner. It was subsequently expanded into a cycle with the addition of settings of Rilke for baritone, cello and piano. The Trio for piano, violin and cello is the newest piece, premiered in 2011, a 16-minute single movement work of elaborate patterning, gestures and responses. Settings of the concise writings of US Objectivist poet Lorine Niedecker (1903-1970), scored for soprano and cello in 1998 and 2000, begin and close the album. As Bayan Northcott writes in the booklet, “These concentrated songs demand the utmost of their performers in precision, expression and timing. As in Webern’s settings, the few words and notes on the page can seem to imply whole worlds of thought and feeling”. This highly-concentrated chamber-scale expressivity is felt throughout the entire album, recorded at Munich’s famed Herkulessaal, and produced by Manfred Eicher. Personnel: Lisa Batiashvili (violin), Adrian Brendel (cello), Till Fellner (piano), Amy Freston (soprano), Roderick Williams (baritone) Tracks: Three Settings Of Lorine Niedecker: 1. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Czech Philharmonic Orchestra & Kazuki Yamada

Kalinnikov: Symphony No. 1, Glazunov: Symphony No. 5, Khachaturian: Masquerade Suite

OVCL00487 4526977004873 Hybrid SACD2 EXTON £15.29 CLASSICAL Highly-regarded young Japanese conductor Kazuki Yamada already holds positions with several leading orchestras, including Principal Guest Conductor of Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and Resident Conductor of Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. For this two-channel double SACD recording, Yamada conducts the legendary Czech Philharmonic in a programme of music from Eastern Europe which includes works by Kalinnikov, Glazunov and Khachaturian. Now resident in Berlin, Kazuki Yamada was born in Kanagawa, Japan, in 1979. As a student, he formed the Yokohama Sinfonietta, where he remains Music Director. He was awarded the Ataka Prize in 2001 when he graduated from the conducting course at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music. In 2011 he received the Idemitsu Music Prize for young artists in Japan. Vassily Kalinnikov’s Symphony No.1 in G Minor was written in 1894 but not published until after his tragically early death in 1901 at the age of 35. It is a work steeped in the Russian folk tradition. Alexander Glazunov is a major figure of the late Russian Romantic period. In all, he completed eight symphonies. The fifth of these, which skilfully synthesises nationalist tradition and western technique, was written in 1895 and is the most well-known. Personnel: Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Kazuki Yamada (conductor) Disc 1: KALINNIKOV: Symphony No. 1 1. I. Allegro moderato 2. II. Andante commodamente 3. III. Scherzo. Allegro non troppo 4. IV. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Japan Philharmonic Orchestra & Kazuki Yamada

Mussorgsky (arr. Stokowski): Pictures at an Exhibition

OVCL00489 4526977004897 CD EXTON £8.99 CLASSICAL On this recording the brilliant young Japanese conductor Kazuki Yamada conducts the Japan Philharmonic in a programme which features the less well-known orchestral arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition by Leopold Stokowski. The disc also includes Debussy’s Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, and Ravel’s La Valse. This CD is taken from a live recording made at the inauguration concert of the highly-regarded Japanese conductor Kazuki Yamada as Resident Conductor of Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. Now resident in Berlin, Kazuki Yamada was born in Kanagawa, Japan, in 1979. He was awarded the Ataka-Prize in 2001 when he graduated from the conducting course at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music. In 2011 he received the Idemitsu Music Prize for young artists in Japan. Kazuki Yamada also holds positions with several other leading orchestras including Principal Guest Conductor of Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. The main feature of the programme performed at this event was Leopold Stokowski's arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The most well-known orchestral version of this suite was written by Ravel in 1922 at the request of conductor Serge Koussevitzky, but several other composers and musicians made arrangements of the piece, including the legendary conductor Leopold Stokowski. His version was written in 1939, and is notable for being more overtly Russian in its musical colour and primitiveness. Personnel: Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Kazuki Yamada (conductor) Tracks: MUSSORGSKY (arr. Stokowski): Pictures at an Exhibition 1. I. Promenade 2. II. Gnomus 3. III. Promenade 4. IV. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Anja-Nina Bahrmann, Maarten Engeltjes, Netherlands Radio Choir & Netherlands Chamber Philharmonic

Gavin Bryars: The War in Heaven

BCGBCD19 5052442004882 CD GB RECORDS £7.99 CLASSICAL The War in Heaven features not only that eponymous large-scale work by Gavin Bryars for voices and orchestra, but also the very first release of music from any of Bryars’ four operas, Epilogue from G. The recordings were made in the composer's presence and under his supervision. A large-scale cantata for two solo voices (soprano and male alto), half chorus, full chorus and orchestra, The War in Heaven was commissioned by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, who gave the first and, until now, only performance at the Royal Festival Hall in 1993. There are two parallel texts: one in English for the soloists that sets the monologue ‘The War in Heaven’ by Sam Shepard, the other in old Anglo-Saxon for the chorus. The solo vocal parts make extreme demands of the singers with virtuosic passages and very high notes - here two young singers with voices of extraordinary beauty and power, Anja-Nina Bahrmann and Maarten Engeltjes, who are not in the least intimidated by such things! The performance was recorded live in the Muziekgebouw, Amsterdam. Epilogue from G comes from the end of Gavin Bryars' third opera G (the full title is G, being the Confession and Last Testament of Johannes Gensfleisch, also known as Gutenberg, Master Printer, formerly of Strasbourg and Mainz). The opera, which is sung in German, uses two different singers for the principal role and the Epilogue is conceived as a kind of solo cantata. Here the benign older Gutenberg, sung by the Wagnerian bass-baritone Hans-Otto Weiss, with the younger Gutenberg alongside him, muses on his achievement and asks, now that the print era he inaugurated is over, to be left in peace. He is accompanied by 21 solo strings and off-stage low brass (solo horn, four Wagner tubas, two tenor trombones, bass trombone, tuba). This is a studio recording, performed on the stage of the Staats Theater Mainz in October 2002, and was made shortly after the successful run of 11 performances earlier that year. Personnel: Anja-Nina Bahrmann (soprano), Maarten Engeltjes (alto), Netherlands Radio Choir, Gils Leenaars (director), Netherlands Chamber Philharmonic, Brad Lubman (conductor), Track 13: Hans-Otto Weiss (bass baritone), Elmer Andree (baritone), Staats Philharmonie Mainz, Gernot Sahler (conductor) Tracks: The War in Heaven 1. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Gavin Bryars Ensemble

Gavin Bryars: The Sinking of the Titanic (Recorded live on 2012 centenary tour)

BCGBCD21 5052442004905 CD GB RECORDS £7.99 CLASSICAL This live version of Gavin Bryars’ seminal work The Sinking of the Titanic is regarded by the composer as “the definitive performance”, made with his ideal choice of musicians. It was recorded on the Gavin Bryars Ensemble’s tour in 2012, the centenary year of the disaster. It brings together in one performance elements that have appeared separately in the various versions that precede it: the inclusion of the improvising turntablist Philip Jeck; the presence of a second quartet of low strings that consists of his four children; the faint allusion to Aphex Twin’s remix The Raising of the Titanic made shortly after the release of the 1994 recording; the water gong first used by percussionist Martin Allen towards the end of a performance on a raft at the shallow end of a renovated Art Nouveau swimming pool in Brussels... Although there have been four previous recordings of The Sinking of the Titanic (and the original recording on Brian Eno’s Obscure label from 1975 is scheduled for re-release on GB Records), according to the composer this performance and recording is as near to a definitive one as there is ever likely to be. “One of the classics of British experimental music.” - The Guardian Personnel: Philip Jeck (improvising turntablist), Quartet I: Nick Barr, Morgan Goff (viola), Nick Cooper (cello), Gavin Bryars (double bass), Quartet II: Alexandra Maria Tchernakova (viola), Orlanda Bryars (cello), Ziella Bryars (cello), Yuri Bryars (double bass), Roger Heaton (bass clarinet), Dave Smith (tenor horn, keyboard, woodblocks), James Woodrow (electric guitar), Martin Allen (percussion) Tracks: 1. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Andreas Haefliger

Perspectives 6 - Beethoven, Berio, Schumann

AV2293 822252229325 CD AVIE £8.49 CLASSICAL Andreas Haefliger continues his captivating and thought-provoking Perspectives series with the sixth volume, juxtaposing Beethoven's Piano Sonatas Nos. 10 and 30, with seldom-heard miniatures by Berio, and Schumann’s great Fantasy in C. On ‘Perspectives 6’ Andreas Haefliger juxtaposes the Piano Sonatas of Beethoven with other composers, casting an enlightening glow on the works which one would not detect if played in isolation. Themes of humanity, nature and love run through a programme emphatically to be listened to rather than analysed intellectually. Haefliger opens with Beethoven’s early Piano Sonata No. 10, Op. 14, then segues into two of Berio’s seldom heard encores, Erdenklavier and Wasserklavier. He emerges to perform Beethoven’s late Piano Sonata No. 30, Op. 109, followed by two more miniatures by Berio, Luftklavier and Feuerklavier. The album culminates with Schumann’s Fantasy in C major. Critical acclaim for Andreas Haefliger: “Haefliger delivers an interpretation [of Brahms’ Sonata No. 2] of formidable granitic strength that nonetheless manages to encapsulate the work’s more introspective and poetic aspects.” - BBC Music Magazine, Disc of the Month (on Perspectives 4, AV2173) “Solid virtuosity and serious, thoughtful musicianship...a happy fusion of drama, cumulative sweep and textural clarity.” - Gramophone (on Perspectives 3, AV2148) Tracks: Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 10, Op. 14 1. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Goeyvaerts String Trio

Arvo Pärt: Stabat Mater, Ivan Moody: Simeron

CC72616 608917261622 CD CHALLENGE CLASSICS £8.49 CLASSICAL The Goeyvaerts String Trio was founded in 1997 and focuses exclusively on 20th and 21st century repertoire. On this CD the group performs pieces by contemporary composers Arvo Pärt and Ivan Moody. Both works featured here, Pärt’s Stabat Mater and Moody’s Simeron are musical evocations of religious icons. The vocalists on this recording are the soprano Zsuzsi Tóth, the countertenor Barnabás Hegyi, and tenor Olivier Berten. Arvo Pärt and Ivan Moody have both turned to Orthodox Christianity at some point in their lives and this has permeated the work of both of them in a particular way. Pärt’s relationship with the religious icon is well-known, however Moody’s piece Simeron also makes reference to an icon which, as with Pärt’s Stabat Mater, is meant to represent the transcendent truth. Although equal temperament is the most commonly known and used, for Arvo Pärt’s Stabat Mater the Goeyvaerts String Trio employs “Pure (Just) Intonation”, an early form of tuning where intervals are distributed unevenly but ‘purely’ across the octave. This lends the work a serene but deeply melancholy feel, while the composer creates tension by alternating simple triads with dissonances. Ivan Moody was born in London in 1964, and studied composition with Brian Dennis at London University, with William Brooks at York University and privately with John Tavener. He also studied Orthodox theology at the University of Joensuu, Finland. Moody's compositions show the influences of Eastern liturgical chant and the Orthodox Church, of which he is a member and priest (of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople). His Canticum Canticorum I, which was written for the Hilliard Ensemble and premiered in 1987, achieved enormous success and remains his most frequently-performed work. Since 1987, when the The Goeyvaerts String Trio was formed, it has collaborated with several major contemporary composers including Giya Kancheli and Peter Swinnen. It has already released two recordings for Challenge Classics, a disc devoted to music of the Second Viennese School (CC72375), and “String Trios from the East” which featured music by Gubaidalina, Kanchelli, Knaifel, and Paiberdin (CC72503). Personnel: Kristien Roels (violin), Kris Matthynssens (viola), Pieter Stas (cello), Zsuzsi Tóth (soprano), Barnabás Hegyi (countertenor), Olivier Berten (tenor) Tracks: 1. Arvo Pärt: Stabat Mater 2. Ivan Moody: Simeron

CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

NDR Choir & Philipp Ahmann

A Quattro Cori - Music for 16 Voices by Fasch, Benevoli & Mendelssohn

ES2049 4015372820497 CD ES-DUR £8.49 CLASSICAL In 1783, musician and writer Johann Friedrich Reichardt visited what he regarded as “the cradle of ornate music”, Italy. The far-reaching consequences of this trip on the development of German choral music are demonstrated by the NDR Choir in a recording of three impressive 16-voice works for four choirs: Missa a 16 voci in quattro cori by Carl Friedrich Fasch, Mendelssohn’s Hora est , and Missa “In diluvio aquarum multarum” by the Roman Baroque composer Orazio Benevoli (1605-1672) – a world premiere recording. Reichardt (1752-1814) returned from Italy with Benevoli’s epic vocal work and showed it to his colleague and predecessor as Prussian Hofkapellmeister, Carl Friedrich Fasch (1736-1800). The older man was filled with inspiration by the piece, composing his Missa a 16 voci in quattro cori. None of the existing Berlin (boys’) choirs could handle the work, so Fasch created his own ensemble, in which the soprano and alto parts were sung by women. Since 1793 it has been known as the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin. It took several more years before the Sing-Akademie was able to perform Fasch and Benevoli’s polychoral masses. In 1820, the then 11-year-old Felix Mendelssohn entered the Academy, where these works had become the choir's showpieces. In 1828, Felix took them as an incentive to compose his 16-voice Hora est, a motet which he presented to his sister Fanny on her 23th birthday. Performed by the Sing-Akademie - the choir by then comprised some 350 singers - it earned the highest praise for both composer and ensemble. The NDR Choir under Philip Ahmann presents this particularly demanding repertoire, showcasing many soloists from within its own ranks. Following the Venice CD released in 2012, this is the NDR choir’s second recording with Ahmann on the ES-DUR label. Personnel: NDR Choir, Philipp Ahmann (conductor), Christoph Harer (cello), Barbara Messmer (violin), Dennis Gotte (theorbo), Klaus Eichhorn, Jörg Jacobi (organ) Tracks: Carl Friedrich Christian Fasch: Missa a 16 voci in quattro cori 1. Kyrie a 16 2. Christe eleison 3. Kyrie a 16 4. Gloria a tre soprani soli 5. Et in terra pax 6. Laudamus. Soprano concertato 7. Gratias. Tenore concertato 8. Domine Deus 9. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Eleonore Buhler-Kestler

J.S. Bach: Toccatas BWV 910 - 912, Fantasia and Fugue in A minor BWV 904

CHA3042 4015372830427 CD CHARADE £5.55 CLASSICAL Following her previous album of the Bach Toccatas BWV 913-916 (CHA3041), harpsichordist Eleonore Bühler-Kestler now turns her attention to the remaining three Toccatas for keyboard instruments: BWV 910-912. As a young composer, Bach demonstrated in these pieces unusual ideas and a playful exuberance, and their colourfulness particularly attracts Bühler-Kestler. She combines them here with the Fantasia and Fugue in A minor, BWV 904, another of Bach’s early works. The three Toccatas BWV 910-912 prove themselves to be youthful strokes of genius in which Bach, taking up the North German “stylus fantasticus”, pulled out all the artistic stops. Bach’s appreciation for his own toccatas is evident from the fact that several copies were disseminated during his lifetime. The virtuoso attack, embellished with improvisational gestures, also makes reference to the Bach of the harpsichord, who was regarded by his contemporaries as one of the greatest keyboard players of his time. Germany’s most significant contemporary artist Gerhard Richter also loves Bach and Eleanor Bühler-Kestler’s recordings. Richter has provided the cover image for this Bach disc, as he has done for the other Bühler-Kestler CDs produced by Charade. The two artists have been in correspondence for many years, and Richter has also guaranteed cover images for future CDs. Especially in her later years, Bühler-Kestler has worked tirelessly on “her” Bach, loving its complexity and the music’s inner warmth, which has acted as a strong source of support throughout her life. Today she lives in Bayreuth, where until 2009 she was a lecturer in music at the university. Personnel: Eleonore Bühler-Kestler (harpsichord) Tracks: Toccata in F sharp minor, BWV 910 1. Toccata 2. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 14/4/2014

Penderecki String Quartet

Beethoven: String Quartets No. 15 in A minor, Op. 132 & No. 16 in F major, Op. 135

MAR81449 774718144928 CD MARQUIS £7.95 CLASSICAL This disc features Beethoven’s last two string quartets, No. 15 in A minor, opus 132, and No. 16 in F, opus 135. They are performed here by the award-winning Polish/North American ensemble, the Penderecki String Quartet. Formed in 1986, the Penderecki String Quartet began their career as winners of the Penderecki Prize at the National Chamber Music Competition in Łódz, Poland. The group is presently based in Waterloo, Ontario where they have been Quartet-in-Residence at Wilfrid Laurier University since 1991. The group champions music of our time, performing a wide range of repertoire from Haydn to Frank Zappa and has premiered over 100 new works to date. During a period of over 25 years it has recorded over 30 albums, and been described by Fanfare Magazine as “an ensemble of formidable power and keen musical sensitivity”. The music on this disc represents some of Beethoven's final utterances on the string quartet. Op. 132 traverses a spiritual development from near despair to a triumphant finale. In the middle is perhaps the greatest of all of Beethoven's adagios, the "holy song of thanksgiving”. A march then leads to a finale, culminating in a triumphant coda. Op. 135, written very near the end of his life, is another matter. Two of its four movements seem hardly serious at all - the first quite jocular, the second (scherzo) even lighter in mood. But the third is indeed altogether sublime - sweet, thoughtful, poignant to the last possible degree. The finale opens with a question, indicated by Beethoven himself: "Must it be?" - and answers “It Must Be!” Coming from a man as near death as Beethoven then was, that is an amazing testament to his indomitable spirit, and remains so to this day. Personnel: Jeremy Bell (violin), Jerzy Kaplanek (violin), Christine Vlajk (viola), Jacob Braun (cello) Tracks: String Quartet No. 15 in A minor, Opus 132 1. I. Allegro 2. II. Allegro ma non tanto 3. During this time he prepared numerous copies of Buxtehude‘s works and studied them meticulously.
